Tizzard Island Climate Resilience Grant
MCBP Receives Community Resilience Grant!

MCBP has been selected to receive a Community Resilience Grant from the Department of Natural Resources to design a project to enhance the climate resilience of Tizzard Island in southern Chincoteague Bay. Under this grant, MCBP and partners will first develop a holistic Island Resiliency Plan to identify climate-resilient restoration strategies to be implemented across the island

Following plan completion, MCBP will design a nature-based shoreline and wetland restoration project based on plan priorities. Practices will be designed to address erosion, storm impacts, and sea level rise. This project will serve as a demonstration project for protecting the broader network of near-shore bay islands that provide wildlife habitat while buffering mainland coastal communities from coastal storm impacts.
Assateague Living Shoreline
Construction Underway!

This June, we broke ground on a living shoreline project next to the Assateague State Park Boat Ramp! The Maryland Coastal Bays Program and project partners including Maryland DNR, Assateague State Park, and Underwood & Associates, are constructing 10 headland structures to dissipate wave energy and reduce erosion. These headlands will be planted with native marsh grasses, increasing the area of marsh habitat onsite. There will also be beach areas created in between the structures, which will provide excellent areas for horseshoe crabs and terrapins to lay their eggs. In addition to the habitat benefits, this project will help to improve water clarity and quality in Sinepuxent Bay.
