This month we offer you a teaching on an ancestral figure pertinent to our Pachakuti Mesa Lineage. A large number of Pre-Columbian ceramics depict a cowled or hooded woman with prominent owl-like features, adorned with a necklace and earrings, and cupping the top portion of a San Pedro cactus in her hand. In several pieces she is shown with artifacts that are found on a traditional shaman’s healing altar including various plants and animals.

Owl woman, as she has come to be known, is portrayed in a variety of shamanic roles including midwife, herbalist, diviner, keeper of sacred lands and waters and preparing the dead for their other world journeys. In Moche folklore, as well as contemporary Peruvian curanderismo, the owl is considered a principal tutelary animal of both female and male healers. Pictured here is a Moche ceramic ceremonial vessel depicting Owl Woman. It was created around 350CE and portrays the healer’s patients at her feet.

Shardai Warmiquispe Kluger, RN has dedicated her life in service to the reawakening of the Sacred Feminine in all Her forms, and to the reclamation of the Sacred within our global village.
