EASTER WEEK

Like the period that is celebrated after Christmas, we celebrate Easter for roughly 7 weeks, or 50 days. Eastertide is the period of fifty days from
Easter
Sunday to
Pentecost
Sunday. It is celebrated as a single joyful feast, indeed as the "great Lord's Day". Each Sunday of the season is treated as a Sunday of Easter, and, after the Sunday of the
Resurrection
, they are named Second Sunday of Easter, Third Sunday of Easter, etc. up to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while the whole fifty-day period concludes with Pentecost Sunday. There is a lot to rejoice about during this time as we hear the stories from the Apostles and learn about the growth of the Christian faith.
When the
Anglican
and Lutheran churches implemented their own calendar and lectionary reforms in 1976, they adopted the same shortened definition of the Easter season as the Roman Catholic Church had promulgated six years earlier. In the
Church of England
, the Easter season begins with the
Easter Vigil
and ends after
Evening Prayer
(or
Night Prayer
) on the Day of Pentecost. Some Anglican
provinces
continue to label the Sundays between Easter and the Ascension "Sundays After Easter" rather than "Sundays of Easter"; others, such as the
Church of England
and
ECUSA
, use the term "Sundays of Easter".
In the Liturgy we bring back the Alleluias, and the joyous Gloria; saying confession corporately after the Prayers of the People is omitted until after Pentecost. The Eucharistic colors in the robes worn by the ministers and the paraments on the altar and lectern are white and coronation. The color white represents "joy" and celebration.
We invite all to stand during the Eucharistic Prayers as we celebrate Christ's resurrection and ascension, even though people may still sit and kneel as they desire. It is no longer a "penitential" time, even though reconciliation and forgiveness will always be a big part of fellowship and worship in all Christian churches.
In the first century, these were times of both great joy and severe despair as Christians (or people of the "Way") celebrated the truth about Jesus resurrection and tried to avoid the persecution from the Romans and those Jews (not all Jews) who would seek out Christ's followers to try and destroy the truth.
Jesus lives! thy terrors now can, O death, no more appal us; Jesus lives! by this we know thou, O grave, canst not enthral us. Alleluia.
Jesus lives! henceforth is death but the gate of life immortal: this shall calm our trembling breath, when we pass its gloomy portal. Alleluia.
Jesus lives! for us he died; then, alone to Jesus living, pure in heart may we abide, glory to our Saviour giving. Alleluia.
Jesus lives! our hearts know well naught from us his love shall sever; life nor death nor powers of hell tear us from his keeping ever. Alleluia.
Jesus lives! to him the throne over all the world is given: may we go where he is gone, rest and reign with him in heaven. Alleluia.

BOOK CLUB

"The Great Alone"
by Kristin Hanna.
The Great Alone tells the story of The Allbright Family. Ernt Allbright was an Army Veteran in the Vietnam War. The war changed who he was. He struggled to keep a job. He began having bouts of paranoia and aggression. He became an alcoholic, and he could no longer keep a job. When a friend leaves him a cabin in the wilderness of Alaska, Ernt makes the decision to move his family there, where they will live off the grid.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING

BISHOP FIELD TO VISIT WITH VESTRY APR. 18 
6:30 pm at the Church
Bishop Martin Field will visit with the Vestry and parish ministry leaders at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, April 18. This is part of the Bishop's annual visitations with churches in the Diocese. On alternating years the Bishop leads the congregation in Sunday worship and visits with parishioners. Other years he discusses church life with leadership on a weekday.
