Top Ten Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips
Like many Americans, you may be planning to have a festive Fourth of July. Along with barbecues and day at the beach, no July holiday celebration would be complete without enjoying the fireworks that celebrate the birth of our nation.
Perhaps you are considering staying at home and planning a get-together with friends and family. Or, you may want to go check out your local professional fireworks display. While putting the finishing touches on your planned celebration, take a moment to consider your pets.
Unlike people, pets don't associate the noise, flashes, and burning smell of pyrotechnics with celebrations. Pets are terrified of fireworks, and often panic at the loud whizzes and bangs they produce.
Because of this, the American Humane Association reports that July 5 is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. Why? In a 2005 press release the
Indiana Proactive Animal Welfare, Inc. (PAW) stated that animal shelters the day after Fourth of July are "inundated with pets that panicked at the noise of firecrackers and fled into the night, winding up lost, injured or killed."
10. Keep your Pet Indoors at All Times!
It may seem obvious, but even if your pet is used to being outside, the resulting panic caused by fireworks or other loud noises may make them break their restraint or jump a fence in a terrified attempt to find safety.
9. Don't Put Insect
Repellent
on Your Pet that isn't Specifically for Pet Use
The same tip applies to applying "people" sunscreen on your pet. What isn't toxic to humans can be toxic to animals. The ASPCA lists the poisonous effects of sunscreen on your pet as, "...drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and
lethargy." DEET, a common
insecticide, may cause neurological issues.
8. Alcoholic Drinks Poison Pets
If your pet drinks
alcohol, they can become dangerously intoxicated, go into a coma, or in severe cases, die from respiratory failure. Yes, even beer is toxic; fermented hops and ethanol are poisonous to
dogs and
cats.
7. Going to a Fireworks Display? Leave Your Pet at Home
The safest place for your pet is at home, not in a crowded, unfamiliar and noisy place. The combination of too many people and loud fireworks will make your beloved pet freak out and desperately seek shelter. Locking them in the car is also not an option; your pet may suffer
brain damage and
heat stroke.
6. Have Your Pet Properly Identified
If your pet manages to break loose and become lost, without proper identification it will be that much harder to get them back. Consider fitting your pet with microchip identification, ID tags with their name and your phone number, or both. It is also a good idea to have a recent picture of your pets in case you have to put up signs.
5. Keep Your Pet Away from Glow Jewelry
It might look cute, but your pet could chew up and swallow the plastic adornments. The ASPCA states that while not highly toxic, "excessive drooling and
gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers."
4. NEVER Use Fireworks Around Pets
While lit fireworks can pose a danger to curious pets and potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws, even unused fireworks can be hazardous. Some fireworks contain potentially toxic substances such as arsenic, potassium nitrate, and other heavy metals.
3. Don't Give Your Pet "Table Food"
If you are having a backyard barbecue, you may be tempted to slip some snacks to your pet. But like
beer and
chocolate, there are other festive foods that could harm your pet. Onions, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and
yeast dough are all possible hazards for dogs and cats.
2. Lighter Fluid and Matches Are Harmful to Pets.
The ASPCA lists chlorates as a harmful chemical substance found in some matches that, if ingested, can cause your pet difficulty in breathing, damage blood cells or even cause kidney disease. If exposed to lighter fluid, your pet may sustain skin irritation on contact, respiratory problems if inhaled, and
gastric problems if ingested.
1. Citronella Insect Control Products Harm Pets, Too.
Oils, candles, insect coils and other citronella-based repellents are irritating toxins to pets, according to the ASPCA. The result of inhalation can cause severe respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, and ingestion can harm your pet's nervous system.
The safest and best bet for celebrating this Fourth of July with your pets is to exclude them from holiday festivities, at least this time around. Instead, find a safe, secure spot in the home for your pets while you go out and enjoy the loud bangs, bright lights and spectator fun. Your pets will appreciate the quiet a lot more than you'll enjoy the noise.

My name is Jorja. I am 8 years old and weigh 17 pounds. I need a new home because I don't care for the toddler and other dog that I live with. I am being fostered in Des Moines, IA.
Don't let my age fool you; I am a puppy at heart! I am a high energy dog that loves to play ball in the back yard.
I love to jump up and sleep on the couch or sit on someone's lap.
I like to be invited into bed, but prefer to sleep on top of the covers, close to your head.
I know how to sit, shake, and I LOVE to high five! If you tell me "I want to catch a fish" I will jump into your arms!
I love to play out in the yard and sit on your lap.
I have a squeak toy that I call  my "baby" I feel accomplished once all of the squeakers are dead. I will still love my baby and carry it around and bury it in the covers even though it no longer squeaks. I recently got a new baby and it still has some squeakers!
I need lots of play time to burn off my energy, and lots of love. I enjoy being the center of attention.
I would rather not be in a home small children or other dogs. I tend to pick and choose who I like and am not great at sharing my space.

We have now had Milo for just over two and half years, and he is doing great! It has been so wonderful watching his transformation from being shy and unsociable to the little love bug that he is now. He has been an incredibly fun addition to our small family.
Milo spends time in Southern California in the winter, and really enjoys walking on the beach. He misses his hikes in the Colorado Rockies, but loves the warmer climate here in the winter. Colorado is still home in the summer, so he does get plenty of time on his favorite trails. He is a happy healthy dog, and loves his toys and treats. He has a fantastic appetite, and is motivated by food. This has helped us train him and keep him on his best behavior. Milo is also an excellent traveler and loves to ride in the car. Q: How do I know if my dog has an ear infection? Is there a way to keep the ears clean to prevent infections?
A: Ear infections are painful and we need to identify the signs so we can respond in a timely manner
We have seen a large number of dogs with untreated ear infections. Ear infections should not be ignored, because:
- they are painful and discomforting
- they can lead to hearing loss and deafness
- they can result in broken blood vessels, deforming the flap
If you see your dog do any of the following, a vet check-up is recommended to eliminate a possible ear infection.
- pawing/scratching at the ear
- shaking the head
- rubbing the head along furniture or the ground
- odor coming from the ear
- inside ears are red
- crusties in the ear
*Note that dogs with allergies or those that have had an ear infection in the past are more pron to repeat ear infections.
Ear infections cannot be treated with just ear cleaner. Medication from your vet is required, and treatment may need to go as far as including a pain reliever.
To clean ears properly follow these steps. Remember you can always go to your vet or a groomers because if you are nervous, you dog will be too.
During warm months
when your dog spends a lot more time outside, monthly ear cleanings are recommended
. When your dog spends more time indoors during the cooler seasons, an ear cleaning every couple of months will do.
- Soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and squeeze excess liquid before placing in your dog's ear canal. Ear cleaners are NOT recommended as most people do not remove all the fluid resulting in ear infections.
- Massage the base of the ear for 15 seconds to soften and release the debris.
- Remove the wet dirty cotton ball.
- Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you see no more debris on the cotton ball.
- Place a dry cotton ball into the ear to collect any moisture.
- Cotton swabs/Q-tips can be used to clean the inside of the ear flap and the part of the ear canal you can see. They should NOT be used farther down in the ear canal since that tends to pack debris in the ear canal, rather than removing it.
After the ear is clean, let the dog shake his head and allow some time for the ears to dry. Then if you have ear medication that was prescribed, that can be applied.

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter

Have you noticed that you aren't seeing our Facebook posts very often? Well it's not just you! Due to changes in the way Facebook works, less and less of our posts are showing up on your timelines. If fact, less than 5% of you see our posts daily! And sadly, this means you are missing a lot of our amazing rescue stories and videos!
The good news is Facebook has created a way around this using new settings.
Read the instructions below, go to our Facebook page and update your settings on your desktop or mobile device so you won't miss a thing!
- Visit our FB page - https://www.facebook.com/MABTR/
- Make sure you have clicked the "LIKE" button on our page.
- Click the "Follow" button.
- Under the "Following" drop down menu, select "See First" in your news feed.
- Under the "Following" drop down menu, select "On" for notifications.
And last but not least, be sure to routinely "Like", "Share" and "Comment" on our page. If Facebook doesn't see that you are interacting with our posts, they will remove us from your Facebook Feed.
