Student Spotlight
In March, a group of 3rd-year medical students from the OSU Center for Health Sciences participated in a disaster simulation exercise held in Lawton, Oklahoma. The exercise simulated an aircraft emergency at the Lawton-Ft. Sill Regional Airport and included elements of the Lawton Fire Department, Lawton Police Department, and local EMS. The twelve students observed triage in the ER at Comanche County Memorial Hospital and participated in simulated patient care in surgery, PACU, and recovery.

Pet Therapy Dog Joins Rural Health Staff

The Center for Rural Health (CRH) is excited to welcome our first OSU Pete's Pet Posse therapy dog! Maggie, a two-year-old boxer mix rescued from the banks of the Arkansas River, belongs to CRH Coordinator of Rural Research and Grant Development, Dr. Krista Schumacher.

Maggie is a member of the third class of Pete's Pet Posse Tulsa (P3T) and received her AKC Canine Good Citizen and Alliance of Therapy Dogs certification in March. In addition to P3T, Maggie and Krista are also members of the Tulsa-based Karing K9s therapy dog group, which visits both urban and rural communities in the area. Because of Maggie's rural Oklahoma roots, she thinks her job of bringing smiles to Rural Medical Track students, CRH staff, and rural residents is a dream come true.

Maggie and her human partner, Krista Schumacher, were all smiles P3T graduation.
Resource Directory Aims to Help HRSA Grantees

The Oklahoma Office of Rural Health (OORH) is developing an electronic "Partner Resource Directory" (or PRD) for current and prospective Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grantees in Oklahoma. The PRD leverages the expertise of partners with the twin goals of increasing the number and competitiveness of HRSA grant applications from Oklahoma. Last summer, officials from the HRSA Region 6 office identified Oklahoma as having a low rate of HRSA grant submissions as compared to other states in the region and nation. The PRD will also help strengthen existing partnerships among HRSA grantees, create better coordination of healthcare resources, and improve the alignment of HRSA and state resources.

For more information about the PRD, please contact Pete Walton at the OORH. For your organization to be listed in the PRD, please complete this brief survey.
OSU TeleHealth Partners with Heartland Telehealth Resource Center

OSU TeleHealth is excited to announce its academic partnership with the Heartland Telehealth Resource Center (HTRC). As one of three academic partners, OSU TeleHealth serves as HTRC's Oklahoma liaison providing guidance and expertise in the development and expansion of telemedicine in the state. The University of Kansas and the University of Missouri house the other two academic partners.

Serving Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, HTRC is one of 12 federally designated regional telehealth resource centers established by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Office for the Advancement of Telehealth. While HTRC itself does not provide telehealth services, they offer a wide range of assistance to providers and organizations looking to establish or expand their telehealth offerings. HTRC  offers  many of its services free of charge.

Visit the  HTRC website for more information or contact Tim Davis, manager of OSU TeleHealth.
