STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT UPDATE:
CAN I TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY?
DO I HAVE A STABLE HOME?
Advancement, resiliency, and stability were the initial topics for the Strong Individuals and Families Impact Council as they met to begin the Results Based Accountability (RBA) journey of establishing a set of aligned results, strong measurable indicators, impactful strategies, and program performance measures to create a condition of well-being for children, adults, and families.

The Impact Council, made up of experts in the field of family issues, community members, advocates, and key stakeholders, began their results conversation by addressing how the council could begin with strengthening the individual and then focus on the entire family. “Can we start with the individual first and then impact the family, which in turn will impact the system?” was a common theme for the group.
READY CHILDREN IMPACT COUNCIL CELEBRATES
Ready Children Impact Council members recently completed a series of meetings using research, a data-driven process and volunteers’ best thinking about what works and including the contributions of many partners. No single action by any one agency can create the needed improved results. This diverse group of volunteers is utilizing Results Based Accountability while developing strategies to solve complex community issues challenging our children. The Impact Council will continue moving forward with selecting results, indicators, and strategies for recommending how United Way will invest donations to make the greatest community impact. Thank you to all of the volunteers stakeholders who are committed to helping our community grow Happy, Healthy, Ready children.

As part of its Family-Centered Community Change portfolio, the Annie E. Casey Foundation is partnering with community development initiatives in three cities — Buffalo, New York; Columbus, Ohio; and San Antonio, Texas — to integrate disconnected services for kids and adults. With an end goal of strengthening families, this approach focuses on enhancing both the quality of schools for children, as well as job and parenting skills for adults. In a new blog post series, the Casey Foundation explores what Family-Centered Community Change looks like to the organizations involved. Read how United Way’s Henrietta Muñoz , Ph.D. uses Family-Centered Practice to help the organization move the needle in San Antonio .

During spring break this year, over 1,000 people attended the community Spring Festival series. Families enjoyed educational activities in the sunshine and learned about Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Early Support (HOPES) III Grant from Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), Prevention & Early Intervention Division (PEI) partners and community educational programs at Pearsall Park, Lockwood Park, and Woodlawn Park. The Festival was funded by United Way and the San Antonio Area Foundation.
CARDBOARD KIDS - A CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION CAMPAIGN
In 2017, there were 5,588 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in Bexar County. And while that number is staggering, it’s just as shocking to learn that only 1 in 10 sexually abused children -- typically by someone the child knows, loves, and trusts -- ever make an outcry. Five years ago ChildSafe, a United Way nonprofit partner, created the Cardboard Kids Campaign , comprised of 2-foot tall cardboard figures shaped like children. Community members, businesses, and families decorated and displayed their own Cardboard Kids on April 5, “Reveal Day,” to create awareness for our mission of ending child abuse in Bexar County.

COMMUNITY PARTNER HIGHLIGHT:
UNEXPLAINED SKULL FRACTURES LEAD NANCY TO ANNA
Nancy, an Advocate for Child Advocates of San Antonio, met “Anna” when she was just three months old. She had been removed from her home and placed with her paternal grandfather because she had sustained two unexplained skull fractures.

When her grandfather was no longer able to care for her, Anna was placed with the “Dunlap” family. While the Dunlap family cared for Anna, her parents were engaging in efforts to be reunited with their daughter. Anna’s father, however, had multiple positive drug tests and eventually stopped cooperating with the department so his rights were terminated.
