HIGHLIGHTS

On May 10, as part of a joint University of Michigan/Harvard University initiative, hundreds of stakeholders convened for a day-long summit, "Opioids: Policy to Practice," to discuss evidence-based approaches to address the nation's opioid crisis. The full webstream of the Summit, along with brief speaker videos, visual abstracts, and summary articles are now available via the Opioid Summit website.

The next Summit of this partnership will take place on October 10, 2019, at Harvard University.

More information about all opioid research at the University of Michigan can be found on the Opioid Solutions website.

Two years ago this month, IHPI released the first report of the National Poll on Healthy Aging ---- a signature program for the institute. Conducted by a core team of IHPI-affiliated faculty and staff, and supported by AARP and Michigan Medicine, the poll aims to inform the public, health care providers, policymakers and advocates on issues related to health, health care, and health policy affecting Americans 50 years of age and older.

There are several noteworthy developments related to the poll.

The U-M Board of Regents approved Justin B. Dimick, M.D., M.P.H., professor of surgery, as the new chair of the Department of Surgery at the U-M Medical School. Dimick began his appointment on June 1 and now oversees a team of more than 135 faculty and hundreds of staff, in a department that dates back to 1849. Together, they perform more than 16,000 surgical cases each year at Michigan Medicine's hospitals and outpatient surgery facilities, train future surgeons in more than 20 specialties, and advance care through a wide range of research and innovation.

Sarah Hawley, Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of internal medicine and research investigator with the VA Center for Clinical Management Research, was selected as the new IHPI Education and Training faculty lead, succeeding Caroline Richardson, M.D., professor of family medicine, who served in the role for more than three years.

Hawley will guide IHPI's Education and Training work group and its wide array of programs for faculty members and students. She will also join the IHPI Leadership Team as an ex officio member in this new role. Hawley is also the co-director of the Center for Health Communications Research and co-leader of the Health Behavior & Outcomes Program of the Rogel Cancer Center.

Scott Roberts, Ph.D., M.A., professor of Health Behavior and Health Education at the U-M School of Public Health, has been appointed co-chair of the Michigan Dementia Coalition (MDC). The MDC is a statewide group of more than 120 individuals from approximately 65 organizations that works to identify opportunities to improve quality of life for Michigan residents with dementia and their families.

The MDC has just released a comprehensive Roadmap for Creating a Dementia-Capable Michigan to guide policymaking and advocacy efforts around dementia in Michigan.

Amanda Kowalski, Ph.D., professor of economics, is the recipient of the 2019 American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon) Medal. The award is given to an economist age 40 or under who has made the most significant contributions to the field of health economics.

More research is required to understand the root causes of disparities in the use of preventive services, patient acceptance of preventive recommendations, and how barriers can be addressed through provider and community interventions. IHPI Director John Ayanian, M.D., M.P.P., and Tiffany Veinot, Ph.D., associate professor of information, recently spoke on this topic at an NIH Pathways to Prevention (P2P) Workshop on Achieving Health Equity in Preventive Services.

The workshop assessed the available scientific evidence on achieving health equity in the use of clinical preventive services in a health care setting, focusing on three leading causes of death in the United States: cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

These actions are the result of the work of IHPI member Mark Fendrick, M.D., and supporters to implement value based insurance design concepts into policy.

Clinicians, administrators, and policymakers should consider ways to support the mental health and well-being of older adults as they go through residential transitions, according to a U-M study that looked at deaths by suicide among people 55 and older. The study was led by Briana Mezuk, Ph.D., an associate professor of epidemiology.
