The Brazil mission team, which includes Pastor Sam, has arrived safely at their destination. With a layover in São Paulo, they spent a day as tourists. By Tuesday they had reached Felipe Camarão, Natal, where they were greeted at the church with a beautiful homecoming. Katie Arnold reports, "The team is doing great! It has been fun to reconnect with old friends and meet so many new friends!" The team will return to Bristol June 3.

The Worship Committee invites the congregation to participate in our 2019 Advent Devotional by submitting devotions of no more than 300 words. Your contributions will enhance our time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The committee needs to hear from you by August 1 to determine whether we will have the number of devotions needed for a booklet. We will have the pleasure of welcoming Chris Bingham and his family when they are Introduced in worship June 9. Chris will begin his ministry as our new Director of Traditional Worship June 10.

We thank Lilly Osborne and Katie McInnis for seven unstinting months of service as interim worship leaders in our early service. Anthony Childress, our new Director of Contemporary Worship, put together this short video to express the gratitude we all feel toward them. The beaming face behind the credits belongs to Finn Sproles. Lilly and Katie share their thoughts on their experience in articles below.

Serving with Lilly in worship over the past seven months has been such a precious blessing.

We are the body of Christ, and the body needs all the parts to work. God knit the hearts and abilities of Lilly and me. He had already gone ahead of us and prepared the way, as He always so faithfully does.

I learned to never say no to something just because I'd never done it before or didn't know how to do it. Our inadequacies are an open door and an invitation from our Abba Father to lean in close and depend on Him. So often we think that we can only serve if it's something we are good at. I sing, but I don't play an instrument, and I don't read music. I had also never previously led worship, with the exception of the women's retreat the previous year. Truth be told, I was terrified, but God was faithful, and each week brought with it greater joy and growth.

What has been greater than learning the ins and outs of leading worship is how deeply this process has changed my heart and relationship with Christ. Being submerged in worship and the word of God takes you into the presence of God, and you can't help but be changed in His presence. I have loved being able to worship with you. I will continue to serve on the worship team and am so thankful for and excited for the leadership of Anthony Childress. / Katie McInnis

Lilly Osborne

It has been such a pleasure and blessing to serve with Katie McInnis as worship leader/coordinator for the early service. I have loved music from as early as I can remember (my mother told me I sang before I talked). Although I don't have any degrees in music, I took piano lessons from the age of 8 to college and took some organ lessons as well. I played the organ for Bethel Presbyterian in Kingsport, when I was a student at King.

Although I have a musical background, worship leading was a new endeavor for me! I am so thankful to have had this opportunity and to serve with Katie. We complemented each other well, and we both learned and grew in this experience. As we planned and led, I discovered that my faith and relationship with Jesus grew. It was truly a wonderful experience, and I am so thankful for the opportunity. I plan on still serving as part of the worship team from time to time, and I'm looking forward to Anthony's servant leadership! / Lilly Osborne

Seventh and eighth graders will FISH for the first time this summer Monday, June 3, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. FISH stands for Fellowship in Someone's Home, and we are now looking for hosts in whose homes we can share a short lesson or devotion and have a lot of fun. We'll announce the location of our first meeting when we've found it!

We need folks to provide a meeting place, snacks, drinks, and an activity to give our kids an opportunity for fellowship. As this mid-13th century verse announces, summer is here now, despite what the calendar says. Mowing the med before it gets to blowing height is David Moore (May 29 -June 1), clearing the way to the first Sunday in June. Pentecost Sunday follows on June 9, and keeping the growth from graduating into flammable brush is Randy Olson (June 5 -8). Trinity Sunday, also Father's Day, demands double or, more correctly, triple attention from Pat Flannagan (June 12 -15), who will be newly sprung from musical direction duties. No cuckoos here, but loud sing all!

	Geraint Lewis

June 2 music: Our anthem will be "The Souls of the Righteous" (in memory of William Mathias) by Welsh composer Geraint Lewis (b. 1958). Written for a performance in St. Paul's Cathedral in 1992, it has become a contemporary classic, recorded more than 12 times. Lewis was a pupil of the legendary George Guest at St. John's College, Cambridge. On graduating, he was appointed to lecture at the Music Department of Bangor University under William Mathias. Academically, he has worked with H.C. Robbins Landon on Haydn and Mozart. In 1985 he edited the 80th Birthday Tribute to Sir Michael Tippett, and he is currently engaged on research into the music of William Mathias. Lewis has contributed to the New Grove Dictionary of Music, the New Grove Opera Dictionary, and the National Dictionary of Biography. He has composed some 150 works in virtually all genres. His church and choral music is widely performed by cathedral and college choirs throughout the UK. Lewis now lives in Cardiff, where he teaches, lectures, broadcasts, writes, and composes.

Organist's footnotes: The tune, KING'S WESTON, with which the text "At the Name of Jesus" is associated, was composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1925. John Hebden Schaffner (1945 -1995) used motivic material derived from "At the Name of Jesus" in his "Organ Motet for Christ the King" (prelude). Motets are usually described as mainly vocal musical compositions from the late medieval era to the present. Schaffner weaves the voices of the organ to "sing" his motet in a style straight out of the Renaissance, sounding simultaneously old yet new. A self-taught pianist and organist, Schaffner composed and published a number of keyboard works.

The subtitle of Dale Wood's "Voluntary on a Tune of Many Names" (offertory) lists HESPERUS, WHITBURN, QUEBEC, ELIM, and VENN as different names for the same tune. Under the name QUEBEC, this tune is used for our closing hymn, "Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts." Henry Baker (1835-1910) composed QUEBEC in 1854, when he was a student at Exeter College, Oxford. In 1861 the London Penny Post advertised for a suitable tune for John Keble's text "Sun of My Soul." A friend who had seen QUEBEC shortly after Baker wrote it submitted the tune anonymously. It was selected and published in Rev. John Grey's Hymnal for the Use of the English Church (1866). Its reference to the Canadian city and province is unknown.

"They'll Know We Are Christians" (postlude) is an arrangement by Wilbur Held (1914-2015) of our opening hymn. Peter Scholtes (1938-2009) wrote it while he was a parish priest at St. Brendan's on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s. At the time, he was leading a youth choir in the church basement and was looking for an appropriate song for a series of ecumenical, interracial events. When he couldn't find one, he wrote the now-famous hymn in a single day. His experiences at St. Brendan's and in the Chicago Civil Rights movement influenced him for the rest of his life.

June 9 music: Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem. The day is recognized as the beginning of the Christian church. Our anthem, "For Pentecost," illustrates the chaos that might have been part of the church's beginnings. It was composed by John Weaver (b. 1937), who wrote the text as well. Weaver served as Director of Music at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City (1970 -2005), Head of the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (1972 -2003), and Chair of the Organ Department at The Juilliard School (1987 -2004).

Organist's footnotes: I composed "Danza del Espiritu Santo" (prelude) for Pentecost Sunday when I was Organist and Choir Director at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, in Niagara Falls. Originally titled "Carillon," it won First Prize at the 2011 Regional Convention for the American Guild of Organists, Region V, in Lexington, KY. "Danza" is dedicated to my organ teacher, J. Melvin Butler, former Canon for Music at St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle. Butler's performance of it at the convention in Houston aired on National Public Radio's Pipe Dreams. He performed it while on tour in Japan, and I'm sure it has been performed countless other times since its publication by Morningstar Music.

During the Lord's Supper, the Sanctuary Handbell Choir will play a brand-new (2019) arrangement based on the hymn "Spirit of the Living God" (#288 in Glory to God). Both the words and music of this prayer-song were written in 1926 by Daniel Iverson, a Presbyterian minister from Tarboro, NC. The words were initially inspired by Jeremiah 18:1-6; a friend helped Iverson set them to music during an evangelistic meeting in Orlando, where the song was first sung.

Emma Lou Diemer's (b. 1927) arrangement of Psalm 104 (postlude) is based on the tune SONNE DER GERECHTIGKEIT, from the Bohemian Brethren's Kirchengeseng, published in 1566. The tune is played with the feet on the pedals throughout, while the hands remain busy with four-against-six 16th note configurations on the manuals.

Audrey and Chase Arndt are now in or traveling to Kenya, where for three years previously they served as missionaries. They are going back to reconnect with the pastors and families they trained and to share in God's grace through the continuing ministry. Chase and Audrey covet your prayers for safe travel and for fellowship that witnesses to God's glory in Christ.
