Policy-Focused Impact.
June 2019

On May 10, as part of a joint University of Michigan/Harvard University initiative, hundreds of stakeholders convened for a day-long summit, "Opioids: Policy to Practice," to discuss evidence-based approaches to address the nation's opioid crisis. The full webstream of the Summit, along with brief speaker videos, visual abstracts, and summary articles are now available via the Opioid Summit website.

The next Summit of this partnership will take place on October 10, 2019, at Harvard University.

More information about all opioid research at the University of Michigan can be found on the Opioid Solutions website.

A U-M team led by Mary Rogers, Ph.D., M.S., found that children who received all recommended doses of rotavirus vaccine had a 33 percent lower risk than unvaccinated children of getting diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Yet the study also found more than a quarter of American children don't get fully vaccinated against rotavirus, and that the rate varies widely across the country.

On June 24, 2019, President Trump signed an executive order and bipartisan Senate legislation was introduced, both allowing health savings account eligible high-deductible health plans (HSA-HDHPs) the flexibility to cover essential medications and services used to treat chronic diseases prior to meeting the plan deductible. These actions are the result of the work of IHPI member Mark Fendrick, M.D., and supporters to implement value based insurance design concepts into policy.

Clinicians, administrators, and policymakers should consider ways to support the mental health and well-being of older adults as they go through residential transitions, according to a U-M study that looked at deaths by suicide among people 55 and older. The study was led by Briana Mezuk, Ph.D., an associate professor of epidemiology.

A new analysis of data from the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) by a U-M team led by Andrew Ryan, Ph.D., M.A., professor of health management and policy, suggests that accountable care organizations' achievements in 'bending the cost curve' may reflect the departure of high-cost physicians.

More research is required to understand the root causes of disparities in the use of preventive services, patient acceptance of preventive recommendations, and how barriers can be addressed through provider and community interventions. IHPI Director John Ayanian, M.D., M.P.P., and Tiffany Veinot, Ph.D., associate professor of information, recently spoke on this topic at an NIH Pathways to Prevention (P2P) Workshop on Achieving Health Equity in Preventive Services.

The workshop assessed the available scientific evidence on achieving health equity in the use of clinical preventive services in a health care setting, focusing on three leading causes of death in the United States: cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

"The role of health literacy and health communication on health care access and outcomes among vulnerable populations is a core focus of my research. What can be done to ensure that individuals with disabilities, inadequate health literacy, and/or limited English proficiency achieve equitable health care?"
