Hail to the 2019 College of Professional Studies Graduates
Excitement filled the air as the procession of soon to be graduates filed into the Charles E. Smith Center on May 18 to be formally recognized for their hard work and dedication as the newest recipients of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the College of Professional Studies (CPS) and the Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM).

Inspirational speakers and special award presentations contributed to the festivities, ending in a special charge to the graduates.

Sustainable Urban Planning Program Receives Accreditation
Accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB)
We are honored to announce that The Sustainable Urban Planning master’s degree has now received accreditation from the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB). This is a high academic standard that recognizes professional planning programs in North America based on performance, integrity and quality.

“PAB accreditation has elevated the Sustainable Urban Planning (SUP) program into the ranks of the truly elite planning programs, nationally and internationally. And, beyond the classroom, it places our program in a strong position to partner to the profession - in the National Capital Area and beyond," said Dr. John I. Carruthers, the Sustainable Urban Planning program director. 

GW Distinguished Scholar Overcame Many Obstacles to Education

A burning internal drive to strive for nothing short of excellence through hard-work, perseverance and determination have made all the difference for Dan Titus, a May 2019 graduate from the Integrated Information, Science and Technology (IIST) bachelor’s degree completion program. 

Titus has been awarded GW’s 2019 Distinguished Scholar Award by Provost Forrest Maltzman.

A newly revamped Faculty Directory, showcasing biographical information for 150 of our dedicated faculty and expert practitioners, was launched in April 2019.

Congratulations to Zhanar Kubekbai (CPS ’20), Strategic Public Relations student in the Graduate School of Political Management, who was selected as one of twelve semi-finalists in the New Venture Track of GW’s New Venture Competition.

Smithsonian Museum Director Speaks at GW about Native American History and Policymaking
Kevin Gover, director of the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian
Kevin Gover, the director of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, discussed his career and problems with the way Native American history is taught at a lecture in late April. His presentation was the keynote lecture of the Indigenous America University Seminar, a programming initiative led by Dr. Elizbeth Rule, assistant director for the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics & Policy (AT&T CIPP).

GW Launches Graduate Certificate for California Paralegals 

GW will launch a new, fully online graduate certificate in California Paralegal Studies, adding to the suite of well-established and rigorous paralegal studies programs offered by the university.

The new 24-credit graduate certificate is designed to meet the requirements of California Business & Professions Code §6450, offering California students the opportunity to study at a national ranked and accredited university.

There is now a 125-page report available, An Anatomy of Fake News - History, Populism, Partisanship, Technology and Solutions, a product of last year’s 2018 Breux Symposium on fake news sponsored by GW’s Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) and the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs at the Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communications (LSU).

Adam Brown was amongst the youngest students to graduate from GW in 2019, earning a master’s degree in political management from GW’s Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) at only 18 years of age.

Brown’s interest in American presidents and the political process began in preschool. He even worked on his first presidential campaign at the age of 7.

Melissa Feuer Selected as Inaugural Member of Academic Leadership Academy

Congratulations to Melissa Feuer, CPS’s assistant dean of students, for being selected as an inaugural member of GW’s Academic Leadership Academy. 

Feuer will participate in the yearlong, cohort-based program designed to further develop the skills of effective academic leaders, a new initiative organized by GW’s Office of the Provost. 

Faculty Member Mark Morgan Nominated to Head U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency

Congratulations to Mark A. Morgan, a CPS Homeland Security master's program degree faculty member, who was recently nominated by President Trump to head the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE).

On a panel about data privacy, Elaine Lammert, program director of GW’s master’s degree program for homeland security and cybersecurity strategy and information management and former principal deputy general counsel and special agent of the FBI, discussed ways that government and the private sector would need to work together to protect consumers’ data.

Lammert and Connie Uthoff, associate program director GW’s Cybersecurity Strategy and Information Management Master’s Program, both CPS faculty members, were part of a robust lineup of speakers at the eMerge Americas Tech Conference in Miami, FL.

Adele Ashkar, CPS’s associate dean for academic excellence, has been assisting with GW’s sustainable campus initiatives using her extensive experience in landscape design and sustainable plants.

She meets once a month with the Divsion of Operations and progress is being made all over campus.
