Five Fast Facts About the USEF Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention (MAAP) Policies:
What You Need to Know
On June 1, 2019, US Equestrian’s
Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention (MAAP) Policies
went into effect. These policies apply to USEF members who are 18 years old and older (regardless of their USEF age), referred to as “Adults” below. As members work to change their behaviors to further support and protect minor athletes (anyone under 18 years of age regardless of USEF age), in our sport, the following are five fast facts you need to know about the mandatory requirements outlined in the new USEF MAAP Policies:
1. While at USEF-sanctioned events, Adults’ one-on-one interactions with minors must be observable and interruptible.
2. Adults must include another Adult on all electronic communications (phone calls, texts, emails, social media messaging, etc.) with a minor. This requirement applies at all times, whether at a USEF-sanctioned events or at home.
3. Adults and minors can continue to friend or follow each other on social media platforms. They can continue to interact with each other’s posts that are visible to other users of the platform. However, Adults cannot maintain private messages with minors on social media or through any electronic communications, unless another Adult is included on the communication.
4. Adults may travel with a minor as long as another Adult or two other minors are in the vehicle as well. Adults must obtain written consent from a legal guardian before traveling with a minor alone.
5. Working students or barn workers under 18 years of age who travel or live with a trainer must have documented legal guardian consent to do so.

2019 Annual Convention Registration
The 2019 Annual Convention is on the horizon, and it's time to start preparing for our upcoming membership count deadline. Delegate counts are determined by the total number of Adult members your club has as of
June 30, 2019.
According to the 2019 AHA Bylaws, “Member Organizations which have at
least ten (10) Adult Members and/or Life Members shall be entitled to be represented at an Annual Convention by one (1) Voting Delegate per thirty-five (35) Adult or Life Members in good standing or part thereof.”
The scale for allotted delegates:
Number of Adult Members = Number of Delegates
10-35 = 1
36-70 = 2
71-10 = 3
106-140 = 4
141-175 = 5
176-210 = 6
211-245 = 7
246-280 = 8
281-315 = 9
316-350 = 10
351-385 = 11
386-420 = 12
421-455 = 13
Since the cutoff date falls on a Sunday this year, ALL new membership requests and renewals
must be received and processed in office before:
- End of the business day (5 p.m. MST) on Friday, June 28 or
- Via the AHA website by the end of the day Sunday, June 30
to ensure each request is added to your club’s delegate count in time.
This is the only time AHA has a “received” deadline rather than a “postmarked by” deadline.
Contact Beth Smith with any membership and/or Convention questions.
