Freegal is a downloadable music service that the Westchester Library System subscribes to. All you need to access the service is your Westchester Library card. You do not need any special software to use the service and all songs are in MP3 format with no Digital Rights Management (DRM).

The library has a weekly music download limit. From this limit, each library customer is given five (5) weekly music downloads, refreshing every Monday.

When this happens, the "download now" button is replaced with an "add to wishlist" button. Adding your music selections to the wishlist will place you in a "first come, first served" line to download the music after the limit refresh on Monday at 12:01 am (Eastern Time). At that time, simply visit the "my wishlist" page to download your wishlist songs or to remove a song from your wishlist. Every song has a sample clip that you can listen to before you download the song.

I Can Keep It?!

Yes! Believe it or not, once you download a song, it is yours to keep. You can transfer the songs to an unlimited amount of devices or even burn the music to a CD. It is yours to keep forever!

Moon Landing Movie Mania: Space Movies to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing this Summer at the Somers Library - Fridays: July 12, July 19, July 26, & August 2 from 12:00 pm-2:30 pm
  • July 12: Destination Moon (NR) - Almost two decades before it became a reality, Tinseltown imagined what the first trip to the moon would be like with this 1950 movie that's considered to be one of the first space-themed films to actually incorporate real science. Plus, the film won an Oscar for its convincing (for the 50s, anyway) special effects. Register here.
  • July 19: 2001: A Space Odyssey (G) - Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece isn't just one of the best space movies of all time-it's widely considered by critics as one of the best films in history. Spanning the dawn of mankind to the distant future, the film depicts humanity's quest to solve the mystery behind a strange object on the moon-all set to an iconic soundtrack. Register here.
  • July 26: The Right Stuff (PG) - Starring Sam Shepard, Dennis Quaid, and Ed Harris, this 1983 classic tells the story of America's earliest astronauts that led the United States' first attempt at manned spaceflight. The movie won four Oscars for its sound and visuals, and was nominated for four more-including Best Picture, but it lost to Terms of Endearment. Register here.
  • August 2: For All Mankind (NR) - This masterful 1989 documentary took all of the footage from the Apollo missions and whittled it down to less than two hours. It's narrated only by recordings of the astronaut's voices (Buzz Aldrin can be heard saying, "We came in peace for all of mankind") and mission control, layered with music by Brian Eno. Register here.

These movies are intended for adults, however, teens and children over 10 are welcome with an adult.

  • Discuss each person's interest in their car and what they hope to get out of the class
  • Give helpful car care guidelines and tips with time for Q & A
  • List useful car products
  • Show how to find and check for fuses
  • Show how to change a tire using a spare and the tools necessary to do it
  • Give a touch-up paint demonstration

The class will start out in the Program Room, then move outside to a driveway next to the library where Jason will demonstrate these points on a demo car parked there. Space is limited to 10 persons.
Jason Dickman has worked in the automotive industry for over 25 years in various aspects of automobile restoration, dealership and as a private car collection mechanic. Somers Seed Lending Library 2019. During library hours. With the start of spring slowly approaching, we are happy to announce that the Somers Seed Lending Library has new seeds added to our collection - thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Somers Library. Our hope is that you will enjoy gardening and picking the fruits of your labor. In order to give everyone the opportunity to participate in the seed library, please only take enough seeds to grow about 6-7 plants per seed pack.  All we ask is that at harvest time, you take some extra steps to save seeds for others. If possible, we would like you to return a portion of the seeds you have saved to the seed library. The more seeds in the library, the more members of our community can experience the pleasure of growing their own garden from local seeds. Please note: you must have an active Somers Library card to participate. Happy growing!

The titles will be mostly fiction, but could also be non-fiction or biographical. The titles will be chosen in consultation with the Somers adult reference library, Tara Ferretti, and based on currency, not on best-seller lists, not new, varied in terms of type and format, and substantive or suitable for discussions. Any Somers library user can register/attend. At the July meeting, the group will be reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee . At the end of the current month's meeting, book marks with the following month's selection will be handed out, and members will have enough time to check out the next month's selection as they leave the library. Space is limited to 20 people.  Register here.  Please include your email address in your registration.

News from the Somers Library Foundation

A library outranks any other one thing a community can do
to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.
~ Andrew Carnegie

The Somers Library is a treasured gathering place - our community's living room. It is where people of all ages come to learn, explore, create, and share. Our 36-year-old Library in Reis Park is well-loved but is overdue for several improvements to meet our community's changing needs.
Updating our decades-old beloved library would create an even better resource for our community. Because the Library's operating budget does not fund building improvements, Somers Library Foundation is asking for your help.
Your gift will help us make these exciting projects possible:
  • Children's Room: a safer entrance to a space that lets our kids be kids
  • Reading Room: new, comfy and flexible furniture
  • The Mix: a new, dedicated space for teens to talk, work, or just hang out
  • Studio Somers Library: new workspaces for creating, exploring, and learning
Please be an important part of our Library's future, go to https://somerslibraryfoundation.org/cause/donate-today
