Payroll Reminder:
Classified employees who are required to fill out the Fair Labor Standards (FLS) form, please complete your documentation, have it signed by your supervisor and return it to payroll as soon as possible.

Earn $250 by referring a new bus driver:
Emporia Public Schools needs bus drivers for the 2019-20 school year. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who may be retired, prefers a flexible schedule, or who wants school days off. USD 253 employees can earn a $250 referral bonus when new bus drivers include the district employee's name on their employment application. The $250 referral bonus will arrive after the driver has been on the job for six months. Additionally, new drivers will receive a $250 bonus on their first paycheck and another $250 bonus once training and CDL endorsement are complete. Human Resource Reminders:
July 1
  • staff members resigning on July 1st shall pay the district $2000
  • any staff member resigning after July 1st shall pay an additional $50 per day until the written resignation is received in the central office
August 1
  • staff members resigning on or after August 1st shall pay the district $5000

Town Hall Meetings:
If you have questions regarding the bond issue please plan to join district administrators and architects from HTK at one of the upcoming bond information sessions:
  • Thursday, July 11th 6:00 pm at Emporia Middle School, Cafetorium
  • Tuesday, July 23rd 7:30 am at the Trusler Business Center
  • Wednesday, July 31 6:00 pm at Emporia High School, Library
Student Enrollment for 2019-20:
Online enrollment for the 2019-20 school year will begin on July 15th and run through July 28th. During this time, families will be able to enroll their student/s online by using the individualized code that will be mailed on July 13th. Anyone needing assistance is encouraged to stop by the Flint Hills Learning Center located at the Flinthills Mall where staff will be available at the following times:
  • Monday - Thursday, July 15-18 from 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, in-person or online
  • Monday - Thursday, July 22-25 from 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, in-person or online
  • Monday - Thursday, July 29-August 1 and August 5-8 from 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, in-person only
  • Beginning August 12th, enrollment must be completed at Mary Herbert Education Center, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, in-person by appointment
Save the Date:
Mark your calendars and make plans to attend the 2019-2020 Back-to-School Convocation and Breakfast, August 12, 2019, at 7:30 am, located at Emporia High School. This will be an exciting time that you won't want to miss including a professional keynote speaker, prizes, and lots of food.

Kindergarten Ramp-Up:
If you know of children who will be attending kindergarten this fall and they did not attend preschool, please encourage their parents to sign them up for kindergarten ramp-up. Kindergarten ramp-up will be held July 22-26, at Riverside, William Allen White, and Village. Two sessions will be offered: one from 10:00 am - 11:45 am and a second session from 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm.

Preschool Enrollment:
Preschool enrollment continues for Emporia Public Schools. Simply go online to www.usd253.org to print the application for 3 or 4-year-old students and return it to Maynard Early Childhood Center. Also, stop by Maynard at 19 Constitution to fill out an application from 9 - 5 Monday - Friday. Call 341-2260 if you have questions.

  • treasurer's report for May 2019
  • MOU between USD 253 and the Fifth Judicial District Community Corrections for the Spartan Explorers after school program
  • MOU between USD 253 and JAG-Kansas for the 2019-20 school year
  • disposal of district surplus via internet auctions
  • donation of $2,377.96 to Village Elementary from Village PTO to pay for transportation for student field trips
  • resolution to update authorizations to perform necessary transactions for funds deposited in the district's Kansas Municipal Investment Pool account 
  • accept the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant funds for Logan Avenue, Riverside, and William Allen White for 2019-20 with the district providing program funds for the three non-qualifying elementary schools
  • Master Contract for certified staff and the adjusted salary packages for all staff for 2019-20
Board Discussion:
Board members held a discussion on the election timeline for board officers. Members came to a general consensus that they will continue to elect board officers in July.

Board Presentation:
ESU TRIO Presentation
Kristi Bolen, Director of ESU TRIO programs, and Shanna Eggers, Director of the McNair Scholars Program, presented information regarding the TRIO programs that are offered to Emporia Public School students grades 6 -12. TRIO provides services to qualified students to help them be motivated for successful college completion. TRIO services grants are written for five years to meet the specific needs of students in the Emporia community. The board will be asked to approve an MOU between ESU TRIO programs and USD 253 at the July 10th board meeting.
