#CureStigma - a Great Slogan for
Mental Health Awareness Month!!!

In case you aren't aware, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has coined the slogan "CureStigma". As featured on their website, curing stigma is important because "one in five Americans are affected by mental health conditions. Stigma is toxic to their mental health because it creates an environment of shame, fear and silence that prevents many people from seeking help and treatment. The perception of mental illness won't change unless we act to change it" (

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay has focused many of our efforts and campaigns this year to fight various forms of stigma related to sexual assault, veterans asking for help, substance use disorders and suicide awareness. It feels only fitting to incorporate NAMI's slogan into this month's newsletter...

Building a Better Life: Paul's Story
Paul struggled most of his life with mental health issues.
A middle-aged man with a bipolar disorder diagnosis, he had experienced a childhood trauma - sexual assault by an older man. As an adult, he harbored self-blame and anger toward himself and his perpetrator.
Before coming to the Corbett Trauma Center for counseling, Paul attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings for alcohol dependence. Even though he had been sober for five years, he struggled to attend meetings consistently. He found socializing with others wore him down, and he often thought people at the meetings were making fun of him.

The #MeToo, #TimesUp, and #ItsonUs movements have made a dramatic impact on our nation and culture. In observation of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay joined with the University of South Florida's College of Behavioral & Community Sciences and the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute to co-host a special event: Community Colloquium: The Untreated Trauma of Sexual Assault - A Community Response.
Held April 13 at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Library in Tampa, the event drew more than 250 people. Juli Alvarado, Rena Romano, and Michelle Doherty shared their expertise through individual presentations and a Q&A panel discussion. Each speaker provided a unique perspective on sexual assault and emotional trauma.
Special thanks to Crisis Center board member Dr. Dae Sheridan for serving as moderator for the event.

We're looking for feedback from Crisis Center donors! We'll be sending out a short survey and need all donors to participate. Please, keep your eyes open for an email the first week of June and take a couple minutes to complete the Crisis Center survey when it arrives.

Beer & Bow Ties: Discounted Early Bird Tickets Now on Sale!
Beer and Bow Ties, an annual fund-raising event for the Crisis Center, was founded by Brent Kraus and Kim Randall out of their passion to help provide resources for suicide prevention and awareness after experiencing the loss of a loved one due to suicide. The fourth annual event will be from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.
Tickets for Beer and Bow Ties are now on sale, and you can take advantage of early bird pricing before July 4. General admission is $75 and VIP is $100. You'll enjoy an evening of local craft beer, local cuisine and specialty cocktails, as well as music by DJ Jonny Torres.

Local High School Student Raises Awareness about Suicide Prevention

Emily Surak is a junior at H.B. Plant High School in Tampa, serving as Miss City Beautiful Outstanding Teen 2018. As part of her platform, Emily has devoted herself to addressing the topic of teen suicide prevention.
Emily reached out to school leadership, students, and local businesses to organize a talent show to raise awareness about teen suicide and raise funds for the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. On March 27, people from the community gathered in the Plant High auditorium, where they were treated to an evening of dance, music performances, spoken word, and comedy.
Through Emily's efforts over $1,700 was raised!

Connecting the Gateway: Genesis Communications
The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay serves as the community's gateway to help, hope, and healing. Through a simple call to 2-1-1, people experiencing crisis and trauma can connect to over 3,000 services and programs. It's crucial that everyone in the Tampa Bay area know about this vital local resource!
Genesis Communications is running public service announcements on two of its stations, 1040 AM Sports Talk Florida and 820 AM News Talk Florida. Many thanks to this local company for playing a significant role in connecting people in our community to the gateway where they can find help!
