Rita Schiano Join us as Resilience Strategist Rita Schiano offers an educating and entertaining exploration of the choices that determine our direction, and the decisions that ultimately dictate our destiny.

The way stress impacts us does not necessarily have to be negative. We have a capacity for resilience, behaviors, thoughts, skills, and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone.

Rita discusses ways to manage stress through resilience, the characteristics of resilient people, as well as personal resiliency skills and attitudes, and how to strengthen them.

About Our Guest Speaker:
Ask Rita Schiano what she does, and she'll answer, "It depends on the day of the week."

On Monday through Friday, you may find her presenting resilience-based programs on managing stress or leadership development.

Or you may find her giving a keynote or workshop on Changing Your Habitudes, Managing Stress, Resilience, or The Healing Power of Forgiveness.

NSA Member Or she might be presenting a book discussion on one of her novels.

Or she might be meeting with one of her coaching clients, helping them focus on their most important goals, interests, challenges, and needs.

And if it is a Saturday, you'll most likely find Rita at Bay Path University's Central Mass Campus where she is an adjunct professor teaching Philosophy and Women Empowered As Learners and Leaders courses.

Yes, for this resilience strategist and coach, inspirational speaker, author, and professor, it truly does depend on the day of the week.

Country Bank Donates $15,000 to the Domestic Violence Task Force

Country Bank Donation Country Bank announced that it recently donated $15,000 to the Ware River Valley Domestic Violence Task Force to assist them in their continued commitment to helping those in need in the Quaboag Hills Region.

" Country Bank's donation has been the foundation of all local domestic violence services at Valley Human Services of BHN, Inc. in the Quaboag Hills. Their funds have been the seed money and remain the match for programs now supported by municipal, state and federal dollars. We literally would not have our team preventing and responding to domestic violence in our region without Country Bank," states Jac Patrissi, Director of Domestic Violence Services at Valley Human Services.

The bank's continued support of this program stems from their belief that when their local communities have the necessary services and support to assist those in need, everyone has the opportunity to improve their quality of life. "Having the right resources is critical in rural locations where transportation can also impact the availability of assistance. We know that Jac and her team help with all the necessary means to help those who reach out for support and guidance which may also include transportation if needed, their work changes lives for the better and we are proud to support their program funding needs," stated Shelley Regin, Senior Vice President, Marketing at Country Bank and Advisory Board Member of BHN, Valley Human Services.

To learn more about how they might be able to assist you, please visit: bhninc.org/domestic-violence/

  North Brookfield Savings Bank Continues
Feed a Camper at Camp Putnam Fundraiser
Help NBSB Feed a Camper
North Brookfield Savings Bank is thrilled to announce that the Feed a Camper at Camp Putnam fundraiser will return once again during May and June of 2018. The Bank is encouraging their communities to join forces with them to help feed local campers this summer. Nestled in the fields and forests of New Braintree, Camp Putnam provides an authentic, nature-based camping experience for children and is made affordable for all families regardless of income.

Since North Brookfield Savings Bank consistently places a high importance on public service and bettering local communities, the Bank has kick started this fundraiser with a $1,000 donation. NBSB also believes that together as a community we are stronger and can accomplish even more. With a total fundraising goal of $1,500, NBSB is welcoming community members, customers and Bank employees to help raise the remaining $500 during May and June at any branch location.

"It is amazing to see some campers during their first few meals at camp as they realize that there is 'plenty' of food. Usually around the second or third day, the overall pace slows down and kids begin to realize that they don't need to rush, don't need to save food for later and that there will be plenty of food at this meal and every other." said Todd Stewart, Executive Camp Director.

Camp Putnam, which spends
nearly $40,000 on food per summer, proudly serves campers tasty yet healthy home-cooked and "kid-friendly" meals such as homemade mac and cheese, tacos, Shepherd's pie, fresh fruits and veggies, pancakes, French toast and more, in a family-style atmosphere.

Stewart continued, "Although it is heartbreaking to realize just how many children come from situations where securing their next meal is a concern, it is a wonderful experience to see over 100 kids, from a wide-range of backgrounds, happily enjoying a delicious meal as one large family before, during, or after a great day experiencing nature in the carefree way all children should be afforded. This is why donations from organizations like North Brookfield Savings Bank and our generous communities are vital and so appreciated."

Want to know how you can donate? Anyone can make their donation into the designated collection jars displayed along the teller line at any North Brookfield Savings Bank branch location, with branches located in North Brookfield, East Brookfield, West Brookfield, Ware, Belchertown, Palmer and Three Rivers. In addition, employees of the Bank will each donate $5 in order to participate in designated Jean Days throughout April, May and June.
"North Brookfield Savings Bank is proud to partner with and support organizations like Camp Putnam, whose efforts help aid in the health and happiness of our young, local community members." said Donna Boulanger, North Brookfield Savings Bank President and CEO. "Camp Putnam provides a safe, nurturing, healthy and fun environment for campers to make friends and experience personal growth. We are hopeful that with our contribution and the benevolent generosity of our community members we will once again reach and exceed our goal to help feed campers well-rounded, nutritious meals."

Harrington Celebrates Nurse and Hospital Week

Nurses Week SOUTHBRIDGE, MA, May 4, 2018 - Harrington HealthCare System is proud to support the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Hospital Association (AHA) by participating in the national recognition of Hospital and Nurses Week for 2018.

Celebrated May 6-12 across the country, the observances are a tribute to local healthcare workers and those who tirelessly put patient care first each and every day.

Founded by ANA, National Nurses Week is observed each year in alignment with the birthday of Florence Nightingale. The week recognizes the significant contributions nurses make to improve the health of the nation. This year's theme for Nurses Week is "Nurses: Inspire, Innovate, Influence".

Hospital Week, as founded by the AHA, celebrates hospitals, health systems and the women and men who support the health and well-being of their communities through dedication and care from the heart.

"This week we're celebrating our entire Harrington staff, as each individual makes up an incredible team that puts patient care, the safety of our community and the health of our friends and family at the forefront of every day," said Ed Moore, President and CEO. "We have an outstanding team - from our Emergency Department Nurses to our Environmental Services staff. We recognize the key role each individual plays in providing compassionate, quality care.

Harrington employs more than 1,500 people who work at over two dozen office and campus locations across south central MA, as well as their newest outpatient behavioral health office in Putnam, CT. The system is made up of Harrington Hospital-based employees and Harrington Physician Services.

Celebrations continued all week long with employee raffles, free coffee and special refreshments in the cafeteria.
Help Southbridge Blossom
Donate to the Southbridge Planting Fund

Southbridge Planting Fund Isn't it wonderful? Spring has arrived at last, and every day we can see the landscape coming alive. And so welcome after the winter and early spring we had!

Here in Southbridge, volunteers are busily preparing to fill the urns, planters and hangers of the downtown area with flowers for the spring and summer. This natural, colorful display has become a much appreciated tradition, and as we begin our 16th year, the volunteers are more enthusiastic than ever.  The annual tradition is a source of pride to residents, and is much appreciated by those visiting or passing through the Town.

Please consider helping us to continue this tradition by contributing to this worthy effort.  In fact, we cannot keep Southbridge flowering without your help!  In addition to the cost of the flowers, we must purchase fertilizer, moisture pellets, and potting mix. Volunteers undertake the maintenance of the various planters, urns, and hangers themselves, but there are expenses associated with that as well.

We greatly appreciate the contributions of those who have supported us along the way and could not have maintained this effort without you.

If you would like more information, please contact Steve Brady, Chairman of the Physical Improvements Subcommittee of the Southbridge Business Partnership at 508-765-9827.

Checks should be payable to the Southbridge Business Partnership with "planting fund" written in the memo portion of your check and mailed to:

The Last Green Valley Announces First Funding Phase of $12.2 Million Project to Protect the Southern New England Heritage Forest

The Last Green Valley, Inc. and its project partners have launched phase one of a $12.2 million program to help landowners in the Southern New England Heritage Forest conserve their land while improving vital habitat for important bird species.

The program is an unprecedented three-state effort made possible through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Joining NRCS and The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV) as lead partners are the Mass Conn Sustainable Forest Partnership/Opacum Land Trust and the Northern Rhode Island Conservation District.

This program will provide technical and financial assistance to forest landowners with property within the Southern New England Heritage Forest (SNEHF), who wish to conserve their land by granting an easement to NRCS through the Healthy Forests Reserve Program (HFRP). The HFRP is a voluntary conservation easement program for private woodland owners that is new to the region. The deadline for first-round applications is July 20, 2018.

Preserving the Southern New England Heritage Forest is critical for important bird species and other wildlife. With 1.49 million-acres of unfragmented forest corridor stretching along the Connecticut and Rhode Island border to the Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts, the Southern New England Heritage Forest is still an astonishing 76 percent forest cover and one of the last viable wildlife corridors from northern New England to the coast in southern New England.

The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor accounts for almost half of the Southern New England Heritage Forest. As the last green oasis in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington D.C., the program is vital to ensuring the national heritage corridor and the larger Southern New England Heritage Forest continue supporting threatened bird species and other important wildlife and plant species.

NRCS will pay the landowner 75 percent of the fair market value of the enrolled land to promote the recovery of endangered and threatened bird species and improve plant and animal biodiversity. NRCS will also pay for all transaction costs, including a title search, boundary survey, hazardous materials search and appraisal. NRCS will draft a restoration plan for the property that focuses on improving habitat for a specific bird species and will provide 75 percent or more of the funds for the first round of any restoration work that is required.

The funds provided in phase one are a portion of the larger $12.2 million program. NRCS is providing a $6.1 million grant which is being matched by $6.1 of significant contributions from the project's numerous partners, including the three lead partner organizations and 16 additional organizations.

While the application deadline for the first round of this competitive program is July 20, 2018, we advise potential applicants to contact the lead partner in their state as soon as possible. There are preliminary steps that must be completed, and the partners are available to provide technical assistance:

For Connecticut Projects - Bill Reid, 860 774-3300; bill@tlgv.org
For Massachusetts Projects - Ed Hood, 508-347-9144 (leave a voice mail with your contact info); ehood@opacumlt.org
For Rhode Island Projects - Kate Sayles, 401-934-0840; ksayles.nricd@gmail.com

Application materials are available on The Last Green Valley's website, www.thelastgreenvalley.org

Supporting partners for this project include: MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, Providence Water, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Hull Forest Products, Thames River Basin Partnership, New England Forestry Foundation, Eastern CT Conservation District, Norcross Wildlife Foundation, RI Division of Forest Management, RI Woodland Partnership, Harvard Forest, Yale Sustaining Family Forests Institute, Audubon Connecticut, Mass Audubon and Audubon RI.

Hometown Bank Community Foundation Contributes $10,000
to Worcester Community Housing Resources

Michael D. Hewitt, President of Hometown Bank Community Foundation, Inc., announced today that a contribution in the amount of $10,000 was presented to Worcester Community Housing Resources ("WCHR") on Tuesday, April 24th, 2018.

WCHR is a not-for-profit organization providing services to low-income residents and communities throughout Worcester County.  Their initiatives assist low-income, underserved populations by providing high quality, affordable housing options that meet the resident's specific needs.  Whether it's home ownership, family apartments, elderly assisted-living or single furnished rooms, WCHR develops, owns and operates them.

In addition, WCHR works as a Community Development Financial Institution, where their Community Loan Fund provides financing for homeowners who are not eligible for a loan through other financial institutions.  The organization also works with private and public partners to develop home ownership and rental housing in key neighborhood locations.

The funds provided by Hometown Bank Community Foundation will be used for direct service costs to acquire and renovate an eleven-bedroom home that will house a program for teen mothers and their children.  The funds will also help with the development of the property, which will include office space for the 24-hour staff, common kitchen and living areas, parking and outdoor green space for the children to play.

Michael Hewitt said "The WCHR is providing a valuable service to those in need, and we are very happy to make a supporting contribution.  As a community bank we strive to support the communities we serve."

Hometown Bank Community Foundation, Inc. was formed in early 2016 by bankHometown, a state-chartered cooperative bank headquartered in Oxford, Massachusetts with $750 million in assets.

This is the first play adaptation of the classic novel and cult film. It premiered in April 2000 at the Gielgud Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, starring Kathleen Turner as Mrs Robinson.  Set in California in the 1960's, Benjamin's got excellent grades, very proud parents and, ever since he helped Mrs. Robinson with her zipper, a fine future behind him... A cult novel, a classic film, a quintessential hit of the 60s, now Benjamin's disastrous sexual odyssey is brought vividly to life in this stage production.

Brimfield's  8th Annual Town Wide Tag Sale
Brimfield Tag Sale
A sale on North Main Street captured the attention of shoppers at 2016's Town Wide Tag Sale!

By Diana Caissie

On the heels of the famous Brimfield Antiques Show, Brimfield residents are preparing for the Brimfield Town Wide Tag Sale on Saturday, May 19th - rain or shine!

The Town Wide Tag Sale started in 2011 as a fundraiser for Hitchcock Academy and is now in its eighth year. Realtor Stephanie Bayliss of MA Homes LLC is generously donating her time and expertise to help Hitchcock Academy make this tag sale possible. Beside the hard work of Stephanie and the staff at Hitchcock, the Tag Sale couldn't work without participation of the community - both those who register to host tag sales and those who visit and shop.

Brimfield residents interested in hosting a tag sale have until Monday, May 14th to register their tag sale with Hitchcock Academy. The First Congregational Church of Brimfield and St. Christopher's Catholic Church will both have space available for those who live outside of Brimfield or who wish to sell in the center of town. Please contact them prior to Saturday, May 19th.

Visitors to the tag sales will be happy to hear that maps will be free this year! Starting on Friday, May 18th people can visit MaHomesLLC.com to get a copy of the map or on Saturday, May 19th, pick up a map at Hitchcock Academy starting at 8 AM. The next step is to visit tag sales until the shopping is done!

Cedar Street Grille Global Tapas Dinners
Avellino
Farm to Table, Monday, May 21, 2018, 6:30pm

This month's Global Tapas Dinner takes us right to our own back yard. As winter fades and spring brings re-birth to our spirit and the earth, Cedar Street Grille's Head Chef Nick Faucher and his culinary team are excited to create a multi-course farm-to-table dinner, highlighting ingredients with the distinctive flavors that only this special season can bring. Chef Nick will be using local farmers, wherever possible, for a true "farm-to-table" experience. You'll learn about some of the locally grown or raised treasures right in our own community.

Come along and experience Chef Nick's local culinary connections through Cedar-style small plates and find out why our global tapas dinners have such rave reviews. Make your reservations early because we expect this dinner to sell out quickly. Pricing for this dinner is $52.00* per person and includes a special regional cocktail, wine, or beer. The price does not include tax or gratuity. Please call the restaurant directly at 508-347-5800 for reservations. Doors open at 5:30pm and dinner begins promptly at 6:30pm.
An Evening to Benefit Woman In Business Scholarship Fund
Dinner at 8
May 23, Sturbridge Host Hotel, 5:30-8:00pm

Over the last 27 years, Woman In Business, Inc. (WIB), a 501c(3) that supports women by fostering networking, sharing information and experiences, and providing educational opportunities, has given out over $40,000 in scholarships to over 100 young women for their continuing education!
This year we are asking for broader support from our community. WIB has teamed up with the Tantasqua High School Drama Club to host a Murder Mystery Dinner and Interactive Theatre Experience, "Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine," to help raise money for our scholarship program. It's
an experience you won't soon forget!

"In a banquet room, guests are expecting a dinner theatre show.  But when the guest of honor, Eleanor Van Heusen, falls face first into her plate of spaghetti, the guests are suddenly witnesses to a murder!  Luckily, Inspector Bungles is there to help solve this whodunit.  To say the least, Eleanor wasn't loved by all.  In fact, all her family members and even the chef have reasons to kill her.  Hilarity ensues as they each reveal their own murder plans, yet all claim innocence. "

$30 per person
. Evening includes Dinner, Performance, Sweet Treats Dessert Buffet and Penny Auction. All proceeds to benefit WIB's Scholarship Fund.

Fifth Annual Dinner Dance Fundraiser
Sturbridge Rotary Club

The Sturbridge Rotary Club is hosting a Dinner Dance on Friday, June 1 at the Cohasse Country Club in Southbridge from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.  Proceeds from the Dinner Dance will benefit the Saint John Paul II Food Pantry located in Southbridge, MA.

Established in 1991, the Food Pantry provides emergency food assistance to qualified residents of Southbridge and Sturbridge.  An average of 400 families are served every month.  That's over 70 tons of food distributed annually in these two communities.  While some food is supplied by the Worcester County Food Bank and by generous local grocery stores, the Food Pantry is dependent upon local financial contributions to continue serving those in need.

While this is the fifth year of hosting a Dinner Dance, Sturbridge Rotary has taken another step to further help the Food Pantry.  They have partnered with Southbridge Rotary and created the Community Food Collaborative (CFC) located in Sturbridge.  The CFC is a volunteer-based community garden growing fresh organic vegetables, all of which is being donated to the Food Pantry.

We invite you to join Sturbridge Rotary to demonstrate your commitment of helping to feed hungry people served by the Saint John Paul II Food Pantry.  Besides serving a buffet dinner, there will be dancing to the music of Sunshine Entertainment with DJ Chris Hookie. Raffle prizes will also be available.  How long has it been since you've danced, had a great meal, socialized, perhaps won a prize, and helped a great cause - all in one evening?  Tickets are $50 per person or purchase a table of 8 for $350 and bring your friends.  To purchase tickets, contact Austin Jenkins at 508-347-6511 or www.sturbridgerotary.org for information.  Checks should be made payable to the Sturbridge Rotary Club.

Come prepared with your dancing shoes for a fun night out and for such a worthwhile cause!
