Fountain Hills Dark Sky Festival 04-21-2018

Everyone is invited to the Fountain Hills Dark Sky Festival on April 21st from 3:00 PM- 10:00 PM at the Fountain Hills Community Center. The festival is being held to celebrate and promote Fountain Hills as one of only 17 cities in the world to receive the International Dark Sky Community designation.

The festival is intended to provide things of interest to festival-goers of all ages.  Beginning at 4:00, there will be a series of nationally known speakers addressing topics such as the Cultural Astronomy of the Prehistoric Southwest, the Recent History of Pluto, and the Impact on Wildlife by Artificial Light at Night. There will also be a mobile planetarium, photo contest, art contest, food, craft beers, and a large star party with multiple telescopes aimed at solar flares, mountains on the Moon, double stars, and galaxies. There are many other educational aspects of the festival that I believe would be of great interest to our students, such as the live display of nocturnal animals, laser tours of the night sky, and crafts for kids at the library and River of Time Museum.

FHUSD students from kindergarten through 12th grade will all be participating in the art contest as part of the Dark Sky Festival. Students have produced work in all mediums using everything from crayon and marker to computers and ceramics. Students were only limited by their own imaginations and a paper size of 12 x 16 inches. Works include realistic depictions of our desert, fantastical representations of aliens and unknown worlds, and the exploration of the deepest, darkest parts of space. Our youngest artists from McDowell Mountain used the Studio Habits of Mind to create their own vision of a night sky. First, students observed various examples of night skies, including the one at their home. They then developed craft with watercolor paints, tempera cakes and/or crayon to envision their own sky background.  Finally, artists used various materials in the art studio to express what is in the middle ground and foreground.
