Kupuna Video Project Update

Pictured: William Tavares, Violet Komoda, Yaemi Yogi, and Mike Molina

The Kupuna Video Project began in May 2015, from the vision and inspiration of then board members Sunny Jordan and Judy Mertens. The vision was to recount the unique history of upcountry Maui as told by elders who lived, worked, raised families, and experienced the profound change that has overtaken life as it was a generation earlier. Robert Stone, an award-winning film maker was very interested in the project, joined Jordan and Mertens, and agreed to film and edit the kupuna interviews.

To date, the Museum has received the following grants for the Project:

County of Maui, Office of Economic Development: $6,000
Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation Grant for $10,000
Atherton Family Foundation for $10,000
Alexander & Baldwin Foundation for $10,000

The Museum and the entire upcountry community are very appreciative for their commitment to support this film project.

Sadly, Robert Stone passed away earlier this month. The Makawao History Museum honors his memory as a true friend of the Museum. Todd Perkins will be assisting the Museum so we may continue our collection of experiences and stories of the upcountry kupuna.

Anticipation of Meals to Come
 By: Amy N

The cookbook just arrived today! I am beyond thrilled. I had actually found the cookbook while researching interesting ideas for meals for the family Christmas gathering we do every year on the farm. Since my husband loves Brazilian (where I learned how yummy coconut milk was in rice) and Panamanian food (he was stationed there for 2-3 years) as well as every other culture he has tried (with a few exceptions). I think this is going to become one of our go to cookbooks.

The banana fritters (pg9) are a great alternative to apple fritters (which I already make). I am going to make the Eggs Benedict Casserole when I am off. It looks yummy! Many of the pupu I will be making very soon.

Several of these are different takes on dishes I already make and I am excited to try the different takes. Oh and the fact that many recipes include the components of spice blends (that may not be available in our area) and how to make them is wonderful. Many do not think to include these types of ideas.

It's also brilliant how there are stories included in each of the pictures that separate the cookbook.

Oh and on the Buttermilk pie, you can add some Bourbon to the mix to make it a KY Buttermilk pie. I use between 2Tbs and 1/4 c depending on how strong a taste is desired. I have a few friends who love the taste of Bourbon. But 2 Tbs is enough to get a good light flavor. I have also used whiskey and Drambuie (omit the vanilla for that one) and they work too.

Now that I have seen the cookbook, I have a feeling I will be placing another order for gifts.

The Makawao History Museum is looking for stories for our "Aloha in Makawao" columns! Please feel free to email us your stories at info@makawaomuseum.org
