Elections Matter -- Are You Registered to Vote?
One of the most important things the BIA, and the entire federation, does on behalf of the homebuilding industry is to educate and support candidates who are business minded and understand our industry. Good policy decisions start with people who understand what we do and the value we bring.

The good news is that the vast majority of land-use decisions still happen at the local level, and that is where we are most effective with our active and engaged political action committee, NSBIA-PAC. The building industry leaders on the PAC committee research voting records, conduct polling, and analyze local and state initiatives and then thoughtfully allocates resources to key races or issues. 

In addition, local elected officials we've worked with often move on to state or national office and those relationships continue. For example, our local BUILD PAC trustees, Jeff Pemstein and Mike Winn, recently participated in district congressional visits for NAHB's Bringing Housing Home initiative.

But the most important part is getting people to the polls. Simply put, if you don't vote, your voice isn't heard.

The deadline to register for the June primary is next Monday, May 21. If you haven't registered, you can quickly do so online. And urge your friends and associates to carefully study the position of the candidates and housing and homeowership before they cast their ballots. Our ability to help make the American Dream possible for area families may be at stake.

CEC Mandates Solar Systems in All New Homes Starting in 2020
The California Energy Commission last week adopted new building standards that go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, that will require all new homes to have solar photovoltaic systems installed. CBIA CEO and President Dan Dunmoyer called the new standards a "fair balance between reducing greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously limiting increased construction costs." New Brookings Report Highlights Challenges for Sacramento Region Economy
In a report released last week on the economic health of our region, the Brookings Institution concluded that the six-county Sacramento region benefits from an educated workforce, world-class research institutions, and the presence of the state government. However, there were also significant challenges to growth, prosperity, and inclusion, including lagging growth of export industries, significant educational and wage disparities between races/ethnicities, and investment needs in regards to transportation and broadband infrastructure. USEPA Awards Grants to Sacramento Region to Spur Brownfield Redevelopment
The EPA has awarded $750,000 to the City of Sacramento for a brownfields revolving loan fund program that will be focused on the North Sacramento community. West Sacramento also received $300,000 from the EPA for brownfields assessments related to the Pioneer Bluff area. Awards like this make it possible to sustainably reuse these lands to create new housing and spur economic development opportunities in communities.

Roseville City Council Seeking Commissioners
The Roseville City Council is now accepting applications from citizens interested in serving as a Commissioner for various City boards and commissions. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must reside within the city limits of Roseville. Individuals interested in serving on various city boards and commissions are encouraged to apply. The Roseville Chamber of Commerce recently 
announced its Roseville 2018 Business Award winners, and two of them have strong BIA ties.

Jeff Jones with Westpark Communities was named Business Person of the Year, and BIA Legislative Advocate Jeff Short was named Young Professional of the Year. Congratulations to both!
THE BIG DAY OF GIVING
BIA members contributed generously during the Sacramento region's Big Day of Giving earlier this month. 

HomeAid Sacramento received more than $22,000 on May 3, shattering its goal of $10,000, said Executive Director Beth Kang. "HomeAid is fortunate to have so many generous donors. Their gifts are an investment in our mission to build dignified housing for our homeless neighbors," Kang said. The campaign was led by Michael Wagener with Marquee Media.
HomeAid has participated for several years but this year marked the first year the North State Building Industry Foundation was part of the Big Day of Giving. The Foundation received $500, which Executive Director Rick Lakey said was a promising first step since relatively few BIA members knew contributing to the Foundation was an option.

In all, nonprofits in the Sacramento region raised nearly $7.4 million from over 39,500 donations, this year, exceeding the $7.2 million raised last year and bringing the total generated since the inception of this annual giving day to more than $30 million, according to the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, which organizes the annual event.

High School Junior Internship Season Gets Under Way
Students and parents at the Placer County orientation.
The Foundation kicked off its high school junior internship season last week with a student/parent orientation in Placer County. The Elk Grove Unified School District will hold its orientation next week. 

This internship program has seen tremendous growth, from hosting just 14 students in its first year in Elk Grove to now in its fourth year hosting nearly 100 interns from 11 schools in six school districts in both Sacramento and Placer County.

We are so thankful to all of the partners that have helped to make the 2018 internship season a success, including the Placer County Office of Education, Elk Grove Unified School District, Lennar Homes, Taylor Morrison, USA Properties, Anthem United, the North State BIA, the Community College Foundation, and all of the trade partners who have given their time and materials to teach these students the tricks of the trades. For questions or to become a sponsor of the internship program, please contact Elizabeth at the Foundation.

75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS BEGIN SOON
Mark your calendar today so you don't miss BIA's gala 75th anniversary celebration, which kicks off on July 20th at the California Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento.
