New Ministers

Thank you for the warm reception and welcome to St. James. We are so thankful to be here and look forward to serving together in ministry with you.
Max and Anna Kate

Max Vincent- A Georgia native, and the son of a Methodist minister. Max graduated from Franklin County High School and then went to Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He spent the summer of 1989 working on an archeology site in Ashkelon, Israel, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion. While at Wofford he was the first director of their new student volunteer program. He began studying at Duke Divinity School in the fall of 1991. The following summer he was a awarded a three week study to visit Syria, Jordan, Israel, and Greece. In 1992-93, he studied theology at the University of Bonn, Germany. He completed his Masters of Divinity in 1995 and then a Masters of Theology in 1996.

Since finishing seminary, Max has served as a pastor in North Carolina and Georgia and also served as a chaplain at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Max loves preaching and leading worship, golf, reading, cooking and hiking.

He met his wife Kristen at Duke in 1993, and they were married on May 20, 1995.

organizing and decorating.

Max and Kristen have one son Matthew, and a dog, Gracie.  Matthew is fourteen years old and attends Grady High School.  He loves soccer, art , reading, and playing guitar.

AnnaKate Rawles-AnnaKate was born in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina. During a mission trip to New Orleans, she felt the call to ordained ministry. With the mentoring of her grandfather Gene Lamb, a retired United Methodist Minister in the North Georgia Conference, she sought to explore her call throughout her high school and college years.

She attended Converse College, a liberal  arts women's college, where she earned  her Bachelor of Arts in English and Religion  in 2010. While there, she was active in  various aspects of student government and cultivated her passion for caring for others.

Following college AnnaKate attended Emory University's Candler School of Technology where she earned her Masters of Divinity in 2013. She also attended Cambridge University where she received a certificate for theology in ministry. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Ministry degree with a focus on Biblical Interpretation and Proclamation from the Candler School of Theology.

AnnaKate has served in the Louisiana Annual Conference since 2013, and was ordained as an Elder in Full Connection in 2017.

Her first appointment was as an Associate Pastor at Christ UMC, where she led the contemporary worship service. Since 2014, AnnaKate had been an Associate Pastor at Munholland UMC in the greater New Orleans area, where her focus has been on pastoral care, outreach, and worship.

She enjoys, traveling, volunteering at the Audubon Aquarium in the penguin habitat, and spending time with her husband Brian Trepanier and their pets Merlin and Arthur.

Preschool
As the end of summer draws nigh, we are eagerly anticipating the start of another preschool year. September 2018 marks not only the beginning of the 48th year of the preschool, but also the
beginning of a time of change for this program. I am excited about all the new and great things that are happening at the school and look forward to guiding us into the future.

In the spring, the three year old and Prek classes planted  tomatoes, sugar snap peas, peppers and pumpkins in our  Edible Classroom, i.e., the garden. Over the summer, there will be a bountiful harvest that we will share with anyone who wants them. In addition, in the past nine months our chickens have been laying eggs and have enjoyed the company of the children when they are in the garden. Our lovable Stan Malone has been taking care of and keeping things clucking in the hen house. Stan's girls have been joined, in a separate house, by some quail that we hatched during the year. The children have learned that chicken eggs are larger than quail eggs, chickens like to peck their feet and quail live in the wild. Science abounds in our new Edible classroom in many ways.

Over the summer, we have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming school year. On August 27, our teachers return full of enthusiasm and overflowing with new ideas to begin preparation for the arrival of their children. Anxious new parents come for  orientation on August 29; and finally, on September 4, the  children's wing of the church will again bustle with sweet  preschoolers. It is so exciting.

Our philosophy states that as a ministry of St. James United  Methodist Church, each person involved in the preschool is called to love as God loves and to provide a loving, creative environment for each and every child enrolled in our program.

As we plan and prepare our activities, events and curriculum, we keep this philosophy and our mission statement foremost in mind to ensure that all the children entrusted to our care have the best opportunity possible to thrive and develop. It is amazing to think how many children have been loved and cared for by this church ministry over the life of the school.

As always, the preschool will be hosting some wonderful events this year. They include the Silent Auction, book fair, and our annual carnival as the pre-eminent ones. We are grateful to all the members of the St. James community who have  participated in our events in the past, and invite each of you to visit our program and share again in our activities this
upcoming school year.

As we approach the 2018 preschool year, we look forward to all the good things a new year brings. We are proud to share in the ministries of St. James, and pray always to reflect the values of this church. With God's guidance and the support of our wonderful church and preschool staff, our families, and the members of this congregation, we can accomplish so much for the good of children and continue to grow as a preschool.

Children's Ministry
Thank You for a Great VBS Week!
Your St. James Children's Ministry has just wrapped an amazing week of Vacation Bible School! We welcomed 140 children to learn the story of Moses and live the lives of Hebrews in Egypt. This could not have happened without the help of over 70 volunteers! Adults and youth worked together to prepare ahead of time, open an authentic Bazaar of nine interactive shops, lead games that reinforced important biblical lessons, teach music and dances following Moses' life events, bake delicious bread, present a daily drama, and lead 15 tribes of children with love, patience, wisdom, and understanding. It was truly a magical week that will stay with everyone involved for years to come. Thank you to everyone for all of your efforts to make "Vacation Bible School: Led to Freedom"come alive!

Music Ministry

Carnegie Hall
From June 6-11, members of the St. James' Chancel Choir had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. After a tedious audition process last Fall, we had the honor of being invited to perform. We sang Jubilate Deo by composer Dan Forrest in combination with choirs from all over the country. Some of you might remember the name, as he composed the Requiem for the Living, which we presented in worship in November 2017. The work, based on Psalm 100, "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the Earth," combines seven different languages: Arabic, English, Hebrew, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and the South African language, Zulu.

The work was a challenge for us, but seemed easy under the direction of world-renowned conductor, Maestro Henry Leck. (Don't worry-- we saved some time for sightseeing too!) The marquee above, though it will be difficult to make out in this picture, lists "St. James UMC Atlanta- Michael Scott Ervin, Director." An official framed copy of this poster will be placed in our choir room sometime in the coming weeks.

Shortly after arriving home, a few other members of the Chancel Choir left for Greenville, SC, where we performed another major choral work with the Rivertree Singers and Friends Choral Festival. Your Chancel Choir is out sharing the love and joy of music with people from all around the U.S.
