Rector's Ramblings

This week the Christian blogosphere and news cycle was filled with news of the how different Evangelicals can be when it comes to news from our southern border. Russell Moore, who is the chief ethicist for the Southern Baptist Convention, an evangelical's evangelical, was ridiculed by Jerry Falwell, Jr., who now runs his father's Liberty University. Here's what transpired on Twitter. Note, I saw this in the news, not on Twitter. I only use Twitter when I'm at General Convention!

Russell Moore tweeted the following earlier this week:
" The reports of the conditions for migrant children at the border should shock all of our consciences. Those created in the image of God should be treated with dignity and compassion, especially those seeking refuge from violence back home. We can do better than this."

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Class is continuing to meet over the summer. The current study of, God Was Here and I Was Out to Lunch will end on July 14. Then the class will take a break on Sunday, June 30 and Sunday, July 7. On July 21, the group will begin a study entitled Pray Like Jesus which will run through August 28. There will be another break for Labor Day Weekend, September 1, then on September 8, the class will begin a study entitled The Gospel According to Leviticus. Read more about these books here. For more information, please contact Bob Brown at [email protected].
Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am . For the month of June, they are meeting at Gordon Zeese's home, at 1 Tee Lane, on St. Simons Island. They are engaged in a discussion of American Nations: A History of the 11 Rival Regional Cultures of North America, by Colin Woodard, at the beginning of the month.  The group will continue to meet during the summer and newcomers are always welcome.  For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .

Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. They are currently reading, Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor. The book is  "...a beautifully crafted memoir . . . . There is a refreshing honesty . . . a slice of courage in a world that too often refuses to admit its vulnerability. . . . Leaving Church does not bash the church. It is a love story about letting go and learning to live with the mystery of what may happen next." -  San Diego Tribune

Icon Writing Workshop - August 26-30
The fourth annual icon writing workshop will be held August 26-30 in the Christ Church parish hall. The instructor this year is Kara Nelson. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon, a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. The group will work from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, but you may work more or less as your eyes, body and soul are so inclined. Each day will begin with a brief worship and Eucharist filled with instruction about icons. The cost is $375. No previous experience is needed and all materials will be furnished. Just bring a lunch and a willingness to learn. Contact: Mtr. Becky at [email protected] .

Moravian Stars
Gabrielle holds one of the first stars she made as a child.
New to the Christ Church Gift Shop this week are Moravian stars, created by island newcomer, Gabrielle  Hedsieck. The handmade stars are available in three sizes and assorted colors.

Gabrielle learned the art of Moravian star-making, under the direction of a teacher from Saxony, when she was only eight years old and living in Germany. Moravian stars, also known as Herrnhut stars, originated in the early nineteenth century in Germany, possibly beginning as a geometry project for students at the Moravian Boys School. Over the years, they have become a favorite symbol of Advent and Christmas all over Europe and throughout the world. Gabrielle says they give her great joy to create and she loves seeing them used in happy celebrations like weddings and birthdays.

Come see Gabrielle's stars and many other unique products, including books by Angie Burns, crosses crafted by Bob Theobald, and prayer beads made by our priests, in the Christ Gift Shop, open Sundays, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm. For more information, please contact Ellen Kuehm at [email protected]
