As you surely know by now, the CFA Board of Directors has cancelled all shows between now and the end of May. This was done in an effort to protect the health of our many loyal cat fanciers due to the spread of the coronavirus. This was a difficult decision for the Board to make but the board felt it was necessary.
CFA’s Coronavirus Response Team, headed up by Kathy Calhoun, will meet in the coming week to discuss what assistance CFA can provide to clubs whose shows were cancelled and if the minimums required for end-of-season awards should be modified. That team will present motions to the entire board regarding these issues. As decisions are made we will share them with you via both CFA-News announcements as well as on the CFA website:
cfa.org/covid-news/. The Board will monitor the impact of the virus and make decisions on when shows can return to production.

I encourage each of you to take precautions to keep yourself healthy. Wash your hands often, don’t touch your face, avoid large gatherings, and follow the advice from those with pertinent medical knowledge.
People are asking about the Annual Meeting scheduled for June 19-20 in Spokane, Washington. As of today, the Annual is still on. We are doing due diligence and working with the hotel to mitigate our losses should we need to cancel and we are working with a New York attorney to determine our options should we either not be able to hold the meeting or if we do not get a quorum. We are incorporated in the state of New York and their laws govern us since our own CFA Constitution does not address what happens if we do not have a quorum or are not able to hold the Annual Meeting. In the meantime, each club should select a delegate to represent them at the Annual and submit the required notice to the Central Office. It can be handled online at:

Being Prepared
Central Office operations are continuing as usual with no change to hours of operation. The staff is continuing to work in the office as normal, however, we are prepared to accommodate working remotely if necessary.
The health and welfare of our staff is of utmost importance, however, we also want to continue providing our customers with uninterrupted and timely service.

Words are powerful.
Think about this for a minute: How do you describe yourself to others? As a breeder, exhibitor, cat owner? One of the strategic goals of the Marketing Committee is to improve and enhance the general opinion and knowledge of our pedigree cats. One of the ways we can do this is in the messaging and words we use to describe ourselves. I recently watched an AKC video on this topic, and I am going to steal some of their ideas, as they equate to the cat fancy as well.
The first message we need to portray is that we are “Preservation Breeders.” The numbers of cats we produce and the number of breeding cats in many of our breeds is far below what any scientist would consider as safe. Our numbers are far smaller than many species on the endangered list. Some of our breeds don’t have gene pools but have gene puddles! So we are not just breeders of cats, but we are preserving our breeds of cats, thus we are Preservation Breeders. In fact, in this AKC video he called for people who are breeding one breed to add another breed to help preserve that breed. Look at the average age of our breeders and how few there are that are taking their place. Losing one minority breed breeder has significant impact on the continuation of that breed. So start using the phrase “Preservation Breeder,” and see if you can add another breed into your breeding plans.
Another topic was that the dogs are “Purposefully Bred.” This is easier to equate to the dog breeds as they were created for hunting, as protectors, or as service animals. So this is a little bit of a stretch to equate to cats. But when you think of the personality, health, coat color/texture/length, and sizes of the cats, we are choosing to replicate the ideal model of that breed. We do that breeding with purpose, to ensure the type, health, and temperament of the resulting offspring. These are not random litters of cats as those running in the street or ending up in shelters. These kittens were Purposefully Bred, and that not only gives them value but also speaks to our actions as being valuable. We can predict the health, personality, coat color, and size. And we are dedicated to the welfare of these animals through our contracts, rescue organizations, breed councils, and being a responsible breeder.
Our pedigrees are not just names on a piece of paper; they are the family tree of our cats, their heritage. We are Preservationists who intentionally produce Purposefully Bred cats. Use these terms in your thoughts and words. Words are powerful!

Help! Someone Grab the First Aid Kit!
Where is it? Who was supposed to bring it? What should be in it?
Show Rule 9.06 – The show manager must provide a First Aid Kit which must include a box of latex and/or vinyl gloves. The show manager shall endeavor to provide an adequate industrial type First Aid Kit at the announcers stand, or when there is no central announcer, at the master clerks table.
Emergency numbers (ambulance service, police and fire) must be affixed to the top of the First Aid Kit.
When looking online or at a store, First Aid Kits come in many shapes and sizes with a variety of contents. They range in price from $2 to $300. It can be hard to know which one is the right one.
According to the United States Department of Labor, a First Aid Kit should include gauze pads (4x4 inches and 8x10 inches), a box of adhesive bandages, one package of gauze roller bandage (at least 2 inches wide), two triangular bandages, wound cleaning agent, scissors, blanket, adhesive tape, tweezers, gloves, resuscitation equipment, two elastic wraps, splint, and directions for requesting emergency assistance.
First Aid Kits should be evaluated for expiration dates and sound packaging regularly. Storing the needed items in a clean waterproof container can help organize and protect the supplies. This also provides ample space to affix emergency numbers.
Extra things that I have found to be helpful to include are first aid/CPR instructions, antibiotic ointment, water gel/burn dressing, non stick dressing pads (Telfa), instant ice packs, and hand sanitizer. The elastic wraps mentioned in the list can be either Coban or vet wrap type (single use) or ACE bandage (multi use). Wound cleanser can be liquid type (chlorhexidine) or sealed premoistened towelettes. The resuscitation equipment can be a simple pocket mask or face shield that can be purchased from the Red Cross (online for $3.99).
Some First Aid Kits include basic medications like aspirin or acetaminophen. When using these kits just be sure the medications are checked for expiration and allergies are confirmed prior to administration.
Keep in mind the First Aid Kit is just the first step in care, please seek professional medical attention when needed. The hope is no one will ever need to use a First Aid Kit, but it is good to know that at our CFA shows one is available and fully stocked for the judges, exhibitors, show personnel, and spectators.

Georgia Surety Bill, Minnesota Companion Animal Board Bill, and Palm Springs, CA Proposed Restrictive Breeder Permit Ordinance

Georgia
The Georgia Senate passed an amended Senate Bill 338 on March 10, 2020 which would require licensed pet animal breeders to pay a $7500 to $500,000 surety bond in addition to the license fee for a pet dealer license. The surety funds would be used to provide for the health and welfare of animals when the licensee is unable or unwilling to care for the animals or if the animals were impounded. A license shall be revoked without a hearing if the surety becomes insufficient. Although the original bill’s threshold had been 20 animals, the amendment returned it to the current statutory threshold for licensing as selling, adopting, exchanging, or offering to do the same for more than 30 cats or dogs (or other covered pets) in a twelve-month period. The statute as well as this bill authorize the Department of Agriculture Commissioner to reduce that threshold. The Commissioner has historically required anyone whose cat, dog, or other covered animal has more than one litter in a twelve-month period to be licensed. Thus, the one litter rule should still be in effect if S.B. 338 is enacted. The bill also increases the maximum license fee from $400 to $800.
Minnesota
Senate File 3481, similar to House File 3584, would transfer the licensing, enforcement, and inspection of companion animal kennels, dealers, and commercial breeders from the Board of Animal Health (BAH) to the newly created Companion Animal Board (CAB) if enacted. The BAH consists of two veterinarians and three livestock producers, whereas the CAB would have 13 members, only one of which would be a regulated companion animal breeder. Although the board has the authority to create an “advisory task force with a majority of members who have a working knowledge of companion health and welfare issues,” it is not a requirement. The CAB would be responsible for serving the public, state and local governments, and nonprofit animal welfare organizations. Its duties include providing public education on companion animal issues, providing expertise to government entities, assist with companion animal disaster relief services, and analyze and distribute information on data collected relating to companion animals in the state. Under Minnesota Statute 347.57 (5), a “commercial breeder” means a person who possesses or has an ownership interest in animals and is engaged in the business of breeding animals for sale or for exchange in return for consideration, and who possesses ten or more adult intact animals and whose animals produce more than five total litters of puppies or kittens per year.
Palm Springs, California
Mayor Pro Tem Christy Holstege has again proposed an ordinance that would make it virtually impossible for small in-home show breeders to pursue their hobby in the city. Calling it a “compromise” position from the proposed 2018 total ban on “backyard breeding” (February 27, 2020
council meeting ), this new proposal would still make it difficult for breeders to pursue their hobby in a meaningful way. The proposed breeding permit states the “breeding permit shall authorize no more than one (1) dog or cat litter per domestic household in any twelve (12) month period, or the offering of a male dog or cat for stud once in any twelve ( 12) month period.” Emphasis added. Under the administrative penalties section, however, it is a violation to allow an animal to be bred more than once in a twelve month period. There is a clear disconnect between the permit language and the penalty language as a single breeding, or even multiple breedings, may not yield a litter. Not only would this ordinance preclude viable breeding programs, but if someone owned both a male and a female and bred them together, they would violate the proposed ordinance. The annual permit fee would be $100. With existing laws and a population under 50,000, one wonders if this just a solution in search of a problem. For example, according to the council discussion at the February 27, 2020 council meeting, all breeders must have a business permit and are subject to inspection under current law. In addition, the city has a kennel ordinance applying to anyone with four or more cats or dogs at least four months of age, and an ordinance restricting the source of dogs and cats sold at pet stores. State law also limits the sources of cats and dogs sold in pet stores to so-called humane sources such as government-run shelters. And breeders in the state are subject to the 2007 California Board of Equalization policy requiring a seller’s permit to collect and remit sales tax for sellers of more than two pets or other nonfood animals during a twelve month period.

Winn Feline Foundation & the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Offer Two Scholarships for 2020: Winn Feline Foundation (Winn) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) are pleased to announce two scholarships for third- or fourth-year veterinary students enrolled in accredited veterinary colleges or schools in the United States or Canada. The $2,500 awards are based upon academic achievement, financial need, leadership, and dedication to and excellence in the study of feline medicine, health, and welfare.
he Boards of Directors of both the AAFP and Winn are thrilled to offer these scholarships to support future veterinarians and continue to advance feline medicine. These two leading feline-dedicated organizations are offering one $2,500 scholarship for a veterinary student with an interest in feline practice and the second $2,500 scholarship for a veterinary student with an interest in clinical scientific research.
All applications will be reviewed, selected, and approved by the AAFP and Winn. In addition to a short application form, interested students will also be required to answer two essay questions asking for the applicant to explain his/her specific interest and background in feline health and welfare, and to describe plans for future participation in feline medicine.
All completed applications with accompanying supplementary documents must be received no later than March 20, 2020. The winning recipient will be notified of their award on or before April 15, 2020.

Need more time to file your federal income tax return? Whether you need an extension of time to file because of changes to tax law, the COVID-19 pandemic, or other circumstances, the extension to file is automatic if you follow the rules. Here are some things you need to know when you take the automatic extension to file:
- Your request for an extension must be filed (or postmarked) by the due date of your return, April 15. You will then have six months to file your return and not be subject to the late-filing penalty. You don’t even need to tell the IRS the reason for the extension.
- With the automatic extension you will have until October 15, 2020 to file your federal return.
- Your tax preparer may make the request for an extension on your behalf.
- The extension to file does NOT extend your time for payment of any taxes due. If you expect to owe money with your return you should make a good faith payment with your extension request to avoid additional interest and penalties.
- Some taxpayers automatically receive extensions to file their return. This may include citizens living overseas, military personnel serving overseas, or taxpayers affected by designated natural disasters. (As of this writing there has NOT been a national extension to file due to COVID-19 but this may change.) If one of these situations applies to you please visit the IRS web site for the applicable rules.
- If you are required to file a state income tax return you must also request an extension from any state in which a return would be due. State rules for requesting an extension to file vary.

Region 1 had three very successful shows in February. Two were traditional very well known shows in our region. We also saw the return of the Empire Cat Club with a show on the last weekend of February.
Black Diamond and Ramapo, always a well attended and excellently run show. (pictures) Competition was phenomenal in all classes.

National Norwegian Forest Cats, this year featured the Tonkinese. Well attended by both the Wegies and the Tonks. The Tonkinese had 22 entries and a breed summit on Saturday. The Wegies featured 11 NFC from as far away as Nova Scotia and California. (Pictures)

Empire Cat Club returned this year, utilizing an available 5
th weekend. They held the show in a store front on the main street of Hammonton NJ. What a spectator gate they had! The rosettes were designed by Mary K featuring a Star Wars Theme.

Region 2 is very excited to host this year’s CFA Annual in Spokane, WA. Spokane is located in the Northeast corner of the state. We haven’t had a cat show there for many years. It is a beautiful city and the locale for the Annual is very lovely. I think you will enjoy the experience.
Lori and Janet Hollister were asked to produce the delegate bags. They decided to order the bags in five different colors then added the decorations. The girls picked out a fabric that has eight different “cat” positions. The illustrations were cut out and fused to the individual bags. There will be a variety of bags filled with goodies and interesting things this year! It has taken them a full year and the bags are ready to go. If you wish to help with the stuffing, the activity will take place at 2 pm on Wednesday, June 17th at the Davenport Grand Hotel. Lori and Janet are known throughout our region for the many beautiful hand-crafted items that they have created.

As many of you know, the Tails and No Tails club had to cancel their show this year. The San Jose Fairgrounds cancelled all events at the last moment. Since this was the second show to be canceled in No Cal, the exhibitors are devastated.

Southern hospitality was at a high. This show is known for their homemade food and they did not disappoint anyone. The food was incredible. Chicken and turkey sausage gumbo or baked potatoes were served Saturday and on Sunday beef chili or baked potatoes was served. Homemade apple dumplings were also available both days.
The Raffle was a big hit with plenty of items to bid on Saturday and Sunday. The rescue group, Adopt Me Meow, adopted out 4 cats. There were also plenty of New Grands at the show.
The competition was fierce, especially in the Championship class. 79 cats in Championship and just 1 shy of top 15.

Show Report
The Genesee Cat Fanciers hosted their 68th annual show on Saturday and Sunday March 7 & 8 in Brockport, NY. To say this show exceeded expectations would be an understatement. Entries, official count, and exhibitors increased of 2019. But what was more exciting was that our gate increased 20% over 2019; and more than doubled over years before that! We also had an increase in vendors, with new features including a TNR/Rescue group and a local winery (yes, they had sample tastings available!) A local news station even visited our show on Sunday morning.
Many people asked over the weekend, “What did we do differently this year?” Our advertising expense was the same. However, we took many of the suggestions the marketing committee and Mike Altschul have given such as pre-sale tickets, increasing our admission fee and just making sure we had the right level of interaction on our Facebook event.
As all show producing clubs know, it takes a village to pull these off, and Genesee has the right village amongst members, family and friends, and other volunteers to make all we do possible. Our selection of judges entertained our guests with presentation and explanation of the cats they were handling. We have a great group that can still take time to explain each of the breeds but continue their “jobs” efficiently.
Genesee also welcomed Laura Gregory for her second training session! There were several grands at this show as well, we congratulate all the exhibitors on their accomplishments through the weekend and wish them luck in this last month and a half of the season.

Well, this newsletter will be a lot different from the last ones, to say the least.
Due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, all shows are canceled for the foreseeable future. For those of us that the fancy has been such a large part of our lives, there is a feeling of loss.
I started when I was 15 showing my cat, Clown. It wasn't until 1978 that I started back again. So, for the better part of 42 years, my life has revolved around cats and cat shows.
This is the first time I am not able to travel to a cat show, and I feel a big loss! I am sure many of us feel the same way about a hobby that has been a major part of our lives.
This is not CFA's fault, it is not the board members fault, it is lack of preparedness to handle the problem.
The anger is real and the feeling of the loss of our hobby is real.
In the history of the United States, and the world, we have faced problems before, and we eventually will get through this crisis.
It may be time to rethink the way we handle our Annual meeting, bring in the technology we have available to us. Instead of renting great venues, we all sit at home and conduct our meetings and only get together to celebrate the awards. That would save lots of money and limit the exposure to anything threatening to wipe out our population.
We could have the award banquet but the cost would be greatly reduced.
As a hobby we need to stick together and support each other as we go through the withdrawals of not showing our cats, seeing our friends, and celebrating the hobby we love.
So I am angry and deeply saddened by all of this that is happening to our country, and our world.
However we can come out of this a stronger and better hobby.
I did hear that Dr. Pedersen from UC Davis fame who worked on the F.I.P. problem for years has joined the fight against this Corona virus. If that is true, we have someone who really knows about it working on a way to eradicate this virus.
I hope everyone stays healthy and safe out there. Follow the CDC recommendations to protect yourself from the COVID-19 virus so that we can soon regather and celebrate our hobby! I expect to see everyone at the next shows we are able to have.

So much going on – four Midwest Region shows cancelled. It’s a fluid situation.

Burmese breeders with their highest scoring Cats, Kittens, and Cats in Premiership
After a hiatus of many years, Carolina Sophisticats returned to the Carolinas. The area has been rather depleted of shows over the last decade. Several fanciers, many new to the fancy and/or the area, took an interest in reviving a club in the area. The National Alliance of Burmese Breeders also had several members in the surrounding area, and agreed to assist the new club with forming a joint show.

Atlanta Phoenix

Atlanta Phoenix has found a new home and a new date. Exhibitors loved the new showhall in Marietta. We had an increase in entries this year. Huge thanks to Mike Altschul's expertise and many hours spent on Facebook promotions which resulted in an amazing amount of spectators, many of which had never been to a cat show before. Exhibitors seemed to be having a great time with many celebrations and parties down the rows. Our vendors were happy and all requested to return again next year. We also had some rescue kitties adopted as well.

Fundraising
Jacqui Bennett, regional fundraising chair, has been busy getting fundraising efforts going. In January, she began organizing clubs to hold a different sort of raffle. It's a variation of the traditional 50/50 raffle, and based on "all cats entered" (ACE). Exhibitors are first given the opportunity to purchase their on their own cats' numbers, then the raffle is opened up so that exhibitors can purchase ANY cat's number. Now, how bad would it be to have someone else win a split of the pot on YOUR number? You win, the region wins, and we all have fun! Proceeds from this effort will support regional events, such as our awards banquet. Many thanks to Claire Dubit and Lyn Knight for donating their winnings to the region, and to Hope Gonano for the idea for this inventive raffle!
Next up – Jacqui is creating a special
“Go Fund Me” aimed specifically at our region’s affected clubs and ancillary personnel (show services, photographers, etc) who will take a financial hit with the suspension of all CFA shows through the end of May.

We will be missing seeing all the members of our CFA family while we remain “off the road.” Let’s all remain positive during this unexpected break, take advantage of the extra time to give our cats a bit more attention, and come back even stronger.

10th Anniversary Show - Catsburg 2020
|
This show was questioned till Thursday before it started. As every were in the world the corona virus had his influence on this event. Finally the great team of organizers could get the show go. Once again this show gave us the impression of the - Greatest Cat Show in the World.
In 2020 the five different organizations working together celebrated the shows 10th anniversary.

Elena Kalinina and her Chatte Noir team did a great job in presenting CFA in Russia. With a count of 157 cats, once again a big show in region 9 Europe.

The CFA International Division awards banquet is tentatively scheduled for August 15, 2020. The location will be disclosed when plans are finalized. Don’t forget the CFA Asia World show in Kuala Lumpur the weekend of August 29-30. This show will have up to top 5 breed awards like the CFA International show. We invite exhibitors from the International Division and Regions 1-9 to attend. August 31 marks the day the Federation of Malaysia gained its independence and there will public celebrations and fireworks!
