NMPF supports proposal to revoke soy protein heart health claim
The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) said it supports the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's proposal to revoke an authorized health claim that links soy protein with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. The organization also repeated its insistence that FDA take action against plant-based food companies that use dairy terminology inappropriately to market imitation dairy products, such as soy "milk."
Last fall, FDA announced its proposal to revoke the health claim because numerous studies since the original authorization of the claim in 1999 have presented "inconsistent findings" regarding the relationship between soy protein and a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.
In comments submitted Monday, NMPF commended the agency for undergoing the rigorous review of recent science to take a closer look at the health benefits of soy protein.

U.K. steps up fight against TB
In the U.S., bovine tuberculosis (TB) has been mostly eliminated from the livestock population, but eradication remains elusive as sporadic cases appear, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service.
In the U.K., however, bovine TB remains a widespread, persistent problem.
The Scotland Rural College (SRUC) announced March 22 that it is working with the U.K.'s Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) to embark on two new projects that will move the agriculture industry one step closer to eradicating bovine TB.

Hydrofresh opening $10m pasteurization plant in Ohio
Hydrofresh HPP, an affiliate of Keller Logistics Group, recently announced that it will soon be opening a $10 million pasteurization plant in Ohio that will use an innovative high-pressure processing (HPP) technology.
While the traditional pasteurization method uses heat prior to packaging to eliminate micro-bacteria that are present in food, Hydrofresh will be using HPP, which is a cold pasteurization technique.
With HPP, products already sealed in their final packaging are introduced into a vessel and subjected to a high level of isostatic pressure -- up to 87,000 psi -- transmitted by water. This process produces a 5-log reduction in salmonella, Escherichia coli and listeria (bacteria that cause foodborne illness) while preserving the color, texture, nutrients and flavor of the product. Because the food is treated in its final packaging, the chance for re-contamination is virtually nonexistent. Shelf life is also extended because the bacteria that cause spoilage have been destroyed, all without the need for adding preservatives.

Agropur expanding cheese plant in South Dakota
Agropur recently announced that it has broken ground on a substantial expansion of its cheese manufacturing facility in Lake Norden, S.D. The project, upon completion, should increase the plant's daily milk processing capacity from 3 million lb. to more than 9 million lb., equal to the output of an additional 85,000 cows.
"Enlarging the Lake Norden plant has been identified as a strategic investment to help further serve our customers," the company said. "The plant will produce cheese and whey products that are marketed globally."

ADSA joins in support of ag research
While it took until late last week to pass the FY18 federal budget, but work has also been underway on the FY19 budget. ADSA has recently joined many other science based organization in several coalition letters to support funding for agricultural research priorities. They include support for Section 1433 Continuing Animal Health and Disease, Food Security, and Stewardship Research, Education and Extension Programs, providing $1.35 billion in discretionary funding for ARS in fiscal year (FY) 2019 along with rejection of the administration's proposed funding cuts that would result in the elimination of 20 ARS facilities across the country, and supporting: increased funding for AFRI. Copies of all the letters, as well as past ones, are available in the "Public Policy" section of the ADSA website.
