CHC Conducts Strategic Plan Mid-Term Review
|
|
Last month saw CHC’s Annual Public Meeting, which had a good attendance and this year also included a short presentation from Harbour Advisory Committee Chairman John Corby. CHC will be following up and responding to stakeholder questions that were posed during the Meeting.
Our lead article in June focuses on CHC’s mid-term review of our 5 year Strategic Plan, and I would like to highlight that we are keen to hear from any harbour users with ideas or projects for consideration.
Currently, the forecast for Saturday’s Round the Island Race shows an east-southeasterly 10-14 knot breeze at the start, veering right southwesterly 6-10 knots during the afternoon, with sunny skies and temperatures of 24-26°C. I hope that all competitors have a safe and great Race, and do please take note of the safety information in our RIR story below.

Mid-term review of Strategic Plan 2016-2021
|
Cowes Harbour Commission is carrying out a mid-term review of CHC’s current 5 year Strategic Plan and we would like to hear from you.
The Board of Commissioners' focus for the review is to give consideration to increasing investment into harbour services and facilities for sustainable employment and the long-term prosperity of the harbour for stakeholders.
From opportunities for commercial shipping and marine employment through to the changing leisure market and customer demands within the leisure sector, eventing and sponsorship; let us know what you think should be considered in this review.
No idea is too big, small or crazy at this stage as we do not want to constrain the review process so welcome all ideas from small projects to blue sky thinking.
Ideas already included range from the provision of water and electricity on river pontoons through to floating holiday pods and creating a “small beach” inside the Cowes Breakwater.

Round the Island Race - #raceforall
|
Sailors from around the world will be competing in the famous ‘Round the Island Race’ that will see over 1,200 boats sail around the Isle of Wight on Saturday, 29th June.
The
Onboard Race Pack
for the 2019 Round the Island Race contains all the documentation competitors need on Race Day, including the Sailing Instructions, Layman's Guide to the Racing Rules and Declaration and Tracking instructions.

, issued jointly by the Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth, the ABP Southampton Harbour Master and the Cowes Harbour Master, contains essential information on traffic restrictions in the Central Solent.

Cowes Harbour Inner Fairway Precautionary Areas
|
Cowes Harbour Commission would like to highlight to all harbour users that two Precautionary Areas have been established in the Inner Fairway at Cowes Harbour to improve the safety of navigation.
As detailed in
Cowes Local Notice to Mariners No. 16 of 2019
, all vessels must navigate with particular caution in the “Red Jet Turning & Eastern Channel Traffic Convergence Area” and the “Red Funnel Vehicle & Freight Ferry Berthing Area”.

Cowes Harbour joins Cruise Britain
|
Cowes Harbour Commission is delighted to have joined Cruise Britain, the business-to-business network for UK cruise ports, destinations and service providers.
Next month, Cowes will host a record four cruise ship visits, including three maiden calls:

Marine Conservation Zones: Yarmouth to Cowes
|
Defra has designated a third tranche of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in English waters. Following last year’s consultation, 41 sites and 12 additional features have been designated. These are viewable individually with factsheets
on the gov.uk website
and include the
Yarmouth to Cowes MCZ
. The
boundaries of the Yarmouth to Cowes MCZ
do not cover any part of the area of jurisdiction of Cowes Harbour.
Regulators, such as the Marine Management Organisation and local Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA), will be responsible for ensuring the Marine Conservation Zones are managed to protect their species and habitats, working with local fishing communities and other organisations.

Panerai British Classic Week
|
Panerai British Classic Week is taking place from 13th to 20th July in Cowes.
For 2019, the event will have two elements to the prizes. All yachts will race towards the primary IRC overall and class winner prizes, which will be awarded solely on race results. Building on last year’s emphasis on authenticity, race results will also go towards a second set of prizes to be won by yachts deemed as authentic by a panel of independent judges.

The 12th edition of Cowes Classics Week, organised by the Royal London Yacht Club, runs from 27th July to 2nd August, with racing from Monday, 29th July onwards.

SailGP call for volunteers
|
Do you want to be at the heart of the action at SailGP Cowes?
Organisers are looking for local volunteers to assist around Cowes over the SailGP event on 10th and 11th August. The SailGP race village will also be open for the King’s Cup on 9th August, meaning volunteers are required over a three day period.
