December 6th, 2020
Dear Sea Kings,

Please see below for updates on everything happening at PVHS. We encourage everyone to continue to check our Distance Learning webpage for additional updates and information as well. On our school webpage you will also find quick links for technology help, scheduling a meeting with your counselor, and reporting an issue anonymously. Check the right hand side of the main webpage for access to all three links.

Sincerely,

Allan Tyner, Ed. D

Student Spotlight

The Coca-Cola 2021 Semifinalists have been announced and out of the 1609 seniors selected from 99,403 applications throughout the country….there were 4 Sea Kings on the list!!!

Dara Chidi, Spencer Levin, Abbie Maemoto, and Alice Min were all chosen for this honor and they move on to try for the 250 spots in the next round. PVHS was the only school in California to have 4 from the same school get on the semifinalist list (and the only ones from the Peninsula this year).

The scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship for students who are “recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities.” Our Sea Kings are doing great things!
AP Psychology Highlight

Each year our AP Psychology students participate in a unit to learn about the development of children. Part of this unit has our students carry around a "Flour" baby to class to better understand the responsibilities of parents. Despite being in distance learning, our students and their flour babies were present and excited to take part in learning.
Mock Trial Spotlight

Mock Trial finished their competition for the year and our teams were very successful. At the 43rd Annual Los Angeles County competition, over 70 high schools from LA County competed in a full trial simulation hosted by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. Two members of the Palos Verdes High School team won awards for excellence which is truly outstanding as only a few PVHS Mock Trial competitors have ever won awards over the last ten years.  Congratulations to students Grant Walther for Best Defense Attorney and Thomas Lercari for Best Defense Witness. And a special thank you is well deserved for our long-serving attorney parent-coaches, Troy Slome and Mike Baumann.

As a South Bay Families Connected partner school district, our teens have access to the new SBFC Virtual Teen Center. This was created by local teens from the South Bay community who understand the challenges that teens are facing during these current times. These teens have produced videos and curated resources to help support teens mental health and wellness. It is their goal to help others with practicing self-care and kindness, encourage teens to connect with their passions and remind the teen community they are not alone during these challenging times. Check out the resources at the link below.
