Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parents and Guardians,

One of the primary goals of a Catholic education, one that separates St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School from the many fine public and private schools available to our families, is to invite our young people to a relationship with Jesus or deepening an existing relationship with Jesus, and assisting them to see the role of faith in their daily life.

Most of the time, and rightly so, we focus on the quantitative aspects of education - skills and achievement, grades and standardized test scores.  This is very important because we must prepare our students for success in higher education. However, the centerpiece of our school mission is to prepare our students to be more than academically excellent.  We strive to provide an education grounded in Gospel values that forms our students to be ethical and responsible, to have a life orientation toward faith and moral decision making, to be the hands and feet of Christ with all whom they meet.

Recently, our 8th grade students traveled to Divine Word Retreat Center in Riverside for an overnight retreat themed, "Come as You Are."  I look forward to the retreat because I step away from my daily tasks to spend quality time with our 8 th grade students.  The retreat is part of the ongoing formation process focused on spiritual and personal development.  In education speak, it is a summative assessment of the work we have done forming student's spiritually and personally throughout their time at St. Francis School.  In terms of faith formation and peer relationships, the retreat is the culmination and celebration of the St. Francis School experience for students, many of whom have been together since pre-kindergarten. The retreat focuses on the student's spiritual and personal journey as they prepare to leave St. Francis School for high school.

The retreat is one measure of our effort at school and home to impart our Catholic identity as members of a faith-based community.  Based on what I observed, our work bears much fruit. I witnessed a deep respect and faith in God as well as strong bonds of friendship.  The spiritual and personal journey at St. Francis School has a significant and positive impact on the lives of our 8 th grade students. They are prepared with a strong academic, personal, and spiritual foundation to be successful in high school and beyond.  Your children are very fortunate to have teachers and administrators who are deeply committed to help students reach their full potential.  I really enjoyed an excellent retreat experience facilitated by Mrs. Sledge, Mrs. Cooper, and Mrs. Lambert. We were also blessed to have Fr. Hoa from St. Martins and Fr. Tim from St. Bonaventure.  Four young adults involved in parish youth ministry, including Mr. McKay, rounded out an excellent retreat team that provided a faith-filled experience for our 8th grade students.

As evidenced by the retreat, the laity are instrumental in the ministry of Catholic education so it is imperative that we have time to nurture our personal and collective Catholic identity.  On Friday, March 16, the faculty and administration attended the Religious Education Congress at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Religious Education Congress is the largest event of its kind in the world, attracting over 40,000 catechists, religious educators, and teachers from every state and dozens of countries.  The Congress offers workshops covering a vast range of topics providing an excellent opportunity for dialogue, education, and fellowship. For many, the four day event is like a retreat, filled with activities to help renew, nourish, and energize our efforts to continue our faith journey and root others in our schools and parishes to, what our Holy Father has called, a "Culture of Encounter" with the Lord Jesus.

This year, Congress offered speakers and workshops designed to engage, enrich, and challenge us to to meet the needs of our educational ministry and personal faith journey. The Religious Education Congress offers a rewarding and enriching experience for the faculty through a variety of workshops, liturgies, entertainment and resources. The experience provides a great opportunity to grow in knowledge and understanding of the role we serve in our ministry as Catholic school educators.

Thank you for the sacrifices you made that allowed the faculty and administration to participate in this wonderful event.
