Refugee Swim Program commences in Cumberland

Close to 100 participants of refugee and asylum seeker background have entered a free learn-to-swim program at our Guildford and Granville Swim Centres.

The initiative, funded by Royal Life Saving, seeks to eradicate the high rate of drownings in culturally and linguistically diverse peoples and promote an environment of inclusion and safety in the pool.

Cumberland Council have partnered with schools and organisations, including Boronia Multicultural Services, to break down cultural barriers through leisure and improve aquatic skills.

The program commenced on Saturday 1 September and runs until the end of the October school holidays.

Working together to tackle homelessness in our community

Did you know the Cumberland local government area has the second highest number of people experiencing homelessness in NSW?

That's why Cumberland Council, together with DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club, Club Merrylands and Wenty Leagues, have collaborated to help fund a Homelessness Project Officer for the Cumberland area.

The role will work with local housing and support services and seeks to implement preventative measures to tackle homelessness in the community.

Together, we look forward to changing the narrative to action early prevention and intervention and improved housing conditions for a better community for all.
