HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

Tioga County Partnership for Community Health
Fit for Life Program: Meet the Staff
Each year the Tioga County Partnership hires on a recreation staff for the purposes of implementing the Fit For Life program now in multiple sites in the county. The Elkland/Osceola site and Knoxville site are enjoying their fourth year, while the Westfield site is in its third year.
This program requires a special kind of energy as staffers are expected to organize and prep for each day's activities and act as mentors for the attending kids. The number and ages of children at the program can change from day to day, so staff need to be organized but flexible, and creative in their approach, all while keeping a marathon pace in order to teach the importance of physical fitness and nutrition to kids in this underserved part of our county. Those who bear the title "Fit For Life Recreation Staff" are a special breed and we are in awe of their talents!

A Special Thank You:
It is impossible to talk about Fit for Life Program without mentioning the Valley Youth Initiative group whose coordination efforts help make this program happen. Also, the success of Fit for Life is largely due in part to the Northern Tioga School District's Summer Feeding Program that runs alongside FFL and provides free lunch and snacks to children, ages 0-18.
Northern Tier Camp Cadet 2018
Above, left: Male Honor Cadet- Sean McKean, received the honor award given in memory of Trooper Joseph Welch. Above, right: Female Honor Cadet- Natasha Niles, received the honor award given
in memory of SSGT Ryan Ostrom.
This past week, 73 cadets graduated from 2018 Northern Tier Camp Cadet in Mansfield University's Steadman Theater. On the MU campus, each cadet completed a week full of drills, grueling room inspections, physical challenges, tactical workshops, and mock trials. The final evening's graduation ceremony then includes a detailed slide show of the week's activities, complete with bloopers, that are set to upbeat music, and displayed on the big screens on both ends of the stage. You can tell this week has been full of fun, triumphs, and challenges! As each cadet crosses the stage to receive their certificates, the Camp Cadet Director, officers, and staff congratulate and offer salutes and hearty handshakes to each for a job well done. Some cadets are presented with their certificates by a loved one who serves (or served) in the military and/or law enforcement. One stand out moment at this year's graduation saw Female Honor Cadet, Natasha Niles , taken by surprise when her older sister, who, unbeknownst to Natasha, was home from military service. Her older sister presented her with the certificate and was greeted with a huge bear hug. There was not a dry eye in the house! Moments like this one are enjoyed every year at Camp Cadet and we are proud to help make them happen.
