An exploration of language and how our choice of words has a vast effect on how we are perceived and understood (or not).  She shares glimpses of the wisdom imparted to her by her grandfather sprinkled with humor and insights into today's mangling of language in our culture.

Karen Abbotts is a native of Chapel Hill and a Member of this church.  She had a close relationship with her grandfather, the Reverend Charles M. Jones, first minister of this church, until he died when she was in her late thirties.  She raised her three children here and now lives in Hillsborough with her husband, Bill.

 
MUSIC NOTES  Glenn Mehrbach and Danny Gotham will play the Gathering Music for this Sunday's Service. During the Service, Danny and Kate Shipman will offer new interpretations of two classic Christian hymns.

  • WHAT'S THIS WEEK'S SPECIAL AT THE POP-UP MART?  Flowers of the hour, handcrafts, tempting produce, fresh eggs - you never know what there'll be. Have you some bounty to offer on the "Close-The-Gap" table during Coffee Hour this Sunday? Bring it on! Every dollar helps close the gap between estimated costs and projected capital funds for the church's building project!  
  • Memorial Service A memorial service celebrating the life of Ruth Boyce will be held Saturday, June 29 at the auditorium at Carolina Meadows at 3:30. Rev. Thom Belote will officiate. All in our church community are invited to attend.
  • TRY IT OUT COVENANT GROUPS Curious about Covenant Groups? Come try one out on Sunday, June 30 from 3:00 to 4:30 in the Sanctuary. These small groups promote deep listening and connection by sharing around themed readings and focus questions. Try a summer drop-in group to see if you might like to join one of the year-long monthly ones, which re-form in the fall. Other Try it Out opportunities: July 28, August 25, September 22.   • COMMUNITY CLICKERS Join the Community Clickers in the Commons Area for our monthly daytime meeting on Wednesday, July 3rd from 2-4 pm. We are taking a break from designing shawls for UNC Hospice House. Instead, we will sit, click, chat, and work on individual projects for the Fall Auction and Holiday Bazaar. Can't knit or crochet?   • COME HELP FEED THE HUNGRY 7/5 & 7/16 WITH IFC Want to serve the food insecure in our community? It's simple! Sign up HERE. Sign up once or sign up every month to serve with The Inter-Faith Council for Social Services (IFC), of which The Community Church is a founding church.   • HABITAT HOMES DEDICATION All Community Church members are invited and encouraged to join the celebration of a wonderful church-sponsored Habitat for Humanity project: the dedication of the eight Crescent Magnolia townhouses our church has been working on this year. The dedication will be Sat., July 13 at 10 a.m. at 131 Skip Rock Rd., Hillsborough. Seven new senior citizen townhouse owners will be there and our QUUilters group has made quilts to present to each of them. For more information on Crescent Magnolia, CLICK HERE.
  • WOMENCIRCLE CLOTHING EXCHANGE Bring some things, take some things! A fun, free and easy way to shop! Join us in the Jones Building on Saturday, July 13 from 9:00 - 12:00. In order to be ready for the shopping spree, bring your gently used clothes, scarves, jewelry, shoes, etc. to the church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. p.m. on Friday, July 12.   • NONFICTION BOOK DISCUSSION FOR JULY On Saturday, July 20, at 10:30 in the Kirby Room, the Nonfiction Readers will discuss The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, by Jon Meacham. Lila Berry will be leading our discussion. The Readers meet on the third Saturday of each month; new members and drop-ins are welcome. Click here to contact the group.
  • Share the Plate - Club Nova On behalf of Club Nova I would like to thank the Church for "sharing the plate" Sunday, 6/16, resulting in a gift of $652.00.We appreciate your support for mental health services in our community. These funds will be used towards our Capital Campaign to build a new clubhouse to serve persons with persistent and severe mental health difficulties with a larger and more functional facility.   • FIRST WEEK OF FIXING UP THE JONES BUILDING In Week 1, the Buildings and Grounds team decommissioned the downstairs spaces vacated last week by the preschool, stripping the walls of unwanted shelves and cubbies and such. An influx of volunteer signups for work shifts in Week 2 and beyond has set us up for a gangbuster start on the cleaning, patching and painting to follow! 
  • GRATITUDE FOR MOVEMENT TO END RACISM AND ISLAMOPHOBIA SHARE THE PLATE Movement To End Racism and Islamophobia (MERI), the Peace and Justice Committee and Side with Love Ministry would like to thank the congregation for the very generous collection of $1,443.48 during the Share The Plate on June 9. These funds will go a long way to assist MERI's part-time staff and volunteers to continue their important work of coordinating workshops, teach-ins, and media campaigns to combat systemic racism as well as rising cases of prejudice and hatred.
  • SIGN-UP IDEA OF THE WEEK - MIX-AND-MATCH! Next time you gaze at the Fix-Up shift calendar (on display Sundays or online anytime), look for a future shift that has just one or two signups and add your name! You may find yourself working with a friend you don't yet know. And, together with the Building & Grounds supervisor, you'll help move the project ahead in those two hours.   • ART SHOW IN THE SANCTUARY May 5-June 30 Rock, Water, Tree by Joan Meade.
  • Help make Sunday mornings happen - Become a Greeter! Our church is busier than ever, and we need folks to help welcome people in to our church on Sunday morning and we have many Greeter spaces open over the next few weeks! Please take a moment to sign up to be a Greeter, and help new people see what our community is really like.  Please join us when you can for this simple, but important work.  Thanks so much - your help is appreciated!
  • WELCOMING CHILDREN IN THE SANCTUARY Children are a wonderful gift to this community. Children are always welcome to worship in the Sanctuary. To support little ones during the service, we will now offer Busy Bags (pouches with fun activities) and Busy Boards (coloring and writing activities) as well as soft toys for our youngest worshipers. Stop by the new Children's Welcome Table in the Sanctuary (across from the Art Table near the Sound Room).
  • LECTIO (SACRED READING) MEDITATION GROUP meets at noon every Friday in the Commons.  We use readings from poetry and the wisdom traditions of the world's religions as prompts for reflection and sharing.  No need to sign up ahead of time.  Please join us.
