Habitat is Critical for Struggling Monarch Butterflies

Upwards of 90 percent of the Monarch Butterly's historic population has been lost.
|
Missouri is located in the heart of the annual monarch butterfly migration, making our state a key geography to monarch restoration efforts. A lot of the population is found along the I-35 corridor, but don't think of that as a narrow window because it's actually around 400 miles wide. Monarchs must find milkweed and nectar sources in the corridor to survive. These days they're having a much harder time doing so.
Monarchs begin appearing across Missouri towards the end of April. They show up in southern Missouri first and work their way north. If you see a monarch in the spring, it's heading north. Starting in August and though much of September, we'll start seeing monarchs again heading south to Mexico.

Ken and Elizabeth Babcock Conservation Easement

Greenbelt Land Trust of Mid-Missouri is working hard to make sure that, even with all the new people arriving on a daily basis, the vital natural and agricultural lands that make this a wonderful place to live are protected, like Big Sky Nature Preserve and the Ken and Elizabeth Babcock Conservation Easement, pictured here.
We accomplish this by offering private landowners the tools they need to protect their land from development. Our conservation programs are voluntary, economical, and permanent; we can help you make sure that development will never push you off of the family farm, without taking ownership or opening up your land to public access. We are a statewide leader in private land conservation, collaborating with local and state government agencies, other nonprofits, and national organizations to provide the highest quality of conservation to our entire state.
We also regularly host events celebrating our natural and agricultural heritage, giving our friends and neighbors the opportunity to become more closely connected with the Mid-Missouri landscape. We host hikes, provide continuing education to professionals, and throw our annual Deep Roots Dinner every fall (this year, it will be on October 21
st
, with great, local food and authentic Ozark music from the Creek Rocks out of Springfield).
