Microsoft Receives Chancellor's Award

The Virginia Community College System and Chancellor Glenn DuBois presented Microsoft represented by Anthony Putorek, Senior Lead Workforce Development Program Manager, of Boydton, Virginia, with the 14th Annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Microsoft was nominated for the award by Southside Virginia Community College.

Students Earn State Awards
SVCC Administrative Support Technology students, Janet Wilson of Farmville (right) and Kimberly Solomon (left) of South Hill, recently attended the FBLA-Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference in Glen Allen and competed against students from two- and four-year colleges across the state. 
Wilson placed first in Computer Applications. Solomon placed first in Administrative Technology and third in Business Communications. 

Three Southside Virginia Community College students were recently named to the 2019 Phi Theta Kappa All-USA All-Virginia Academic Team. Members included Juanita Kincy, Randi Lee and Ashley Parham. Pictured are Dr. Al Roberts (left) and Dr. Glenn DuBois (right), Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, congratulating Randi Lee during a April 17th luncheon in Richmond. 
Cypress Creek Renewables Establishes STEM Education Scholarship
Parker Sloan of Cypress Creek Renewables recently presented a check to the Southside Virginia Community College Foundation to establish a scholarship earmarked for recent graduates of Park View and Bluestone High Schools who are enrolled in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program of study at SVCC. Mr. Sloan (middle) is shown presenting a check to Dr. Chad Patton (left), Dean of Career and Occupational Technology and Dr. Keith Harkins, Vice President of Workforce Development. Cypress Creek Renewables is an integrated solar company that develops, finances, builds and operates solar projects.
Verghese Award Presented
Phyllis Konrath, a resident of Blackstone, VA is the recipient of the K. George Verghese Memorial Academic Merit Award. This award recognizes her academic achievements. Dr. Verghese was a long time faculty member at SVCC and was instrumental in the establishment of the nursing Programs. Phyllis (left) is shown with Patricia Archer (right), Associate Professor of Nursing.
Spring Concert Held
Springtime in Paris was the title of Southside Virginia Community College Chorus' spring concert held on April 28 at the South Hill Presbyterian Church.  Performed before a packed crowd, the concert featured Winifred Garrett, a harpist from Durham, NC. Other instrumentalist included Dee Pinnell and Laurel Sciortino, flutists, and Sally Tharrington, pianist. The chorus is under the direction of Carol Henderson. 
Recent Truck Driver Training Graduates Achieve Perfect Scores
Tom Jones and Juan Garcia recently graduated from SVCC's Truck Driver Training School with perfect scores. In the history of the program, 2,755 students have enrolled and 145 have graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Tom and Juan are being congratulated by Duncan Quicke (far left), program coordinator.
