Staff Feedback Requested re: Student Calendar

Due to recent changes in state law which require school districts to begin class no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day, we would like your feedback to help guide us as we prepare our 2020-2021 student calendar.
Historically, our district has looked for ways to incorporate as many of the items listed below into our student calendar as possible. However, with the new law we will be required to start school later than we may have in the past, and there is not as much flexibility within the calendar as there once was.
We have made the assumption that all of these items are a top priority for our staff, without having hard data as to whether that is accurate. As such, we would like to gather staff feedback to determine which of these items are truly most important to you.
The survey will ask you to rank each item from most important (1) to less important (6). We will then use this feedback to prepare several calendar options for staff to vote on prior to presentation to the Board of Education in November.
- Longer Christmas Break (ex: this year break is two weeks long)
- Full Week at Spring Break
- Earned Days Off Immediately Following P/T Conferences
- Three-Day Thanksgiving Break
- Ending School Year Before Memorial Day
- Less Than Five Day Week First Week Back (with students)

October Board of Education Meeting Update

The Jefferson City School District Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday, October 14th. The
agenda
included:
- Recognition for the monthly Difference Makers (see more below);
- Discussion of 2019-2020 bus routes and update from Director of Facilities, Transportation & Safety Frank Underwood on the district's transition to tiered routing;
- Approval of a budget amendment to account for an increase in county stock insurance collections and tornado-related expenditures;
- Vote on declaration of Simonsen as surplus property.

JC Schools looking at ways
to address K-8 needs
At the October 14th Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Linthacum shared that the district continues to assess overcrowding at the elementary and middle school levels. The possibility of a no-tax increase bond issue has been discussed to pursue the construction of buildings for 5th and 6th graders, which would relieve overcrowding at district elementary and middle schools.
No decisions have been made, but the school board will hear the findings of a facilities focus group in November. The group, made up of JC Schools parents, current and former school board members, business owners, community members, teachers, retirees, and others, has been meeting to look at options for the district.

Simonsen deemed a surplus property
After a period of unknowns regarding the former ninth-grade center, the JC Schools Board of Education unanimously approved to declare Simonsen surplus property. This step is a formality to allow the district to begin the process of determining next steps for the building.
The district could take three approaches: sell the building as-is, renovate the building to its pre-tornado state or better, or demolish the building.

October's JC Schools Difference Makers!

STAFF: Callie Spurgeon is a difference maker because of her passion for education and people. Her joy for teaching creates a more positive and upbeat atmosphere not only for our team, but our "pod" of 4th and 5th grade teachers at Pioneer Trail.
STUDENT: Delanie Benke is the definition of a Difference Maker. We recently had a new student arrive at TJMS who knew very little, if any English. When we began our Fitnessgram testing, Delanie noticed our new student didn't have a partner. She decided to step out of her comfort zone, and take the student under her wing.

LCMS' very own orchestra teacher, Kristen Foster, represented JC Schools on October the 4th in the side-by-side Extra Credit concert with the St. Louis Symphony. Music educators from across the state participated in an application process in order to be selected. Kristen shared with us that
"It was such a privilege to have the district's support!"

This past weekend, the JCHS Debate Team traveled to Parkway West High School to start off the season. After the competition was over, students earned
32 individual awards,
and that also clinched the
2nd place finish Overall as a school
- just right behind Ladue High School of St.Louis. This was an amazing beginning to the year. If you know/see these students, please give them a congratulations.
The team travels next to Lee's Summit High School in Kansas City on November 1-2.

JC Jays Football Heads to the H.O.F.!
|
|
We are excited & honored to announce that the Jefferson City Jays High School Football Program is being inducted into the
Missouri Sports Hall of Fame
this November!! This program has meant so much to so many in our community over the decades, and we are *beaming* with Jay Pride!!
The JCHS football team was the first to win 10 state titles (1976, 1977, 1978, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997) in Missouri high school history. The program has played in 23 state semifinals and also has two state runners-up (1979, 1998). Additionally, it has produced 10 All-Americans. The induction will be extended to all players and coaches, past and present.
