New on the CNS Blog: Sharpening Understanding of How the Deaf Brian Sees
We often see it in superhero movies: When people are deprived of one sense, they develop superhuman powers in another sense. While those depictions may be exaggerated, the underlying premise has a real scientific basis. When the brain is deprived of input from one sense, such as hearing, it often compensates with above-normal performance in another sensory system, such as vision. Over the past decade, various neuroimaging, physiological, and other neuroscience studies have converged to create a more complete picture of the brains of the deaf, and, in particular, how visual abilities are enhanced.
In a new review paper
published in
the
Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience
, a team of scientists led by Caroline Alencar and senior author Stephen Lomber at the University of Western Ontario sought to synthesize what researchers know from both human and animal studies on the deaf. Read the full guest post.

Special Issue: Music & Eye-Tracking
Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics
In summer 2017, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics hosted, for the first time, a conference on the topic of what eye-movements, pupil dilation and blinking activity might tell us about musical processing (MET 17; http://ae.mpg.de/met17). More than 60 researchers from a diverse range of disciplines followed the invitation (psychology, neuroscience, all fields of music research including music ethnology and systematic musicology). As a result of the scientific exchange this Special Issue on Music & Eye-Tracking (https://bop.unibe.ch/JEMR/issue/view/793) emerged and is now finalized, freely available, and covers topics such as music reading, music during visual tasks, mobile eye-tracking during live performance, and pupillary responses to music. Due to the broad interest and success of the first conference, the second conference on "Music and Eye-Tracking" (MET 20) will take place on July 16th & 17th 2020 at the MPIEA in Frankfurt. Qualifications

Overview

Overview
Postdoctoral Fellow positions in data sciences in Dr. Kent Kiehl's laboratory are currently available at The Mind Research Network. The position is located in sunny Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Duties include working with a diverse research team on several grant funded studies examining the cognitive and neural systems underlying psychopathy, substance abuse, and related illnesses. We are also actively contributing to the emerging field of neuroprediction of future behavior. Candidates with a broad range of skills, including programming in Matlab, Python, and R are encouraged to apply. Machine learning/deep learning training is also useful but additional training will be available.
The position includes access to the world's largest forensic neuroscience data set - over 4000 offenders from a wide variety of security levels ranging from minimum security all the way to super-max. The postdoctoral fellow will have ample opportunities to write manuscripts from this data set and incorporate new ideas.
Applicants with publications in graduate school will be most competitive.
Qualifications
Requires a Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, computer science or related field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been attained. Those with experience and interest in genetics, and/or substance abuse are strongly encouraged to apply.
Must have Matlab and programming experience.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness and experience working as part of a large research team, as well as success performing independent research projects of varying scope. This position requires superior professional-level verbal and written communication skills which are required to effectively perform in the role, as well as excellent judgment, and problem-solving and decision-making skills.

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain) offers permanent research positions for Group Leaders in three main broad areas or research:
(1)-Language, reading and developmental disorders: How language acquisition, comprehension, production, and reading take place in the human brain. Special attention will be paid to language disorders and the development of computerized tools for their early diagnosis and treatment.
(2)-Multilingualism and second language learning: The cognitive and brain mechanisms of language acquisition and processing in a second language, taking into consideration the age of acquisition, proficiency and usage. The Center promotes a rich research environment without substantial teaching obligations. It provides access to the most advanced behavioral and neuroimaging techniques, including 3 Tesla MRI, a whole-head MEG system, four ERP labs, a NIRS lab, a baby lab including an eyetracker, two eyetracking labs, and several well-equipped behavioral labs. We are looking for cognitive neuroscientists or experimental psychologists with a background in psycholinguistics and/or neighboring cognitive neuroscience areas, computational modelers, and physicists and/or engineers with fMRI/MEG expertise.

A specific focus will be on developing means to integrate immersive, interactive, virtual reality, and other hardware, with OP-MEG to facilitate potentially transformative cognitive neuroscience projects including those involving patients with amnesia.

Position Description
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is seeking a full-time post-doctoral position focused on understanding the neural correlates of human memory. This position involves studies focused on analyzing and manipulating human intracranial electrophysiological signals, including single-unit activity, local field potentials, and intracranial EEG (iEEG), captured from participants with drug resistant epilepsy and from participants receiving deep brain stimulation surgery. Post-doctoral fellows will join a laboratory aimed at understanding the neural mechanisms that underlie human episodic memory formation and decision making and at developing novel and innovative techniques to directly communicate with those circuits.
We are seeking candidates that are highly creative, motivated, and independent with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Candidates must have a strong research background, with a record of relevant publications. Candidates will be encouraged and expected to participate in independent laboratory research, and will be expected to write scholarly manuscripts. Candidates must be able to lead and work well in a team. Candidates should have strong computational, quantitative, and/or engineering skills, with proficiency in developing custom code (Matlab, Python, etc.) for data analysis preferred. Past medical research is not required, but candidates must be willing to perform experiments in a clinical setting. Candidates will interact with clinical staff, graduate students, research fellows, and must have excellent spoken and written English skills.

Overview
A postdoctoral fellowship position is available at The Mind Research Network in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Claus. The candidate will work on a project that is examining neural mechanisms of behavior change in alcohol use disorders using longitudinal neuroimaging (MRI/fMRI, MEG).
Primary responsibilities of this position include implementation of longitudinal analyses, machine learning for outcome prediction, and integration of multimodal neuroimaging data. Candidates will be expected to contribute to ongoing data analyses and will have opportunities to lead manuscripts and grant applications. Because of the collaborative nature of this project, the candidate will also have opportunities to work with other investigators at MRN and the University of New Mexico (including Drs. Katie Witkiewitz, Jon Houck, and Barbara McCrady).
Qualifications

The primary responsibilities of this postdoctoral fellow (postdoc) will be to perform independent research in the area of image processing and algorithm development with application to brain imaging and genetics data. The position will also involve interacting with patients from various clinical populations and healthy controls. The postdoc will be responsible for the development or selection of proper statistic tests, algorithms and methods, as well as developing new ideas that promote current research. The postdoc will be expected to publish the findings in peer-review journals and over time to compete for extramural funding.
Specifically this person will:
1. Conduct independent research, which requires decisions as to methodology employed.
2. Perform fundamental scientific tasks on own, exercising judgement in selecting the methodology.
3. Analyze, tests, and investigates specific phases of research.
4. Assist with the resolution of problems and documents/reports results.
5. Analyze, interpret, and report data in manuscripts.
6. Write and review grant protocols.
7. May develop and tests tools to be used to answer specific scientific questions.
8. Collaborate with other scientists and investigators in same or other labs as necessary providing advice and assistance with research and in areas of expertise.
9. Report results of research in the form of open literature publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
10. Develop scientific network through societies. May participate in special committees as appropriate.
11. Performs other related duties and tasks as required or assigned.
Qualifications
Requires a PhD in a related discipline and a minimum of 3 years of research work performing related duties.
Experience with R/Python programming is required and experience with neuroimaging software (e.g., AFNI, FSL, etc.) is preferred. Most of the projects involve analyses of multi-modal data in a multi-disciplinary setting, i.e. studying the relationship between functional and structural MRI images, from populations of healthy individuals and individuals with clinical disorders. Basic skills needed for the projects are programming, multivariate association statistics, and scientific manuscript writing.
Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Our lab is affiliated with the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences (BIAC) and the Linguistics Program, which includes a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of language researchers with expertise in cognitive linguistics, neurolinguistics, multilingualism, language acquisition, language and aging, sociolinguistics, inter/intraspecies communication, and cognitive neuroscience. State-of-the-art scanning and data analysis facilities are available and located at BIAC in the Duke Medical Center. Research focuses on cognitive neurolinguistics, fMRI studies of language(s), the role of multilingualism and musicianship in building cognitive reserve, approaches to delaying the onset of symptoms of dementia. Methodology includes sociolinguistic research methods and ethnographic methods.
The ideal candidate would have a background in linguistics and cognitive neuroscience. Experience with fMRI data analysis (including FSL) and/or programming would be beneficial. The successful candidate will join a cognitive neuroscience lab (Director: Dr. Hwamee Oh) in the MAP to study behavioral and neuroimaging markers of preclinical Alzheimer's disease and work closely with a team of experts in aging and Alzheimer's disease on integrating fMRI, MRI, PET, cognitive, genetic, and biofluid measures.

Dr. Elizabeth Chrastil, PI of the Spatial Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California, Irvine, is seeking two postdoctoral researchers for the coming year. The Spatial Neuroscience Lab uses dynamic and interdisciplinary research methods to answer questions about how the brain processes information to keep us oriented as we navigate through a complicated world. Our primary techniques are fully immersive virtual reality and neuroscience brain imaging using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (structural MRI, fMRI, diffusion imaging, resting state) and electroencephalography (EEG).
1. One postdoc position relates to projects that focus on the basic neuroscience of navigation, learning, and memory, as well as clinical and translational applications. Numerous opportunities for exploration and the development of creative data science approaches are available. A very strong statistical background is highly desired. Lab and institutional resources include a new research-dedicated 3T Siemens Prisma scanner, an active Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and a newly established sleep center. In addition to working on new projects, there are also abundant opportunities to work with existing data across multiple research programs. Requirements for the position include: a Ph.D. in neuroscience or related field, strong background in MRI data analysis including multivariate methods (multivariate pattern analysis/representational similarity analysis), and demonstrable skill in one or more programming languages (e.g. Matlab or Python). Exceptionally strong statistical skills are highly desired. The successful applicant would have a strong first-author publication record and a demonstrable interest in learning and memory. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are a must. A desire to mentor and teach graduate and undergraduate students in the lab is also a plus. The Spatial Neuroscience Lab uses dynamic and interdisciplinary research methods to answer questions about how the brain processes information to keep us oriented as we navigate through a complicated world. Our primary techniques are fully immersive virtual reality and neuroscience brain imaging using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). The position is ideal for recent graduates interested in pursuing graduate work in cognitive neuroscience, medicine, psychology, or bioengineering as a way to gain experience and make scientific and scholarly contributions to neuroscience.
Duties: Primary research responsibilities include recruiting participants for experiments, preparing stimulus presentation scripts, data collection for neuroimaging and immersive virtual reality experiments, computer programming and configuring testing computers for behavioral testing, writing and editing code to process, analyze and visualize experimental data, and assisting the research team in processing and analyzing data from these experiments. Lab Manager responsibilities include training and supervising undergraduate research assistants, tracking study progress, and some administrative duties (e.g. IRB protocol management and overseeing lab operations).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
