More accurate estimates of dairy cattle methane emissions developed
If current and future mitigation efforts are to be analyzed for effectiveness, regulatory agencies must have accurate data for existing enteric methane levels.
Leading the worldwide effort to get a better handle on methane emissions from animals, an international consortium of researchers devised more accurate models to estimate the amount of the potent greenhouse gas produced by dairy cattle, according to an announcement from The Pennsylvania State University.
The announcement follows a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine that calls for better methods for measuring and monitoring methane from human activities.

USDA won't regulate genome editing
Under its biotechnology regulations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not regulate or have any plans to regulate plants that could otherwise have been developed through traditional breeding techniques, as long as they are not plant pests or were developed using plant pests. In a statement, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said USDA will not offer regulatory oversight through innovative new breeding techniques, which include genome editing.
Plant breeders are increasingly using these new techniques to produce new plant varieties that are indistinguishable from those developed through traditional breeding methods. The newest of these methods, such as genome editing, expand traditional plant breeding tools because they can introduce new plant traits more quickly and precisely, potentially saving years or even decades in bringing needed new varieties to farmers.

Conference to focus on improving milk composition
A team of researchers from Washington State University and the University of Idaho received a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture & Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program to organize a national conference on the compositions of bovine and human milk.
Made up of experts in human nutrition, dairy science and lactation at both schools, the team will organize and lead the Conference on Dairy Foods: Management, Production, Bioactive Compounds to Enhance Health in November 2018 in Washington, D.C.

News and Updates for the 2018 Annual Meeting
Online registration for the 2018 ADSA Annual Meeting is open. For registration and current meeting information visit https://www.adsa.org/2018.
Register now for the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA®), the most comprehensive dairy science meeting in the world. As a global forum for professionals, educators, and students, the meeting will attract more than 1,900 dairy foods and production specialists with common but diverse interests in the future of dairy science. Instructors take note of the special opportunities.
Teaching Workshop:
"How to Implement and Evaluate Active Learning Activities in Your Classroom" will take place the afternoon of Sunday, June 24, and space is limited. This will be followed by a teaching symposium on Monday, June 25.
During this workshop, attendees will learn active learning activities that they will be able to implement in their classrooms this fall.
A preworkshop survey will be conducted to help us understand the needs and interests of participants. The survey will be available a few weeks before the meeting. Participants will be invited to bring a syllabus of their course for use during the breakout sessions.
Facilitators for the workshop include Michel Wattiaux (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Elizabeth Karcher (Purdue University), and Mark Russell (Purdue University).
The Teaching/Undergraduate and Graduate Education Symposium, "Active Learning: From Theory to Practice", will take place on the afternoon of Monday, June 25.
There is a need to address teaching methods that are effective in helping students gain knowledge, skills, and experiences that are the foundation of an undergraduate major in dairy sciences. This symposium will provide background theory related to active learning and examples of active learning practices, drawing on experiences of innovative instructors who have implemented such practices under a variety of educational settings of a typical undergraduate program.
The ADSA Annual Meeting will be held at the Knoxville Convention Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Hotel room blocks have been secured at discounted rates for attendees at nearby hotels. You can book your room online now at
https://www.adsa.org/2018/hotel. There is much to do in and around Knoxville, such as visiting the Great Smoky Mountains, checking out Civil War sites, exploring the University of Tennessee campus, and so much more!
