A Uniquely American Story

BONE HILL is an epic story of one woman's return to her childhood homeland on Black Mountain and the coal mines of Harlan County, KY, where her family has dwelled for centuries. Traveling back in time to her childhood and her ancestors spanning four generations of women in a Cherokee family, BONE HILL explores their lives and stories. It is a story about the family's connection to the land - the simplicity and sacredness of that connection and the ruptures that threaten to extinguish it. Based on the stories of Martha's family, with all original compositions by Redbone and Whitby.

Martha Redbone is one of the most vital voices in American Roots music.... lauded by John Pareles of the New York Times for  "holding both the taut determination of mountain music and the bite of American Indian singing." A multi award-winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and country sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. With her gospel singing father's voice and the spirit of her Cherokee/Choctaw mother's culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of Americana Music and Culture.
"Bone Hill isn't tripped up BY uncomfortable truths and unresolved conflicts: It grooves through them, bolstered by some of New York's finest musicians and Redbone's own stirring voice and commanding presence." (Larry Blumenfeld, Wall St Journal)

"Audience was completely enthused about Bone Hill, and moved by the subject matter - received a long standing ovation." (Univ. of Hawaii - Hilo Performing Arts Center)

"A great residency with Bone Hill. As usual, Martha was amazing with the kids, able to adapt to so many different ages, ability levels, and group sizes. A joy to be around and work with. We can't wait to see Bone Hill develop over time!" (Univ. of Washington - Meany Hall)

"Nothing but compliments on our Bone Hill residency. We came out a winner in the quality of performance and the good feeling our audience walked away with." (Eisemann Center)
