NBG STUDIO SESSION
FILLING THE BOOK
Sunday, April 16, 12-4PM
in the NBG Studio at The Folk School
with Bev Byington and Mary Maisch

Looking for a few new ways to fill your beautifully handmade books?

We will look at a sampling of attractive lettering styles, and then focus on creating pleasing texts featuring inspirational messages, quotations, poems, or your own written work. You will learn how to embellish your personal style of writing by adding a variety of strokes, flourishes, or patterns. You will also be introduced to basic collage techniques as you play with different materials for adding imagery to the text on your page. You can use this time to relax, ponder and create ideas that you may  later put in your handmade books or fill some of your pages right away. You can get a head start on your May 26 Book Exchange book, as the theme is ... Quotations! Imagine creatively filling the inside of your  handmade books with great wonder, pleasure and surprise!

Bring: any supplies you think you might like to use ... blank books, scissors, glue,  scotch tape, pens, inks, markers, pencils, brushes,  special papers,  quotations or poems that you may want to letter in special ways,   stamps,  memory scraps, magazine clippings, small photos, etc.

We will provide a selection of markers and pens, ink, brushes, manila folders, a variety of papers, magazines, collage media, apples   and brownies.

This session is limited to six people.

NBG WORKSHOP
Word Birds!
Thursday, May 12, 6-8PM
at The Folk School
Mary Maisch, Instructor

Create your own Word Bird, a paper machè character with something to say! Using newspaper, masking tape, wire, colored tissue paper, bits of map or old book pages, and a few feathers, you will create a bird ready to stand or hang, just in time for spring migration!

This is a beginning level 3D sculpture project. No previous experience with paper mâché is necessary. You will learn to make a simple form with newspaper and masking tape, then apply finish layers of torn papers, which may be colored tissue, maps, or pages from old books. If you are willing to roll up your sleeves and get your fingers into the goo (dissolved cellulose in a medium called "art paste") there is no end to the fanciful forms you can create!   All materials are provided.

This workshop is for students ages 10 to 100!
Instructional fee: $20
Materials fee: $5, payable to instructor
