Newly Elected Prelate His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Celebrates Divine Liturgy At St. Sarkis Church

The newly elected Prelate, His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian visited St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church on Sunday, September 22, 2018 where he celebrated the Divine Liturgy and presided over church services.

The sanctuary was filled with parishioners who came to welcome the new prelate's first visit to our community. Fr. Nareg Terterian, pastor of St. Sarkis Church addressed the prelate and said: "Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord, Serpazan hayr , welcome home".

In his sermon, Anoushavan Serpazan spoke about the important role that the parish of St. Sarkis Church has played in his life, where he served as the pastor for over 15 years. He commended the pastor, board of trustee members, auxiliary bodies and faithful parishioners for their continuous efforts to make St. Sarkis church an important Armenian-Christian spiritual center. Serpazan also presided over the service of blessing of flags and prayers for the Republic of Armenian on the 27 th anniversary of the independence.

Following church services, His Grace Bishop Anoushavan joined the annual picnic and spent the afternoon with our community members.

The parish of St. Sarkis Church rejoiced welcoming the new Prelate. We pray that may God almighty strengthen and bless Anoushavan serpazan in his service to God and the Armenian Church.
Hrashapar Service Welcomes New Prelate of Eastern Prelacy
NEW YORK, NY-A Hrashapar Service of thanksgiving took place on Saturday, September 22, at St. Illuminator's Cathedral in New York City in honor of His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian on the occasion of his installation as Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America. The Cathedral was filled to capacity as the faithful from the tri-state and mid-atlantic areas came together to welcome the new prelate.

During the service the retiring Prelate, His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, passed the Prelate's "staff of authority" to the recently elected Prelate, and on this occasion delivered his heartfelt message to His Grace and to the assembled congregation.

After Archbishop Oshagan's address, His Grace Bishop Anoushavan delivered his first message as Prelate. The full messages given by both the former and current prelates are given below.

After the conclusion of the Hrashapar service, a reception took place in the Cathedral's John Pashalian Hall as the faithful gathered to congratulate the new prelate.
St. Sarkis Church Annual Picnic by Nayda Voskerijian

On Sunday, September 23rd, the St. Sarkis picnic committee was gearing up for it's annual picnic. Despite the uncertainty of the weather, the picnic proved to be the most successful one yet! By 1:00 pm the church grounds were transformed into a carnival like atmosphere. At the bottom of the hill the kids  zone was set up, with a bouncy house, an obstacle course, and various other children's activities.

The food station was set up to serve the delicious Armenian barbeque, along with the cold, delectable appetizers. Soft drinks, beer and wine, were also set up near the food station. Lastly the cafè set up in Pagoumian hall was most pleasing to the eyes, with a variety of homemade Armenian desserts and delicacies.

At the start of the picnic, Der. Nareg blessed the food, after which he invited our special guest, the newly elected prelate to the eastern Prelacy , His Eminence Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian to convey his message.

Michael Gostanian's Ensemble entertained the attendees with beautiful Armenian popular songs, along with special guest Hooshere. Additional entertainment was provided by master Violinist Arsen Ketikyan and young rapper Tonee Marino.

Mother Nature was kind to us, as it did not begin to rain till we finished the Raffle drawing. We look forward to seeing everyone next year!

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE
GALATIANS (6:14-18)

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God.
Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (24:30-36)

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
SAINT GEORGE (KEVORK) THE COMMANDER
This Saturday, September 29, the Armenian Church commemorates St. George (Kevork) the Commander, a third century Roman general who challenged the Emperor's persecution of Christians by publicly tearing up the Emperor's decree, and urging others to follow his example. To this day he remains a popular saint in the Armenian Church and is the patron saint of soldiers and scouts. As in many other instances, the Armenians have given St. George an Armenian national character. The Feast of St. George is always on the Saturday before the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak that is preceded by a week of fasting (Monday to Friday). Although the fast is not connected to St. George, through the centuries it has been popularly identified as the Fast of St. George.

FEAST OF THE HOLY CROSS OF VARAK
This Sunday, September 30, is the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak, a holiday that is unique to the Armenian Church and is celebrated two weeks after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. After coming to Armenia, the Hripsimiantz Virgins lived near Mount Varak. They had brought with them a fragment of the True Cross. Fleeing persecution, they sought refuge on the mountain where Hripsime hid the cross among the rocks before fleeing to Vagharshapat. In 653, a hermit named Todik found the hidden cross by following a brilliant light that illuminated the mountain and guided him inside the church to the altar where he found the cross. The light shone for twelve days. In memory of this event, Catholicos Nerses (the Builder) established the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak. He wrote the beautiful hymn, "By the Sign of Your All Powerful Holy Cross," (Nshanav Amenahaght Khatchit).
The Monastery of St. Nishan (Varakavank) was built on Mount Varak, which is in the southeastern region of Van. It was home to one of the greatest libraries and museums, filled with ancient and modern books and works of art. The Monastery became even more prominent when Khrimian Hayrik established a publishing house and a school there hoping to make the monastery an educational center. He founded the first newspaper to be published in historic Armenia, Artsiv Vaspurakani (The Eagle of Vaspurakan). The massacres and deportations of 1915 destroyed Hayrik's hopes and plans, as well as so much more. Varakavank was destroyed by the Turkish army on April 30, 1915, during the siege of Van.
By the sign of your all-victorious cross, O Christ, lover of mankind, keep us from the unseen enemy, for you alone are the King of Glory, blessed forever. On it you stretched out your spotless hands and shed your blood for the salvation of the universe for you alone are King of Glory, blessed forever. At your second coming when this holy sign shall appear once again make your servants worthy of renewal for you alone are the King of Glory, blessed forever.
May your cross be our refuge by its flame-like radiance; it is named the tree of life; you crushed the enemy and unloosed the sentence of death for the salvation of the universe. Sending up praises the heavens rejoice and the earth rejoices at the discovery of the holy cross like the four-winged rock which enlightened this world by its sun-like rays. Jerusalem rejoiced, believers were glad; they adorned themselves in marvelous garment for they saw the victorious sign; all creation was adorned with its light.

Monday, October 1, St. David of Tvin.
