Note from the Executive Director MAPS is accelerating efforts to engage our community and launch programs and projects to improve healthcare safety in our state and beyond. From engaging individuals through both philanthropic giving and volunteerism, to being well underway on two grant-funded projects, to working with other nonprofit organizations and professionals to more effectively communicate our mission and purpose (see your MAPS teams members on a recent KARE 11 feature here ), we support your organizational and personal efforts to improve patient safety. Change is in the air as we transition into autumn, but it’s also in the air for MAPS as we grow our organization and our impact. Thank you for your support! –Catherine

First-ever MAPS participation in Give to the Max Day is set for Thursday, November 14, 2019, for Individual Giving: your gift will be doubled by a generous match We kindly invite individuals and families to donate to MAPS during Give to the Max Day to support the prevention of medical error and advance safe care everywhere. This year’s Give to the Max Day gifts donated to MAPS will be matched in honor of Bert William Stewart III, who passed away due to complications from a preventable adverse event in 2012. The Stewart Family is generously matching total gifts up to $5,000 as part of the popular MN Give to the Max Day. We sincerely thank the Stewart family for their generous contribution to making healthcare safer for everyone. Early giving opens on November 1 and Give to the Max Day is on Nov. 14. More information will be forthcoming; be sure to watch our Facebook and LinkedIn pages for updates. On behalf of our board of directors and team, we hope you will individually support MAPS. MAPS will simultaneously be conducting our typical annual contribution campaign (details below) for fundraising directly from healthcare organizations .

Gearing up for the annual MAPS Contribution Campaign in mid-November for Organizational Giving In mid-November, we will kick-off our yearly Contribution Campaign for organizational giving. A key contact in your organization will receive an email and letter request from MAPS. A financial contribution to MAPS demonstrates your organization’s dedication to safety and recognition that safety is advanced best when approached collaboratively. MAPS is the only nonprofit organization in MN focused solely on reducing medical errors in healthcare delivery. Your organization’s partnership and financial contribution make our mission of “Safe Care Everywhere” possible. Formal Launch of MAPS Volunteer Program MAPS engages patients, residents, and families to improve healthcare safety in our work, and helps to bring that voice and perspective to other collaborations to which we belong. There is no better example of this than launching our formal volunteer program on October 2. The group of over 10 volunteers got to work right away as they gave consumer input to help shape the future of the state’s adverse health event reporting system. Rachel Jokela, Program Director at the Minnesota Department of Health, states, It was vitally important to have this perspective in our work. The group of volunteers presented new ideas in a way we hadn’t thought of before. We warmly welcome you or your referrals of volunteers to join us! Recent highlights from our work this summer and fall: Our quality improvement project dedicated to preventing diagnostic error due to failures in laboratory and radiology test result communication, “Stop Dropping the Ball: Improving Diagnosis across Transitions of Care in Rural Communities,” is advancing. The project brings Lakewood Health System in Staples, researcher Dr. Andrew Olson from the University of Minnesota, MAPS, and the Staples community together to provide solutions as we acknowledge this national issue. On October 10, community members in Staples, MN came together to inform the research and brainstorm solutions as we prepare to plan for improved processes. Funding for this project comes from Constellation/MMIC and a Stratis Health Building Healthier Communities award. Another project, “Establishing Engaged Community Advisory Boards in Assisted Living”, in partnership with Care Providers of Minnesota, will inform a replicable statewide model and will result in better outcomes and experiences for tenants, families, and staff. We recently had a productive and fun “Design Day Workshop” on September 26 hosted at Yorkshire Assisted Living. The event had over 20 twenty participants, including assisted living leaders, representatives from Elder Voice, Care Providers, the Office of the Ombudsman for Long-term Care, and of course, residents and tenants. We worked on planning our pilot events with involved communities and those will launch early this winter. Funding for this work comes via Care Providers, from a Stratis Health Building Healthier Communities award.

Public speaking and presentations since our last newsletter in June. MAPS welcomes public and private opportunities to present on the topics of patient safety basics, safety leadership and culture, as well as principles for patient and family engagement to improve safety. If you are interested in having MAPS staff speak to your patients, staff, leaders, or at an event, email  MAPS to learn more. Set Aside Funding for Engagement Starting in 2020, we are excited to announce that MAPS will be offering services to support healthcare organizations and communities to bring the patient/resident/family voice more powerfully into safety improvement. Our services will strengthen your patient/resident/family advisor and partner programs. We want you to be able to take advantage of all the services we will have coming and request that you set aside funds to be able to participate fully. MAPS member organizations will have reduced rates for services and workshops. Please request that funding be set aside if your organization is interested in training opportunities for your dedicated patient/resident/family advisors and partners to be more empowered, engaged, and knowledgeable to advance safety in your organization. Our 10 th Biennial Conference We are less than a year away from our celebratory 10th biennial Conference (to be held April 30 & May 1, 2020). Our conference theme is “All In. Safer Together.” Event planning is well underway as most general session speakers have been selected. We are designing the conference to provide valuable information across all settings of care, specifically as we seek to attract more attendees from long-term care, aging services, and ambulatory care settings. Please save the date and stay tuned for conference updates. The conference will once again be at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest.
