I Love America Tonight
VHUMC is honored once again to sponsor the kid's area of I Love American Night tonight, June 27, 6:00-10:00 pm. Since Wald Park is under construction, the event will be held at Vestavia Hills High School. There will be inflatables, corn hole, and popcorn during the movie (which plays at dusk). Please join Vestavia Methodist, the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation, and the entire community for this wonderful night. Thank you again for the excellent opportunity to be Christ's hands and feet into our community as we invite people into our church family.
Three On A String Sunday
The popular Birmingham-based ensemble Three on a String is celebrating their 48th anniversary with lively back to back performances here at Vestavia Methodist. Each service will feature the delightful mix of folk, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, and country music with a generous helping of humor for which the group is so well known.

Join us in worship next Sunday, July 7, as Three On A String leads us at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services in our brand-new Tyson Hall. You won't want to miss this exciting Sunday in the life of our church.
Holiday Closure Next Week
In celebration of Independence Day, the church offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 next week. We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday with your family.
Help Us Finish Strong
As a congregation, you have helped us make a tremendous recovery in your financial giving this fiscal year. We had several below-budget months last fall and were $276,312 below our income budget at the end of January. We sounded the alarm and you have responded very well and very generously. We are happy to report that at the end of May, we are only $16,780 below our income budget! Thank you.

Our fiscal year ends on June 30 and summer tends to be a time when donations drop. If you can, please help us finish this year strong. We may even meet our giving budget for the year. Your giving keeps our worship services, facilities, programs, and mission efforts going.
Serving Others in Tanzania
This Sunday, our own church members along with members from Trinity UMC will be blessed at our 11:00 Traditional Service as they leave on July 1 for Tanzania. This team has been preparing for this trip for the last year. They will be working alongside our missionaries, Liz and Eric Soard while they are there.

Please join our entire church family as we cover them in prayer for a week-long mission trip sharing God's love in Africa. They will be the hands and feet of Christ as they begin to build a church that we help support, share women's health issues, and teach the children about God. Many prayers for safe travels, God's love and open hearts for our friends they will encounter while there.
Reunited and It Feels So Good
Last summer the construction gave us the opportunity to combine some Sunday services. We had such good feedback that this year we have decided to worship together once again. Throughout the month of July the 8:30 and 11:00 traditional services will be reuniting with the services in Tyson Hall. The 9:45 service will still remain in the Sanctuary. To kick off this move we will be hosting our annual Independence Day concert on July 7 as we bring back Three On A String to perform in the 8:30 and 11:00 am services.

Here is the breakdown of how each week's worship style:
  • July 7 - Three on a String
  • July 14 - Traditional
  • July 21 - Contemporary
  • July 28 - Blended
On August 4, everything should be back to the original worship spaces, with the Discovery Weekend service in the Sanctuary at 9:45 am. So, join everybody for worship during the rest of summer!
Joint Sunday School Lesson
Please join us on Sunday, July 7, at 9:45 am, in the Fellowship Hall for a joint Sunday School lesson from Gideons International. Come listen as they share inspirational stories of their work in the U.S. and abroad to make the Word of God available to everyone and work with the local church to reach souls for Christ.
Boomers and Beyond Sock Hop
Find your poodle skirt or some Brylcreem and come have a great evening of dancing, food, and movie clips as we go back in time to the fabulous 1950's. The Sock Hop will be July 18, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, in the Fellowship Hall. The cost is $10/person, which will include your meal of hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, and make your own sundae bar. You can invite your friends and we won't be checking IDs at the door. Everyone will need to make a reservation by July 8. For more information, contact Jim Frazier ([email protected] / 769-0126).
Livestream is Coming Soon
Livestreaming is finally coming to VHUMC! For a few years, we have been wanting the ability to broadcast our worship services over the internet. To broadcast, we knew that we would need better cameras, a better mixing console, and the magic computer that reduces trillions of bits of data into a stream that can go out over any internet cable. And, all of that costs money.

Now, with the great help of an anonymous donor, we have the funds that we need to get the necessary equipment and licenses. We are very grateful and plan to have everything installed and running in the next few months. Of course, we will also need video operators. If you would be interested in this great technology, please contact Nash Osborne ([email protected] / 769-0117).

Look for more information on how to watch our livestream broadcasts coming soon. We are very excited about how this new feature will help you in your spiritual journey.
Goat Yoga
Come and join us on Wednesday, July 24, for Goat Yoga on the farm! The cost is $20 for a one-hour Yoga class, a classy ride in the church van, and fun with friends and baby goats. You can bring your own mat, borrow one from the Lighthouse, or rent one at the farm for an additional fee ($3). Make your reservation early because events fill up fast! Ages 12-112.

We will meet in the Lighthouse Lobby at 5:15 pm and take the church van to a farm in Helena for the Yoga class with a certified instructor and baby goats.

Volunteers Needed
Are you an early bird? Do you like getting the worm? The Health, Wellness, & Recreation Ministry is looking for people like you! We are in need of early morning volunteers to work the Lighthouse desk. Shifts are from 6:30-8:00 am or 7:00-8:00 am, Monday through Friday. We have weekly, bi-weekly and monthly opportunities available. You will receive a special name tag, a free Lighthouse membership, and get to hang out with some really cool people. Please contact Alli McGill ([email protected]) or Kealee Burrow ([email protected]) to volunteer.
A Special Thank You from Wesley Camp
One of our own members, Kay Davis, has a very close relationship with Wesley Camp. She wants to give a special thank you for all the efforts of our Vacation Bible Camp children to raise money for Wesley Camp! She also said the Latvian friends that she's told are very excited and so appreciative. They say "Paldies" (thank you in Latvian).
Upward Flag Football and Cheer Registration
Upward Flag Football and Cheer registration has begun! This league is for boys and girls K4-4th Grade who want to play flag football or cheer and learn the basics of the sports experienced in a Christ-centered atmosphere. Practices will be once a week on either a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday evening starting the week of Sept. 2. Games will be on Saturday mornings starting on September 14. The cost is $105 per participant and includes uniforms. The league also offers multi-child family discounts.

You can register online at the link below or in person at the VHUMC Lighthouse. We are looking forward to seeing your family participate with us this fall! For any questions about the league or season, please contact Miles Erbe ([email protected] / 769-0134).

Mission Minutes
Many of our members are still amazed when they discover all the mission efforts and organizations that we sponsor or support. Look for our new "Mission Minutes" in the Notes over the next year where we will highlight a mission partner/project every couple of weeks. Maybe you will even find a new way to get plugged in at VHUMC. During this "minute" we will also mention any needs that our partners might have that Sunday School classes or individuals could help with as they feel called.

This is great way to learn more about what VHUMC is doing to continue being the hands and feet of Christ and where God is calling us to continue to serve both locally and around the world.
VHUMC Marriage Night
Join thousands of couples in churches around the country on Friday, August 16, for a one-night marriage enrichment experience. Come enjoy a night to laugh and learn with your spouse/significant other as you hear from marriage experts and discover how to honor God in your marriage. The cost is $20 per couple and includes dinner. Childcare is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact Suzanne Scott-Trammell with any questions ([email protected] or 250-769-0136).

Hats for Sale to Support Missions
Looking for that perfect cap for the summer? Well look no further. The mission's office has the best looking cap around for sale. A portion of the proceeds will help support Rise Against Hunger 2020. This cap will be perfect for that golf game, mission trip, hiking adventure, or beach escape. If you are interested in supporting a good cause and getting a great hat at the same time, then contact Rachael ([email protected] / 205-769-0143). Don't wait, these will not last long.
Traveling Light
Weary travelers. You've seen them - everything they own crammed into their luggage. Staggering through terminals and hotel lobbies with overstuffed suitcases, trunks, duffels, and backpacks. Backs ache. Feet burn. Eyelids droop. We've all seen people like that. At times, we are people like that - if not with our physical luggage, then at least with our spiritual load. We all lug loads we were never intended to carry. Fear. Worry. Discontent. No wonder we get so weary. We're worn out from carrying that excess baggage. Wouldn't it be nice to lose some of those bags?

That's the invitation of Max Lucado. With the Twenty-third Psalm as our guide, let's release some of the burdens we were never intended to bear. Using these verses as a guide, Max Lucado walks us through a helpful inventory of our burdens. May God use this Psalm to remind you to release the burdens you were never meant to bear.

Ongoing Outreach
Food Pantry
Food pantry families were interviewed by the food bank a few months ago and the results show us how important our food pantry is to these families. 72% of the families would run out of food by the end of a month if it weren't for the food pantry. Click the link to understand more of how we help our families. Thank you for your continued support of this mission.

Oak Mountain Mission
Oak Mountain Mission needs furniture, especially tables and chairs. Please call Roddy (685-5757) to arrange for a pick-up. They are always in need of cookware, dishes and linens. These may be put into the three bins around the church. They especially help families who have lost their homes to fires, floods, and foreclosures. Please help the mission help them. Thank you.
