STERLING HEIGHTS VOTERS TO DETERMINE FUTURE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT

On Nov. 3, 2020, Sterling Heights voters will be presented with two proposed amendments to the City Charter. The 4 ballot proposal would amend the City Charter to provide for a 4-year term for the offices of Mayor and City Council beginning with the November 2021 city election. The City Charter currently provides for a 2-year term for these offices.

The 400 ballot proposal would decrease the number of registered voter signatures required on nominating petitions to 400 for the offices of Mayor and City Council through an amendment to the City Charter. The City Charter currently requires candidates to secure the signatures of 1% of the registered voters in Sterling Heights, which equates to roughly 900 signatures.

STATE OF THE CITY: THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC IN STERLING HEIGHTS

The virtual State of the City of Sterling Heights, led by Mayor Michael Taylor, featured three major topics: public health, economic impact of the pandemic, and racial justice and equity in Sterling Heights.

Important topics were explored more thoroughly than could be shared during the State of the City and merit a second look. Each of the panel discussions will be shared in full.

Watch the first installment here where community leaders engage in an in-depth discussion regarding the pandemic’s economic impact on our community.
COMMON CAUSES OF WATER LOSS
The City has recently heard from residents with questions about their water bill, and we’d like to share some helpful information we hope will answer those questions. Below are common sources that contribute to higher than average water bills. Flow rates and total consumption can vary from house to house. All billed water includes sewage charges as well.

Sterling Heights bills in Units, 1 Unit = 748 Gallons.

HALLOWEEN IN STERLING HEIGHTS

With Halloween fast approaching, many residents are wondering how to handle the holiday in the midst of a pandemic. While the city of Sterling Heights does not recommend door-to-door or car-to-car trick-or-treating events due to it being very difficult to maintain proper social distancing, if you do plan to participate in Halloween trick-or-treating this year, please be sure to follow public health guidelines for safety:

  • Wear a mask – the good news is, many costumes already incorporate a mask!
  • Don’t trick-or-treat in large groups that include members from other households.
  • Always remain 6’ apart from those outside of your household.
  • Rather than handing out candy from a communal candy bowl on your porch, consider spacing treats on your front porch or out on a table in your driveway with a sign that says “Take One and Yell Trick Or Treat!”
  • Wash your hands before you remove your mask or consume any candy.
  • Stay home if you are sick.

If you decide not to trick-or-treat or hand out candy in your neighborhood this year, you can still celebrate. Sterling Heights Parks & Recreation has many fun activities planned to celebrate this sPoOkY season with our community!

From a FREE straw maze pop-up at Dodge Park to drive-in movies of Halloween classics to family pumpkin carving parties, there is something for everyone to enjoy!
