More Than One Reason to Come to This Thursday's Student Art Show
Reason #1: To see and discuss your own son's or daughter's artwork!
Yes, but also . . .
A report released recently by the
Arts Education Partnership (AEP) shows
connections between instruction in the arts and greater student achievement and
social development.
"It is clear that there are cognitive skills and motivational and communications
skills that are highly developed in arts learning -- skills that are applicable in
school settings," says Richard J. Deasy, director of the AEP, who edited the
compilation report.
Areas that instruction in the arts affects most are reading skills, language
development, and writing skills. Improvements in general academic skills also
show up and appear to reinforce those specific literacy-related developments.
Those general skills include focus and concentration, expression, persistence,
imagination, creativity, and "inclinations to tackle problems with zeal."
In addition, a variety of social skills accompanies learning in the arts and
engagement in arts activities, including positive social behaviors, the ability to
express emotions, courtesy, tolerance, conflict-resolution skills, the ability to
collaborate, and attention to moral development.
Several studies in the report dealt with the relationship between music and
language development. "Music itself is kind of a language," says the report.
Studies also have shown that music helps develop spatial reasoning, which is
used in both music and mathematics, it adds.
"I think this [report] makes it a matter of equality that all children have arts
education," says Deasy. "Involvement in quality arts learning is a key factor in
helping kids' academic success."
See you Thursday evening!

Alex Garcia
"
This past year I've started to love living here even more. I've become more connected with so many people and I've learned so much about different cultures and perspectives. I think my story shows that if you are dedicated and you work as hard as you can, opportunities will present themselves in some form. What you do with those opportunities is up to you.
