Announcement: Sasakawa USA will launch
Japan's Energy Conundrum on June 25
On June 25, Sasakawa USA will launch Japan's Energy Conundrum, a book detailing the evolution of Japan's energy policy and practices since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Sasakawa USA Senior Fellow for Energy and Technology,
Dr. Phyllis Genther Yoshida
, served as the book's editor.
The launch event is currently at capacity for guests. A video and recap of the launch's panel discussion, which will feature several of the book's chapter authors, will be posted to the Sasakawa USA website after the event.

Analysis: Japan's Plutonium Question
Japan must reassess the appropriate supply-demand balance of its plutonium stocks upon completion of its new energy plan, writes Dr. Phyllis Genther Yoshida, Senior Fellow for Energy and Technology, in a new paper published on the Sasakawa USA website.
Japan has about 47 tons of separated plutonium onshore and stored in France and Great Britain for reprocessing into commercial fuel with a small amount reserved for research purposes. Read "Japan's Plutonium Question."

In the News: Admiral Dennis Blair speaks to media regarding Trump-Kim Summit
Admiral Dennis Blair, Chairman of Sasakawa USA, shared his thoughts on the recent Trump-Kim summit and its resultant agreement in a recent interview with the Financial Times. "Democrats accuse Trump of doing 'anaemic' deal with Kim" was published on June 12. Blair also discussed President Trump's vow to stop joint military exercises with South Korea on NPR's All Things Considered on June 15. Blair is a former Director of National Intelligence and previous Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Command.

In the News: Sasakawa USA Fellows publish articles in Kyodo News, The Diplomat
Tobias Harris, Fellow for Economy, Trade, and Business at Sasakawa USA, published "Between North Korea and Trade: Shinzo Abe's G7 2018 Dilemma," in The Diplomat on June 8. Harris sees Abe's public rhetoric--more specifically, the topics he chooses to avoid--as revelatory of the conflicting interests that the Prime Minister must weigh to both defend Japan's interests abroad and maintain his popularity at home.
