A U-M team led by Mary Rogers, Ph.D., M.S., found that children who received all recommended doses of rotavirus vaccine had a 33 percent lower risk than unvaccinated children of getting diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Yet the study also found more than a quarter of American children don't get fully vaccinated against rotavirus, and that the rate varies widely across the country.

Scott Roberts, Ph.D., M.A., professor of Health Behavior and Health Education at the U-M School of Public Health, has been appointed co-chair of the Michigan Dementia Coalition (MDC). The MDC is a statewide group of more than 120 individuals from approximately 65 organizations that works to identify opportunities to improve quality of life for Michigan residents with dementia and their families.

The MDC has just released a comprehensive Roadmap for Creating a Dementia-Capable Michigan to guide policymaking and advocacy efforts around dementia in Michigan.

More research is required to understand the root causes of disparities in the use of preventive services, patient acceptance of preventive recommendations, and how barriers can be addressed through provider and community interventions. IHPI Director John Ayanian, M.D., M.P.P., and Tiffany Veinot, Ph.D., associate professor of information, recently spoke on this topic at an NIH Pathways to Prevention (P2P) Workshop on Achieving Health Equity in Preventive Services.

The workshop assessed the available scientific evidence on achieving health equity in the use of clinical preventive services in a health care setting, focusing on three leading causes of death in the United States: cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
