Greetings from the Green River Dental Society

Yesterday was a very challenging day in our profession. As I consider the events that have taken place, I am just starting to process the significance of what is before us. Also, I am reminded that even small decisions that we face each day may define each of us and our profession. These are extraordinary times, to say the least.

The treatment recommendations that have been offered by our American Dental Association and our Kentucky Board of Dentistry are well outlined in earlier communications from the ADA and KDA and highlighted again, today, in a KDA Member News COVID-19 Guidelines & Information dated March 17, 2020. Please look for the email if you have not had time to review. On purpose, the recommendations from the Kentucky Board of Dentistry and the ADA allow for our individual professional judgement and interpretation for the care that we provide to our patients.

I am proud of our profession and the leadership that it has demonstrated to our Communities, Commonwealth, Country and beyond. We have been leaders in oral health and overall health. We proudly carry the message of how the mouth is the "Gateway" to overall health. I am proud of the outstanding dental education that has prepared me to provide dental care to my patients and my community. I know you feel the same. I see the same strength by way of the tremendously talented young dentists and dental students who will carry on the leadership of our profession now and into the future. I am exceedingly grateful for the numerous mentors and friends who have shaped my experiences and training to be a part of our wonderful profession.

I understand that the American Dental Association and the Kentucky Dental Association are behind each of us, as members, during this very difficult time and I am grateful. I am only starting to realize the depth and breadth of resources available to us through organized dentistry. In follow up messages, I will strive to be more detailed and highlight resources that come into focus that may meet a need and, hopefully, reduce stress.

Please understand I am, just like ALL of you, concerned for my patients, my practice, my team and my family. I certainly do not have all the answers. However, please realize that no matter how you choose to provide dentistry in the Commonwealth, the ADA and the KDA are here to support and serve. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!  The KDA welcomes your input and insight. We learn from each other and, together, we can endure this crisis.

I have learned from my experiences that it is most often by working together to overcome challenges that we grow closer and stronger as individuals and as family. I hope our KDA family grows closer and stronger as we weather this storm.

I recall a movie quote that has stuck with me..."I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?"

You are welcome to reach me anytime at  [email protected]  or 270-454-6275.

Respectfully,

Mark A. Moats, D.M.D., M.A.G.D., F.A.C.D.
