Principal's Message
Summer is Here!

It is hard to believe but summer has arrived. We have had a great year of fun and learning. Our preliminary state test scores are looking better than they ever have in the school’s history, and our staff and students can finish this year feeling proud of all that they have accomplished.

Parents and guardians, thank you for investing in your child’s education here at Cubberley and for being a positive, supportive part of our school community. We appreciate our parents and could not do most of what we do without your assistance. I would like to thank the teachers and staff for giving the gift of education to our students. I admire their commitment and their boundless patience and energy.

I wish the 8th grade class of 2019 the best of luck in high school. We have given you the tools that you need to succeed and we know that you will go on to make us proud.

Thanks again for a great year! I hope you have a wonderful summer and we will see you back here on Wednesday, Aug. 28 for the first day of school.

~Mrs. Imbroane, Principal
A Fond Farewell
Dear Cubberley Families

I am saying my official goodbye and a fond farewell to Cubberley, as the office supervisor. I am retiring as of June 21, 2019. I have been at Cubberley for 25 years and 41 in LBUSD. I have worked with five principals at Cubberley.

Watching students grow from new kindergartners to 8th graders is enjoyable. I know I have been here a long time when students come back as parents to enroll their child. Cubberley has felt like family to me. My experiences have been so fun that many times it didn’t feel like a job. There have been so many parents, students, and staff members that have come and gone and I have made so many friends. Thank you to everyone who has made my job a great place to work.

~Cheryl Dennison, Cubberley Office Supervisor

Editor's Note: Cheryl has been an invaluable resource to Cubberley PTA. She is omniscient when it comes to the inner workings of Cubberley, and her expertise (and her dry wit) will be greatly missed. We thank her from the bottom of our hearts for her dedication to Cubberley, and wish her all the best in her retirement.
School's (Almost) Out for Summer!
Academic Attire Reminder

When shopping for next year's uniforms, please keep the academic attire requirements in mind. Elementary students must wear solid navy, light blue, or white tops and navy bottoms. Middle School students may also wear red shirts and dark denim, black, or khaki bottoms. The complete list can be found here.
Prosthetic Arm Team Moves on to Southern California Regionals
MESA (which stands for Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement) is a nationally recognized organization for middle school and high school students. Through hands-on and research projects, MESA helps develop the next generation of STEM leaders. The 7th and 8th grade students in Cubberley’s MESA Club began working on their group projects in September in preparation for the preliminary competition, which is held at CSULB in March. Project creations must follow the rules established by the California State MESA organization.

This year, one of Cubberley’s Prosthetic Arm Teams, consisting of 8th graders Grant C., Isaac G. and Jeffrey W., came in 1st place at the MESA Middle School Preliminary competition at CSULB. Only the 1st place teams in each event moved on to the Southern California Regional competition, held at University of California, Riverside on Saturday, April 13. The Cubberley prosthetic arm team competed against the 1st place teams from UCLA, USC, UCI, UCSB, UCSD, UC Riverside, and CSULA. Even though the competition was tough, the Cubberley team won 2nd place for their prosthetic arm design.

Congratulations to Grant, Isaac and Jeffrey! Thank you to the Cubberley School Foundation for supporting our MESA club and helping us promote STEM with our middle school students.

The last Jeopardy game of the school year was played last Saturday, June 8, at Bancroft Middle School. The winners from each of the participating schools competed against each other.

There were a total of 8 winners from different schools, including one from Van Nuys. Cubberley 8th grader, Owen D. competed but did not advance to the finals.

We are proud of our Cub, Owen!
PTA Needs You!
Cubberley PTA provides a number of valuable student enrichment and administrative support programs for Cubberley, but we can't do it alone! We need lots of volunteers for our various committees in order to make these programs happen.

Many of our volunteer tasks may be completed at home, on your own time, so there are many opportunities for both stay-at-home and working parents. Some require a weekly or monthly commitment and some pertain to events that only happen once per year. There is something for everyone who wishes to be involved!

Please view the list of volunteer opportunities here. If you are interested in helping out, or would like more information, please e-mail me at cubptapresident@gmail.com.

Robotics Teams at Robo Bowl 2019
The robotics program here at Cubberley consists of four seventh grade teams and four eighth grade teams. In robotics, students learn about robotic theory, systems, programming, and how to design and create robots for VEX Robotics competitions. Since competitions change every year, students need to be well-versed in robotic systems and construction in order to meet the requirements of each new challenge and be competitive in matches against other middle schools.

Each Spring, LBUSD hosts the Robo Bowl tournament at McBride High School. This year one 7th grade team, consisting of Matthew B., Jacob R., Matthew V. (with help from programmer Dhruva S.) and one 8th grade team, consisting of Santo C., Isaac G., Emily H., Johnny H. and Matilda I. both earned the coveted two spots on Cubberley’s Robo Bowl team. Robo Bowl was held on Saturday, May 4. All those months of hard work and practice really paid off as both teams competed in several matches that day and made it into the finals bracket. The 7th Grade team was awarded the Spirit Award for their dedication, cooperative spirit, and supportive behavior during the event.

Thank you to the Cubberley School Foundation for their support of our Robotics program. Without it our teams would not be able to build their advanced robots and join in competitions. Also thank you to the Cubberley families and members from other Cubberley robotics teams who turned out to support these amazing students. It was a great day to be a Cubberley Robo Cub!

Please remember that the Long Beach Unified School District requires all students in kindergarten through 8th grade to wear a school uniform. At Cubberley, this includes a solid white, navy, or light blue top and navy bottoms. Middle school students may also choose red shirts and dark denim or khaki bottoms. Spirit Wear is also encouraged.

Send a Note for Student Absences
Regular, on-time attendance is most important for success at school. Parents are strongly urged to send their child to school on time every day, unless he or she is ill. (Please plan family vacations around the school calendar.)

Phone calls will not be accepted to excuse absences. Instead, a written note from the parent or guardian is required. The note should be sent with the student upon return, and given to the teacher, or may be emailed to our attendance clerk, Brenda Camrin, at   bcamrin@lbschools.net. Absence notes need to include the child's first and last name, date(s) of absence, reason for absence, and parent/guardian signature.

Children returning after having a contagious disease will need to be readmitted through the nurse's office.

If your child is late to school and arrives before 9:30, they may go straight to class. A child arriving after 9:30 needs to check in with the office before going to class. Exception: if your child was at school, signed out and returned to school the same day, the office needs to have the return time filled in on the sign-out sheet.

If a student goes to the doctor or dentist, a note is required from the doctor/dentist for the absence to be excused.

Thank you for your cooperation!
