Principal's Message
Dear Families,

I've often heard people mention that if we didn't have such volatile weather in Minnesota we wouldn't have anything else to talk about. I'd argue that isn't the case, but it does seem to take up some portion of time with many of our conversations. One of the things I appreciate about my drive in to work and home from work is the time allowed for reflection or to listen to various types of radio stations. This morning on my way in I listened to the principal of Jackson County Central High School Larry Traetow on WCCO. He was being interviewed by Dave Lee on his morning show because this weekend JCC is postponing prom due to the weather. In all of his years in education he mentioned this has been one of the hardest springs to accomplish anything.

We know it's one thing to postpone an outdoor spring activity, but when an indoor event, like Prom gets postponed, I think we've crossed a new threshold. I hope everyone is somehow finding a way to patient and we all hope this weekend's impending storm is the last of the year.

With that in mind, we have our volunteer meeting scheduled for this Sunday at 4pm. Depending on which outlet or weather model you look at, by that time Sunday we might be clear of the storm, or not. So, we'll keep our eye on that but as of now it is scheduled. Please keep an eye for an email late Saturday or early Sunday if you were planning on attending.

I usually end my newsletter by mentioning something about a nice weekend for everyone. I hope you can find a way to enjoy what's coming and perhaps contrarian to some people's belief about Minnesota find something else to talk about, besides the weather!

VOLUNTEERS WANTED- JOIN US FOR AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING
The local Catholic United Financial Council is disbanding, and we have been given the opportunity to start a Catholic United Volunteer Team here at Loyola in its place.
Catholic United Financial, and the local council have a long history of supporting Loyola Catholic School. Over the past 30+ years they have generated thru their programs, grants, and gifts over
$450,000 that has directly benefited Loyola. Our students have also benefited by receiving over
$32,000 in post-high school scholarships.
To continue to receive many of these financial benefits, I am asking you as a parent to consider being involved. Our goal is to combine our current Home and School group with a Catholic United Financial Volunteer Team.
An informational meeting will be held on Sunday, April 15 at 4:00 PM at Loyola to discuss this opportunity.

7-12 GRADE YEARBOOK UPDATE
The 2017/18 7-12 grade yearbook is changing from a spring to a summer delivery. The result of a later delivery has benefits and drawbacks:
Benefits:
*We will have one book with the full academic year in it (no spring supplement to be delivered later). This is why most large schools opt for a summer/fall delivery.
*Our sales window has been extended to May 25 which should lead to an increase in sales. Click here to order online, click here for the printable order form.
*Our production deadline has been extended by two months, giving the few students doing the work extra time to get the photos they need and to polish their page designs.
*We have the option of getting signature pages before the end of the school year so students can share signatures and write messages to each other before the book arrives, and then use the self-adhering feature to stick the pages in the back of their book when they receive it.
Drawback:
* The delivery of the yearbooks will be sometime in July instead of May. We plan on mailing books to graduating seniors and those students moving away before the end of July. This cost will be absorbed by the yearbook sales. All students who ordered a book are welcome to arrange a time to pick their book up in July. More information on that to come.
If you have any questions, please contact Yearbook advisor Bridget Prehn- [email protected]

Parents of 10th and 11th graders: Please see this PDF for information regarding PSEO course information for the 2018-2019 school year. SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
NEW!
Bold Futures Camp Information
Bold Futures is free one-week young women's residential summer camp opportunity hosted at Minnesota State University, Mankato from  June 10 through June 15 this year. Bold Futures camp is designed for up to 50 young women in southern MN who are entering grades 10-12 in fall of 2018. The vision is to build awareness of the business and career opportunities in STEM for young women in southern Minnesota.  By the end of the camp, attendees will have experienced career and business opportunities in STEM that they may not have thought possible before.
On-campus students will engage hands-on STEM and business curriculum, complete career interest assessments with career counselors, eat in the state of the art and recently built campus dining hall, and stay overnight in double suites within the recently built Julia Sears residence halls. In the afternoons and evenings students will engage in a variety of off-campus experiences including but not limited to:
  • Learning onsite at Microsoft, the Minnesota Lynx headquarters, Taylor Corporation, and several other local STEM-related businesses
  • Kayaking and engaging in outdoor STEM programming with Bent River Outfitters
  • Engaging in a networking dinner and panel with women leaders of local and regional companies related to STEM, and other female role models from MNSU-Mankato and the community.
  • Rock climbing and team-building with the Adventure Education Program at MNSU-Mankato
Thanks to sponsorship from The Glen A. Taylor Foundation, this experience valued at $1,100 per camper will be offered free of charge to up to 50 students.  Click here for more information.

Grades 9-11:  There are many summer camp opportunities-a few are free, some are low cost, and some have a higher fee but offer scholarships.  I have a folder in my office for anyone who wants to look at the opportunities.  I will list a couple of my favorite here.

Grades 9-12:  Minnesota Business Venture.  Yes, even current seniors can attend this one. MBV is an excellent leadership camp that will help with financial literacy, exploring some career paths, and developing teamwork with other high school students from across the state. They have outstanding inspirational business leaders sharing wisdom also.  If you apply before April 15th, this camp is just $150 for a 6 day overnight camp, either at St. John's (July 22-27) or St. Cloud U. (July 8-13).  Jerrid Buhs and Colton Corcoran both attended in recent years and loved it.   www.bestprep.org/mbv   They have scholarships readily available.  Great Value!!  Excellent for the student who wants some leadership experience for their NHS and college applications.

Ages 14-18:  Scrubs Camp is a hands on experience to learn about the many careers in the healthcare field.  It is a 3 day camp that will be held in Mankato June 18-20 for $150.  Register SOON as this fills up fast. http://healthforceminnesota.org/students/scrubscamp_registration.html
Students may use this in place of one of their 3 job shadowing experiences as long as they attend the full 3 days.  There are some scholarships available for this camp.  Email Mrs. Arians if you are interested in scholarships.

Juniors: Camp College-free overnight camp at Bethany July 16-18.  Megan Hillisheim and Tatyana Beck both attended and loved it.  This camp will help you with college applications, financial aid, scholarships, and more. http://www.mn-acac.org/CAMP-COLLEGE
