Sitting With Discomfort

We live in such a distracted world where at any small sign of sadness, discomfort, fear, pain, anger, we can easily numb it out - by making an impulse purchase, checking social media, watching three hours of Netflix, whatever it is. Picture this- you're out to dinner with a friend and they go to the bathroom. Do you sit in silence and potential awkward antsiness, or do you pull out your phone immediately? There is nothing inherently wrong with many of the vices we turn to. However, it is an important skill to develop emotional awareness surrounding discomfort and less pleasant emotions. The next time you feel something that you want to hide from or numb away, try sitting with it for a second or two longer. This helps you develop distress tolerance, understand yourself better and develop awareness, feel emotions so that they can pass. What do you tend to do when you feel uncomfortable?
March Journaling Prompts
Every month, you will be provided with journaling prompts to get you started, in order to reflect on the theme of the month, understand yourself better, and slow down mentally and emotionally.

What walls do I put up to prevent myself from feeling my emotions? When hiding from pain, am I also now hiding from joy?

What emotions am I scared of? How can I take care of myself when these overwhelming emotions may come?

Who could I share my true self with in a vulnerable, meaningful way?
