A Look Forward to What's in Store for 2018 - Meet our IACP Board Members
Part One

IACP Executive Vice President Cynthia Blankenship, Esq.
A Message from Your Executive Vice President Cynthia Blankenship, Esq.

As IACP Highlights the IACP Board Members, we are excited to share some fun information about this amazing group of leaders.  We are so fortunate to have so many talented and passionate individuals leading this Academy.  We hope you feel you know your Board members a little better after reading this series of emails.  You may even have some similar connections and interests. I have really enjoyed reading the responses from our Board Members.

IACP is so pleased and thankful for our IACP Board Members.

We want to make sure you know who you elected to the IACP Board of Directors, not only as a leader, but as an individual.  IACP is a member-driven Academy, and putting faces with names is important, but getting to know your leaders is just as important.

It may seem like we are making light of the positions our Board Members have, but that couldn't be farther from the truth!  As individuals, we each have thoughts, opinions and different life experiences that shape us.  As a group, we all need to come together for a common goal, and in my experience from working on the Hill - sometimes it helps to find common ground outside of the office.  This can build a bond and remind us that we are all human, we all have a common goal - preserving patient access, and we can learn from each other while working together.

As we highlight the IACP Board Members, we hope you see them in a new light and have as much fun as we did learning about them and what brought the to the compounding industry!

What was your first job?
Delivering Chinese Food.  Next to pharmacy compounding, the best job I've ever had.  Unfortunately, after a few years of working there, my 19 year-old body developed a cholesterol level that rivaled that of a much older person.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
First, my father-in-law, Robert "Bob" Davis was a huge influence on my professional development, as he showed first-hand all the wonderful opportunities that pharmacy has to offer.  So, I credit him for getting me involved in pharmacy.  Also, I worked for a compounding pharmacist while in pharmacy school, John Rains.  I looked up to his entrepreneurial spirit, and his passion for patient care.  He did some really innovative things back in the 90s.  Compounding is truly the ONLY true pharmacy profession that represents ALL that pharmacy has to offer.  Compounding pharmacists offer their clinical expertise, employ their pharmaceutical science knowledge, and patient care skills...all in one day!

What are your hobbies?
Absolutely love teaching my 7 year-old daughter how to swim and play golf! My wife, Joelle, and I, couldn't be more proud of her.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I also enjoy running on the trails at Kennesaw Mountain, a national park that's near our house.  Some of the best ideas for our pharmacy were during some of those trail runs.

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
As much as I love the Dallas Cowboys, I have an equal disdain for Jerry Jones.  As such, I started a campaign through Facebook, called "Jerry Jones, Go Fire Yourself."  Go take a look!  11,000+ likes and growing!

Where is your favorite place to be?
As my Mom is from England, I truly enjoy spending time in the English Countryside with close Family and Friends, and collectively chit chatting about our disdain for Jerry Jones.

How do you drink your coffee?
Via 12-hour IV drip preferably.  Otherwise, a little bit of sugar, little bit of cream.

What do you love most about serving patients?
Of all the benefits that pharmacy has to offer, patient reported health outcomes is my favorite.  Each time a patient reports that they are clinically benefiting from a preparation that my team has compounded, it gives us the extra level of pride that our craft is providing a benefit to those we serve.

What was your first job?
I started a lawn service at age 11 and it grew from helping a couple of neighbors to a very nice business by high school.  My friend and I built up to average of 11 lawns per day - M-F.  In addition, at age 16, I also worked at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, "home of the 72 oz. steak - eat it all and it's free".  That job convinced me, working for myself was better than working for "the man".

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
We opened the pharmacy in 1984 with the intention of building a business based on personalized care.  Those early years were lean, and I hated to turn down any prescription opportunity.  Progesterone suppositories and capsule Rxs kept popping up so I figured out how to make them.  Next, I was asked to do some dermatology compounding and it rapidly grew.  I found I really enjoyed that challenge (and the extra business).  Finally, when health issues arouse in my family - specifically hormonal deficiency, I had an idea to replace estrogen with a transdermal estradiol gel.   Dr. Loyd Allen (IJPC) was kind enough to do a potency and stability study on the product in his labs at the University of Oklahoma in 1987.  We evolved in our compounding skills and now enjoy a very diversified offering of personalized care services.

What are your hobbies?
I often joke I need to forget about retirement as I am not that good at golf and no matter how much I might play, I probably won't get much better.  In spite of my handicap, I do enjoy golf and the outing with friends.  A good party with friends, cooking, wing hunting and action novels are also fun respites.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Give me a cold beer and an outdoor kitchen and I will have a great day off!

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
In spite of my regular public speaking gigs (which I really enjoy), I am naturally an introvert.  Life experiences taught me I might as well deal with the shyness and "just get out there".

Where is your favorite place to be?
We have taken several vacations, renting a house in Carmel California.  With that beautiful Pacific view, my batteries can't help but recharge.

How do you drink your coffee?
Black coffee, preferably with a bold flavor.  But not too much, I am already hyper enough!

What do you love most about serving patients?
Just last week, I happened to get thank you notes from two of my consult patients, one lady was a pediatric therapist and the other a family with a 12 year-old child.  When they described the dramatic improvements in health and quality of life, I got a little choked up.  I would imagine most pharmacists are natural caretakers and those validating moments are powerful for us!
