Attention, students! Energy's National Honor Society has partnered with the Travis Manion Foundation - once again - and is looking for volunteers for its Spring Service Project. These projects will allow the school to establish a close relationship with the Third Ward community surrounding the new campus while teaching students about leadership and service. There will be two major events held on April 21st and 22nd. April 21st is Energy's Day of Service, during which volunteers will weed, plant, and harvest on the 3rd ward community garden, continue their service projects from April 7th, and have a STEM Showcase. Lastly, on April 22nd, Ms. Mein will take sixty volunteers from Energy and participate in Earth Day Houston, a zero-waste event.

Please be mindful that you will have to provide your own transportation to downtown.
If you're interested in any of these projects, sign up here: http://bit.ly/signupoplegacy. Please contact Ms. DeLaRosa if you have any questions.

We hope to see you there!
On Wednesday, April 4th, Energy hosted Signing Day for the incoming Class of 2022. Energy's incoming freshman toured the new campus and had the opportunity to see classrooms and facilities. During their tour, they saw current students present their past projects, providing future students insight into Energy's innovative project-based curriculum. In the cafeteria, clubs set up booths to inform guests and answer questions about extracurricular activities. For example, the FRC and VEX Robotics teams showcased the robots they designed and built. Overall, the new students learned about what Energy has to offer, leaving the event with new insight and much excitement about high school. We look forward to seeing them join the Energy family!

Last Wednesday, students, teachers, and prospective families got a first look at Energy's nearly-finished campus during Magnet Signing Night. Throughout the buildings, high ceilings and wall-to-wall windows illuminate the sleek, industrial architectural finishes and polished concrete floors. Beyond the aesthetic appeal of the new school, two major highlights are the new wet and dry labs. Equipped with functional furniture and state-of-the-art lab equipment, these labs will provide an ideal space for students to learn in their engineering and science classes. A large staircase descends from the second-story of the main building into the courtyard, which connects the campus' three buildings. The courtyard has an Outdoor Learning Center, as well as plenty of space for students to sit for lunch or work during passing periods. The capacious MakerSpace will eventually house professional-quality engineering equipment, including 3D printers and laser cutters. It will serve as an area where all grade levels can construct project components utilizing the equipment. The designated TED Talk room will act as a space for students to attend guest speakers and give their own presentations. Additional features of the new campus include the circular Spark Space, which will serve as the new Student Media Lounge, and the athletic wing's gym space and locker rooms. In the near future, the campus will welcome three custom art installations funded by Noble Energy. The Energy community is excited to begin next year in the new building and cannot wait to see what amazing things will be created in this new space.

On Saturday, April 7th, Energy student leaders participated in the Character and Leadership training course aboard the Battleship Texas, a program developed by the Travis Manion Foundation. TMF's character and leadership training implores veterans and survivors to inspire young adults to live with character, develop their leadership skills, and activates them to serve their communities in honor of fallen heroes. The curriculum hopes to bring a more in-depth experiential learning format to students. This mentorship program is a one-day event. TMF veteran Ambassadors worked with small group of students to explore what it means to live a life of character and introduce an expanded array of character strengths. This program uses informal discussions and activity based learning to cultivate character traits in future generations. During this training, students learned what type of value and visions TMF's holds. In addition, students and veterans discussing what character means and how one can use their character to contribute to their community. Overall, the goal of this program is to impart the necessary tools and training to young adult to help them build and foster a better character.

On Saturday, April 7th, over 70 Energy students, parents, and faculty participated in a community Block Walk around the new campus. Each canvassing team, which consisted of four individuals, were assigned at least fifteen specific houses to visit. They talked to and invited residents to a community open house on April 21. Canvassers also asked the residents if they needed any yard work done with the Travis Manion Foundation. The upcoming day of service will take place at the new campus and around the surrounding neighborhoods, where volunteers will weed, plant, and rake the Third Ward community garden, continue their service projects from April 7th, and have a STEM Showcase. Overall, the Energy community did well on their first Block Walk. We are excited to move into the new campus and community next school year.

On Saturday, April 7th, Energy students presented at the 2nd annual HISD Together with Tech Competition and Expo. This event allowed students to present projects related to the Mind, Body or Soul of Houston within three categories: Engineer a Solution, Digital Voice and Code.It. With a focus on technology integration, the event also allows students to showcase their global graduate skills. Over 45 teams entered in the three events from all the high schools within HISD. Our junior team, comprised of Saarah Khan, Brock Lewis, Sucely Munoz and Ben Negron, from the Atomic 5 cohort presented their sustainable garden prototype for potato farming from their recent PBL: "How can we reimagine Texas' agriculture infrastructure to ensure a sustainable future?". Our freshman team, comprised of Ben Barnes, Oscar Davenport, Eowyn Dendtler and Noah Hight, from the AC/DC cohort presented their solution to their assigned energy source from their last PBL: "How can we make individuals make a difference in global sustainability?" While the competition was going on, we had 4 other outstanding groups representing Energy at the Together with Tech Expo. Reagan Dennis and Michael Sanchez along with Ashlyn Cannon and Jose De La Rosa from the Atomic 5 cohort presented different aspects of their projects by showcasing their online magazines and project overview. The other two presenters at the Expo table were Christian Kelly and Sammy Eldin. Both students were representing their respective teams and presented their senior Engineering Design prototypes. All of the students did a fantastic job explaining their projects to visitors at the event.

Ryan Chase from 104 KRBE hosted the awards presentation and Energy was thrilled to have the junior team earn first place and the freshman team earn second place in the Engineer a Solution category! Way to go Energy!

On Saturday, April 28th, Energy students will have the opportunity to participate in the Communication, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (C-STEM) Challenge hosted by the Houston Health Museum. The C-STEM Challenge is an event in which students from different schools compete to solve a series of problems designed by industry professionals. The event will be conducted in a project-based learning manner while aligning with national standards. This year, the competition theme is titled, "Living Smarter: Powering a Sustainable and Productive Future", and the activities will focus on current and future management of resources and preservation of the global environment. If you are interested in participating in this year's C-STEM Challenge, talk to Ms. Lockhart for more information.
This week's spotlight goes to Energy freshman, Benjamin Barnes! Before coming to Energy, Ben attended various partial homeschooling campuses throughout his elementary and middle school years, but he wanted something different for high school. Last spring, Ben toured Energy after discovering its focus on STEM, and he immediately applied. He hopes to one day become a mechanical or aerospace engineer with a background in computer programming. His parents have always pushed him in his academics and extracurricular activities, especially since they have backgrounds in education and STEM. His dad is an education consultant, and his mom attended Yale as an undergraduate and is a chief medical officer at Legacy Community Health. He challenged himself in taking math courses over the summer, which led him to be the only freshman in a pre-calculus course this year. He plans on taking BC Calculus and AP Statistics next year, and he plans to take mathematics courses at HCC in his junior and senior years. Outside of his core classes, he participates in many clubs including UIL Math, Together with Tech, Offshore Technology Conference, VEX Robotics, and JV InvenTeam. When he is not focused on academic activities, Ben rides his bike, solves Rubik's cubes, or swims in the freestyle relay for his team.

Words of Wisdom:
"Don't be afraid to ask for help, because a lot of people believe it shows weakness -- only it shows strength in admitting you don't know."
This week, Energy's senior EDD classes are developing and testing their prototypes. Each group must complete three test procedures, detailed with purpose, data, materials, pass/fail criteria, and safety considerations. For example, students Cristian Ageitos, Max Roberts, Mario Sanchez, and Oswaldo Escalante, created a prototype of a multi-tool that would be used during emergencies, such as natural disasters. They conducted tests to measure the amount of prolonged stress the prototype could handle when used against building materials. In the meantime, the seniors have been working hard on their projects, and we can't wait to see their functional prototypes on May 3rd at the Senior Engineering Design and Development Showcase at the new building!

Two years ago, a group of students traveled to Iceland on an international adventure in a country where over 90% of their electricity comes from renewable resources. The students toured the country and visited a bioresearch center, a geothermal plant, and many geological wonders and had an amazing time. We are in the process of collecting information to see how much of an interest there is in another adventure. If you are interested in participating in an international trip in the Spring or Summer of 2019, please complete the Travel Survey at http://www.tinyurl.com/EIHSTravelSurvey . See Mrs. MacGregor if you have any questions.
Families of all grade levels are invited to join us on April 11th for College Night. There are various sessions to choose from such as Scholarships and Financial Aid, Essay Writing, Application Basics, and more. Go to http://www.tinyurl.com/EIHSCollegeNight  to sign up.

On the following day, April 12th, all juniors will attend the NACAC College Fair at NRG Stadium. Students need to dress professionally and be prepared to speak to college representatives. Visit the NACAC College Fair Website for a list of schools that will be in attendance. We recommend that students start deciding which schools they would like to visit, researching those schools online, and preparing some questions for the representatives. The questions should be ones that could not be answered by visiting the school's website.

Finally, on April 24th the juniors will take the SAT. Good luck juniors!
