CNN Heroes Features Harmon Parker and Kakenya Ntaiya

Like many rivers in Africa, hundreds of thousands of people in eastern Africa have been affected by heavy rains and devastating floods in the recent years. The waterway that runs through Kakenya Ntaiya's native village swells dramatically in the rainy season -- keeping children from school, workers from their jobs and putting lives at risk. Kakenya, honored as a Top 10 CNN Hero in 2013 for educating girls, wanted to find a solution. So, when she met Harmon Parker, recognized as a Top 10 CNN Hero in 2010 for building footbridges in remote areas, she asked for his help.
In May 2017, Kakenya's Crossing was completed and opened for the local community before the rainy season.  It has been a year since construction!  We estimate that Kakenya's Crossing provides 72,800 safe crossings per year.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to CNN, everyone that supported the 2016 "B E A BRIDGE"   Fundraiser for enabling this bridge,   to our proud partners at Initiative 360 and WSP Canada for providing matching funds, and the many individuals who donated. The construction of Kakenya's Crossing represents a significant milestone for Bridging the Gap Africa!
