21st Annual Smoke on the Water Chili Cook Off
This Saturday Bailey & Wyant, PLLC participated in the 21st Anunal Smoke on the Water Chili Cook Off, or as we are calling it
Chili Mania!
Four members of our team made their delicious chili recipes to share with the hundreds of chili enthusiasts on Saturday at Haddad River Front Park. While countless others came out to support the team!
Associate, Dan LeMasters has won first place for his award winning chili recipe for the past two years and this year Bailey & Wyant, PLLC took home the Law Firm's Peoples Choice Award! This topic is evolving as West Virginia sees emerging legislation on Medical Marijuana. In a special session on May 20th, the Legislature passed SB 1037 which removes restrictions on growers and processors that would have prevented them from serving as dispensaries as well.

Associate Conducts Workers' Compensation Training
Workers' compensation benefits are available to injured employees in every state and workers' compensation laws vastly differ state to state. Some major differences among states include: the types of injuries covered under each state's workers' compensation laws, how long temporary disability benefits are to be paid, the method in which permanent impairment benefits are calculated, and whether a claimant gets to choose his or her own treating physician. These differences can be confusing and often times overwhelming for claims adjusters.
For instance, a claims adjuster experienced in administering workers' compensation claims in Maryland and Pennsylvania may not know even where to begin in administering a comp claim in West Virginia. Workers' compensation laws in West Virginia are very specific to this state and adjusters are faced with the most important decisions in a claim often before there's opportunity to contact an attorney. That's why it's important to provide our claims adjusters with the necessary information and proper training before throwing them to the wolves, otherwise known as the West Virginia workers' comp system.
Bailey & Wyant, PLLC Associate Jeffrey M. Carder has made it his mission this year to educate claims adjusters on how to properly administer a workers' compensation claim in West Virginia. He has designed a 3-hour Workers' Compensation 101 Class in which he covers topics such as compensability, temporary total disability, medical treatment, permanent partial disability, vocational rehabilitation, and permanent total disability.
"Three hours is a long time, but I try to make it fun by engaging directly with the adjusters and swapping stories about our craziest comp claims. I can honestly say that every adjuster who attends my class leaves with the ability to properly administer a workers' compensation claim in West Virginia. Bailey & Wyant, PLLC Summer Associate Spotlight
A Huntington, WV native, our summer law clerk Lauren Mahaney jumped at the opportunity to work in our Charleston office and explore for the summer. Mahaney is in her third year at WVU College of Law and says she knew from her first day of work, that her experience at Bailey & Wyant, PLLC would be one of a kind. From attending a large number of depositions, hearings, and meetings, she has enjoyed all the assignments which have given her hands-on experience for the practice of law and all that entails.
"Not very many summer associates can say they went to prison twice in their first week of work," says Mahaney.
Through her work on discovery production, deposition preparation and deposition summaries, she has come to understand the kind of preparation that goes into the litigation process.
"The experience and the knowledge that I have gained this summer has been greater than I thought anyone could experience in one summer," says Mahaney. "I have very much enjoyed getting to know and work with everyone here and I am looking forward to spending my last three weeks doing the same."

Adam K. Strider
Adam K. Strider is an Associate in Bailey & Wyant, PLLC's Charleston, West Virginia office. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, magna cum laude, from Marshall University, and earned his J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law in 2014.
As a member of the Moot Court Board, Adam represented WVU Law at the 2014 Robert F. Wagner Labor & Employment Law Moot Court Competition in New York City. Upon graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk for the Hon. Christopher C. Wilkes in his native eastern panhandle.
Thereafter, he moved to the Charleston, West Virginia area, where he made his career as an employment attorney, management consultant, and lobbyist for approximately three years before joining Bailey & Wyant, PLLC in 2018. Adam is originally from Jefferson County, West Virginia, and now resides in South Charleston, West Virginia.
In April, Adam Strider won the Democratic primary for the Ward 8 seat on the South Charleston City Council.
