July / August 2018

Next stop: Kansas City!

In a little over one month the NMRA 2018 Convention Committee will be welcoming you to Kansas City for a week of model railroading fun.

We've been busy putting the finishing touches on the convention clinic schedule, which is posted on the convention website at kc2018.org.  There are still some great tours that have room left on them for you to purchase a seat.  Don't delay because once they fill up, there will be no more second sections added.  We want you to experience the great model railroad community here in Kansas City, and the best way to do that is to sign up for tours!

The 2018 convention cars have arrived and they are great looking models that you need to check out.  We have two separate three-packs of Kansas City area railroad themed Accurail 4750 kits.  Head on over to the company store on the convention website to purchase your convention cars and check out many of the other items that we have available for purchase including T-shirts, hats and mugs.  We can ship items as well.

It's hard to believe that almost 3 years of hard work is coming to fruition.  We're looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones during the 2018 Convention.  If you haven't already registered for the convention, you need to get off your caboose and get to Kansas City!!!

Visit  http://www.kc2018.org/ for all the details!

A few last words from the President

The Future of Model Railroading.

Although I have addressed this topic before, a speech by noted author and video star Trevor Marshall at a recent LSR Convention banquet was a powerful predictor of what the future may hold. And with thanks to Trevor for his insights, the future is not grim. He believes the hobby will be smaller, a trend we are already experiencing and that change is inevitable, but that Millennials possess many traits compatible with a robust future for our hobby.

One is an interest in building as shown by Bot Festivals and Maker Faires. He suggests, as have I, more NMRA involvement in such events. Another is the interest of younger generations in communally solving problems and in doing so in creative ways. As he points out, in many ways, Millennials resemble model railroaders in doing so. Is not the NMRA a communal organization assisting in "problem solving" through articles in the magazine or clinics and MWTM programs? Do we not use bent paper clips or other non-traditional methods to control devices? Well, the younger generations like to do so even more than we do.

Trevor cited the healthy Railroad Prototype Modeler's meets as examples of our future, often featuring a younger demographic. More emphasis on individual models in a world of smaller and more centrally located living units without room for traditional model railroads. He foresees increased interest in modules and small operation-oriented dioramas rather than a traditional basement-sized layout.

Finally, Trevor suggests listening to the younger generations and rather than telling them how to become model railroaders, ask them how they would solve a particular problem. He suggests a better result from that approach. Great food for thought and while Trevor hastens to add he is no prognosticator, I think he may have gotten it more right than not. Indeed, his comment that new generations would define the hobby in ways we cannot control or even foresee is absolutely true. It is up to new generations to enjoy the hobby as they see fit and that may not be the same way we do. His conclusion? Let the future take care of the future and do not sweat it. Enjoy what you do and trust the future to those who will do the same in their own way.

I thank Trevor for his insights and hope he will not mind me purloining them for this column. They are a good positive way to end my last column as President in the NMRA eBulletin.

It has been an honor to serve and I appreciate all of your comments, compliments and criticisms. The NMRA is in great shape and Pete Magoun and the new slate of Directors and Officers will do a great job, with your support. I also hope to see many of you in Kansas City as we transition.

So as I have said from column #1, whether you agree or disagree with me, we welcome your thoughts, insights and comments. And as I also always have said.....those are my thoughts.....what are yours?

There's a lot happening in the world of scouting!
NMRA National Scout Coordinator

By now, you've probably heard that the Boy Scouts are going change their name and they are also going to start accepting young women into their program. Both of these statements are true, sort of.

First of all, the national corporation is called the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). That name will not be changing. The BSA offers five separate programs. Three of them, Venturing, Sea Scouting, and Exploring, are co-ed programs and have been for many years. In fact Exploring (or Explorers) started accepting young women in 1969. Exploring accepts young men and women 10-20 years old and the other two accept young men and women 14-20 years old. The other two programs are Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting. This is where the big changes will occur.

Cub Scouting is now open to young men and women who are in grades K-5. They just started allowing women to join this program. However, this is not a fully integrated program. Cub Scouting has Packs usually sponsored through a local church. The Pack is split up into Dens. The young men will have their Dens and the young women will have their Dens. This will allow the young women the opportunity to attain leadership roles within the Pack.

Boy Scouting is now open to young men ages 11-18. This will change most likely in February 2019 when they start allowing young women to join. This program will also change its name to Scouts BSA at that time. Boy Scouting now and Scouts BSA later has Troops and Patrols. It is assumed that they will have separate Patrols for the young women.

With all the changes going on, the BSA has developed a new Youth Protection Training program called YPT2. Regardless of when you last completed YPT, all BSA Registered Adults need to take this new program no later than October 1, 2018. The training is accessed at www.my.training.org. The training does take an hour and a half to two hours to complete so it is best if you reserve a large enough block of time to complete the program.

Thanks for all you do for the NMRA and the BSA.
